This is the nice river that flows from Lake Zurich northwest through Zurich. It's used for hydroelectric power and also for swimming.
Every August the city holds the Limmatschwimmen, where thousands of people jump into the river and float downstream holding onto rubber duckies (or butterflies, as was the case this year). Due to incredible popularity, tickets run out like crazy, so I haven't been able to attend yet. Let's keep my fingers crossed for next year!
Every December the city holds the Lichterschwimmen, where primary school children release 800 miniature candle boats to float down the river. Zurich Tourism also hands out free punch and Tirggel biscuits for onlookers to enjoy. read more
