But a good Yelper doesn't hoard the knowledge, and the physical location of the park is still going to be off the beaten path, so I can be confident in sharing why Oatka Creek Park is a gem. Oatka Creek Park is a little hard to find if you haven't been there before. Luckily, Waze actually recognized the address and got us there in one piece. Basically, you go through an intersection and the park is right there. There was a decent sized parking lot right away, and down the road another, closer to the trail. It's your call which lot is best. The main trail is a loop around the park, the goal to get you down to Oatka Creek itself. And let me say, it's worth the hike. Moving water is the best, for so many reasons. It's not the fastest moving creek, but it's a great one to stop at and take in the sights. I found the trail to be fairly simple, a little uphill and downhill at times, but not the strenuous kind (at least in my eyes). You could even go on horseback if you wanted, and I've seen the horses on the trail. It's a good one for horses, but be advised that with horses comes the not so little presents they leave behind. Watch where you step. Oatka Creek Park is a true gem, so I don't feel too bad about letting the world know about it. Somehow, I feel the serenity and woodland creatures won't go anywhere on a day with more hikers and horses than usual.

It's part of the Genesee Valley Conservancy and they're working on some native plant restoration here which is always great to see. This is a small, no-frills park with room for a few cars to park in a gravel lot near the trailhead. The trails are nicely marked with colored blazes on the trees; pairing that with the PDF map downloaded to a phone made navigation easy. We walked the red trail to the river; it was an easy hike with no major areas of rocks or tree roots, making this a good choice for less sure-footed walkers/hkers. The red trail is an out and back ending at the river. There is river access at that endpoint and it is very worthwhile to go down to spend some time on the shore. The views were beautiful. We came back on the yellow trail which included views of two gorges; one on each side of a wide ridge. We also saw the giant oak marked on the map which was truly impressive and saw the falls which were just a trickle in late September. We cut back over to the red trail on a side trail rather than connect via the blue trail as there was a short section on blue that was too tricky for one person in our group. Yellow was very easy and the connection back to red was as well. Wildflowers were still beautiful in early fall. Heads up that there are no facilities here, so plan ahead!

We just guessed and went upstream based on other reviews we had read. If you go, water shoes might be best and plan on walking up the stream. If no water shoes, don't go after rains - it will be too muddy to make much of the walk and parts of the trail will be covered. Even on the best days you're doing some creek crossing at the waterfalls etc. long story short your feet will likely get wet here. All that said it offers wonderful views of a few waterfalls and a beautiful walk through a gorge. Definitely worth the trip!

When mother nature gives you plenty of snow, one decides to enjoy a little snow on a winter day, and check out a new park. This park is a less then an hour drive from Amherst, NY on the outskirts of Batavia, NY. The interactive nature center/ information building, really was astonishing, in my opinion top notch for a county park. Dave, greeted us as we stepped inside the interactive nature center and were blown away. This place is great for kids, adults, everyone in my opinion, that has adventure in them, and appreciates the outdoors. There's the children's room, information for summer camp, educational exhibits, real life turtle, and many more interesting artifacts. The park offers snowshoe rentals, and the poles for $ 5, and a variety of programing for a small nominal fee depending on event of $5 to help maintain the park. The park offers plenty of trails, and room to explore, along with their Toboggan hills. Clean, spacious ,beautiful location and perfect to beat the winter blues. I highly recommend to utilize the poles provided with the snow shoes. Unfortunately, when you don't you risk potential to fall. Overall, looking forward to coming back soon to explore the park even more.

Me and my husband checked out Genesee County Park this weekend and were very impressed with what it had to offer. I have never been snowshoeing before, but they had a great set up. For $5 you can rent a pair of snowshoes and poles from 12-3 on Sundays. The man working said he would be there until at least 4 so not to worry about being back by 3 which I thought was a nice perk. The park itself was nice, there were lots of paths to explore. The snow came Thursday night into Friday and we explored the park on Sunday. By then there were lots of paths spread around the park made by other snowshoers and cross country skiers which was nice for someone unfamiliar with the park. What really set this park apart though was there information building. For the nature enthusiast you could spend quite a bit of time looking at all of the exhibits and artifacts they had collected there. From nests of every kind to all sorts of animals, to a real life turtle there was lots to explore. There was also an interactive children's room with puppets and more education exhibits. The park had some really cool information about their summercamp for middle and high school students as well. From geocaching to outdoor skills to science the camp really seemed to help prospective students get an idea about some possible careers in the environment. If you're in the area I definitely recommend Genesee County Park in the winter, besides snowshoeing they also have toboggan hills that looked like a great way to cure the cabin fever in winter. I'm excited to come back once the weather warms up and check out what this park has to offer when the weather clears!

If I could summarize the experience at Holley Falls in one word, this would be it: carpooling. Yes, there are a few spots at the base of the waterfall, but they fill up fast. If you're going with others, make sure you share a ride because if you don't, you'll be using valuable hiking time trying to find somewhere to park. I can't even imagine how crowded it can get if someone's having a party or any kind of event. Since you're next to the canal, and the waterfall is basically runoff, get ready for muddy trails. I didn't get stuck or too muddy, but I can imagine it being worse after a rainy day. It's not the worst uphill hike I've ever been on, but it's a good workout nonetheless. You can get pretty close to the falls from some spots on the trail. If you're like me and afraid of getting too close, you still get a good view from further back. There's spots for fishing, plenty of spots for just sitting around, and an overall sense that the park is well maintained. I'll happily return to Holley for a visit to the falls again. It's easy to get to from Rochester and the fresh air is worth the drive. Just make sure you share a ride if you can, you don't want your amazing day eaten up by looking for a parking spot!

In the summertime this area is booming. There's a nice open picnic area, a large pavilion, and a smaller pavilion with large built-in grill. Obviously the biggest attraction in the park is the lake. Surprisingly there were actually a few small boats out on the water in this frigid cold. Great place to check out but I'd recommend doing it on a warmer day!

There are 4 different trails you can hike if you feel up to it but we recommend the Gorge Trail & East Rim Trail. This loop can be difficult on the knees with all the steps and unbalanced areas. Absolutely beautiful park and afterwards you can swim in the clear cold water. We had a blast and was a highlight of our trip.

We did the gorge trail; filled with beautiful rocks, wonderful waterfalls small and big & the greenery. Be prepared to take a few stairs. (On the way and back). When we reached the end of the trail we were a little lost as it isn't a complete loop. We took the west elm trail back which was more woodsy than the first one. This is a peaceful place and camping would be lovely here (there's campgrounds.) aside from wild birds, we did encounter a rabid groundhog that was going in circles, so be wary (I mean this is the case for all wildlife parks!) Bonus, the bathrooms are super clean, probably the cleanest bathrooms I've ever witnessed.
