We have used this service for the last two and half years and cannot tell you how much we have benefited from the support of the coaches that have worked with our son. His confidence has improved with his writing, learning how to organize his thoughts better when tackling history and English Language Arts assignments. He's doing more than just the bare minimum, including more descriptive language and details. He's proactively creating outlines while reading to set himself up for success when trying to remember details later for questions or discussions. He's gotten better at self-advocacy, reaching out to teachers via email, when he's unsure of how to tackle an assignment or something isn't working correctly vs. just ignoring the issue. I looked forward to being around people who enjoyed teaching English, and meeting students from all around the world. If I ever came across a family member or friend who needed English support, I would definitely send them here as well. From a volunteer perspective, the Center provides so much support and training for its teachers (who do not need to be professional teachers, so this helps), including a ready-made curriculum and textbooks. Though I've been an ESL tutor in the past, having this institutional support was important for me as I wanted to be well-prepared for my students. The teaching set-up also requires each class to be taught by two teachers, which is very helpful! The students come from all around the world and have many different reasons for being in the program. I loved laughing with them, learning from them (as well as my co-teachers!!), and even learning a few things about the English language myself.

This is quite a contrast with other schools that focus solely on conversation. Conversation is great for a discussion-focused class, but when you're still learning grammar and vocabulary, it's important to teach these subjects using different techniques (e.g. videos, reading out loud as a class). Both styles of Spanish are studied (Spain and Latin America), which prepares you to speak when traveling to the motherland or any other country in the world. As someone who worked in education as a high school teacher, I've been very impressed with the instructors. They're all talented, patient, professional, and really know how to keep everyone engaged in the class. You can tell there is a rigorous process for teacher selection as the instructors I've interacted with have been top notch (big shout out to Paula and Juan!). The director Tara is very organized and responsive. Right after signing up for a class, you receive automated calendar invites for each class session with all the logistical details. The class price is affordable and there are usually discounts for students who sign up early for future classes after enrolling. Classes are split across two convenient locations: 9th St NW DC (a block away from the Chinatown Metro) and Washington Blvd. in Arlington. I've taken classes in both locations and getting to/from were easy with a car (parking available in Arlington) or riding Metro. I'm now in the Upper Intermediate courses and plan to continue through the advanced levels. Whether you're a beginner or advanced speaker, I highly recommend WLS.
