During the 1980s it was north Alabama's top rated station! The Dunnavant's sold the station to Cumulus Broadcasting in 2003, although the Dunnavant's remain co-ownership with other affiliated radio stations. The Mojo Radio Show is one of their most popular programs. The "Daly Download with Carson Daly" is also popular. They promote the "Sweet Deals" which are often really good deals on things like local golfing passes for super cheap and dining and local attractions at a good discount. I love their "Sweet Deals!" WZYP's format remains Top 40. Although I grew up listening to ZYP, I prefer Sirius XM stations to ZYP'S constant Top 40 playlist. For me, personally, thank you, ZYP for providing the soundtrack of my teen years!

Fun fact: the station was originally owned by the Huntsville Madison County Public Library which led to the call letters Library Radio Huntsville (LRH). The Alabama Educational Television Commission acquired the station in 1977 and owns it today. In 1987 it moved to the location that I know WLRH from (and it's location to this day) on the University of Alabama Huntsville (UAH) campus. Often, we dropped off canned food donations to the campus location to support food drives, or other items to support their other charitable causes they advertised. A local legend, "Microwave Gallaher" hosts a show entitled "Talkin' the Blues" and another local legend, Bob Labbe hosts a show entitled "Reelin' in the Years." "Reelin' in..." is a Friday night show featuring songs from the host's extensive collection of 45 R.P.M. records, covering popular music from the 1950s through the 1980s. John Hightower currently hosts the show. "Talkin' the Blues" airs on Saturday evenings and covers various aspects of blues music. Gallaher began the program while performing during a pledge drive for the station once. Gallaher also does another version of this show for Huntsville's other public station, WJAB, the Alabama A&M University NPR outlet. I did not realize the call letters "WAHR" stand for the founder's name and additional business he ran, Hornbuckle's Record Shop. The call letters AHR stand for "With Arnold Hornbuckle's Records." Arnold founded the radio station in 1959. Arnold opened Hornbuckle's record shop in 1952 and it quickly expanded from record sales to retail musical instruments and home entertainment electronics like Magnavox home entertainment centers. Its playlist is classified as "modern rock," although I consider it heavy on the classic rock side. Back when it was founded it was known as "Beautiful 97" and it aired an easy listening format for nearly forty years. In 2001Mix 96.9 changed to "soft adult contemporary" music and rebranded as "Lite 96.9." Continuously evolving, in 2015, the station changed to "adult contemporary" sounds and rebranded as "Mix 96.9." It's nice to have a local radio station play Christmas music like Mix 96.9 does and this is another station you'll hear played at a lot of local dental offices and places like optical stores. The early morning selections are geared toward a much younger audience, featuring the same artists over and over. It would be good for the station manager to review the playlists and include a wider genre of music in order to appeal to a more mature listening audience as well as the younger crowd. It's published monthly and contains nostalgia, recipes, tips and remedies, stories of family memories and advice, like you would get from your Grandma. It includes pet tips and stories of folks like bootleggers, mill workers ,and moonshiners. It is 48 pages and always printed in black and white and is available at Alabama Goods Store, Star Market, and other Huntsville retailers. Copies of Old Huntsville can be found in boxes (think newspaper machines) throughout North Alabama. Old Huntsville Magazine is home to numerous advertisements for established local businesses, think Lawren's Gift Shop, Linda's Printing, and Laughlin Funeral Home.
