Back when it was founded it was known as "Beautiful 97" and it aired an easy listening format for nearly forty years. In 2001Mix 96.9 changed to "soft adult contemporary" music and rebranded as "Lite 96.9." Continuously evolving, in 2015, the station changed to "adult contemporary" sounds and rebranded as "Mix 96.9." It's nice to have a local radio station play Christmas music like Mix 96.9 does and this is another station you'll hear played at a lot of local dental offices and places like optical stores. The early morning selections are geared toward a much younger audience, featuring the same artists over and over. It would be good for the station manager to review the playlists and include a wider genre of music in order to appeal to a more mature listening audience as well as the younger crowd. There was just something oddly comforting about the "Obituary Column." Before my day, Leroy and Viola Garrett became the first African-American owners of this radio station in 1958. I was raised around the corner from its location on Jordan Lane. Hundley Batts, Sr., a prominent local businessman and philanthropist, and his wife, bought the station after Leroy Garrett died in 1987. For his successes with WEUP, and other ventures including a long-standing local insurance agency, he was awarded the 2010 Distinguished Service Award by the Madison County Chamber of Commerce and was inducted in to the Alabama Broadcaster's Hall of Fame. Thanks, WEUP for consistently providing local church services, beautiful gospel music including contemporary urban gospel and soul music, and news to the Tennessee Valley!

During the 1980s it was north Alabama's top rated station! The Dunnavant's sold the station to Cumulus Broadcasting in 2003, although the Dunnavant's remain co-ownership with other affiliated radio stations. The Mojo Radio Show is one of their most popular programs. The "Daly Download with Carson Daly" is also popular. They promote the "Sweet Deals" which are often really good deals on things like local golfing passes for super cheap and dining and local attractions at a good discount. I love their "Sweet Deals!" WZYP's format remains Top 40. Although I grew up listening to ZYP, I prefer Sirius XM stations to ZYP'S constant Top 40 playlist. For me, personally, thank you, ZYP for providing the soundtrack of my teen years!
