Most, if not all, of Hulls museums are free to get into…read more This one is a gem. I was so busy enjoying it, when I was a student, I managed to get locked in at lunchtime. Displays include the only dinosaur bones to have been found in East Yorkshire, Bronze Age warriors and their huts, and spectacular treasures from the Middle Ages. You can stroll through an Iron Age village and visit a Roman bath house. For me the awesome thing is the boat. In a glass tank, constantly sprayed with wax and water is this enormous wooden boat, an Iron Age logboat the Hasholme boat was installed in the gallery within its conservation chamber in 1988. They then shut the museum for restoration and archeological exploration (under it) but when it reopened they had created new Celtic World displays (1991) and put in a Mezzanine floor. Late 1990s displays about the prehistoric period in East Yorkshire were created. The Roman galleries were refurbished in 2002 and, in 2003, Anglo-Saxon and medieval displays were installed. Parts of three timber buildings have been reconstructed in the galleries and a medieval kiln reconstructed as well as a leatherworks. There is a huge Tudor gun and lots of beautiful Roman mosaics. This museum has so much and is very educational. Great views of the river too. The only photo I have of the Hasholme boat is an archeological one in situ but gives an idea of size.

Also a big craft centre and several flea market building. All housed in RAF buildings and hangers. There is a small aviation museum and planes too. Lots of greasy spoon eateries. Best on a Sunday when it has a huge car boot and market. I have bought Victorian pen and inks for approx £3 and sold them for £90. Lot's of books and well anything..furniture, clothes, plants. It is HUGE! Ghosts: My father and I looked around an old hanger with ex RAF furniture and equipment for sale. All the time we were in there a phone was ringing. It was annoying and my father declared he wished someone would answer it. Later he read that the hanger was haunted by a phone constantly ringing and that there was no phone in the building! Others: Two ghosts have been reported at this former World War Two airbase. A pilot who crash landed runs down the runway with his clothes on fire, while an engineer who lost his arm in machinery staggers around screaming. A ghostly rendition of the Missouri Waltz is also reported.

People come from miles and miles to hunt for a bargain or two…read more You really do need to leave yourself a good couple of hours if you want to see everything, however after a while all the car boot stalls begin to merge into one. The market side has a good range of stalls from clothes and shoes, through to diy goods and confectionary. There are also flea market areas within the outbuildings which make a nice diversion whilst walking around.

This was his home…read more It is designed to show slavery and it's effects and there is an auction stand that has a taped voice and you can be auctioned as a slave (ok it is for kids education..I like it too) and a deck reconstruction with slaves packed in (also spaces for kids to slide in and see how it feels). It is quite a moving experience and hopefully provokes deep thoughts. Slavery IS still happening but no longer openly. These exhibits are not heavy just educational and then there are lighter displays. Toys and dolls, a reconstructed old chemists shop with all the apothacaries jars and pill making equipment, so many other things too. These are housed in the house and connecting Georgian houses. The garden is beautiful and leads down to the River Hull boardwalk. The boardwalk itself is great to sit and stroll. here were the graving docks, the arsenal, the castle once. Lots of statuery, some of slaves. Next door is a herb garden. Many happy hours can be spent here and in the rest of the cobbled old town with its quaint buildings. It is now called the Museum District as other museums are here too.

It does feel a bit like the most unorganised museum in history to begn with with havng to cross back and forth from place to another to progress around the place, but seeing the real mummy upstairs was excellent! Knowing how much it can cost to see a Mummy exhibition, we were shocked that this was just here, with little more than a poster in the front entrance to say that it was. I loved seeing the kids having such a good time in the Victorian , and the room replica ands clothes upstairs as you 'walk through history' was very cool.

Louth was crying out for somewhere like this, and Quackers has filled the market gap with style…read more It's a soft play centre, but it's so much more than that - it also hosts toddler groups, does great kids' parties, has the BEST coffee and snacks on sale and big squashy leather sofas for mums to lounge about on. It's a perfect size - not so big that you lose sight of your children, but not so small that older children don't get any fun out of it. In fact, school-age children love it, and there's also a baby/toddler room for the littlies. There are trampolines, big slides, tunnel slides and climbing ropes, plus a mini football pitch. Oh, and books to read and a dressing-up box! Prices are reasonable and you can pay for everything (including food, drink and snacks) at the end as you leave, which is very convenient. I'd like to specially highlight the fact that the food at Quackers is very healthy - party food includes carrot and cucumber sticks with hummus, and snacks range from jacket potatotes to wholemeal sandwiches (although white ones are available too). It's little extra touches like this that make Quackers worth visiting regularly.
