The coffee (jebena) took a long time, but we didn't mind sitting there talking. Note that you are better off calling to book, the online booking system hadn't worked in our case and it does get busy!

When we walked in, we were greeted by the owner. We think that it's a family owned restaurant as their daughter was doing her homework in the back corner of the restaurant. My sister had the lega tibs which are tender cubes of beef topside, sauteed with rosemary, onion, and green peppers. I opted for a vegetarian dish and really loved it. I had the atkilt wot which was fresh carrots, potatoes, green pepper cooked with turmeric, cabbage, and onions in a garlic and ginger sauce. They brought our meals together on a large silver tray with injera, the spongy bread like item that you eat with your meat and vegetables. The chef came out to make sure we knew how to eat it. We were so full and couldn't finish all of our injera. We had a nice time here. I'm not a big fan of the injera. I could do without that and would have enjoyed the rest of the meal but I believe every meal is served with injera. I'd like to try another dish to try out the various Ethiopian flavors. Breakfast is served all day and you can also order appetizers, salads, main/vegetarian dishes, and the combination dinners. Not sure why it isn't more crowded or if it was bit empty because we ate too late. If you're wanting to expand your palate, this would be a sure way to do so!

All jokes aside, the food is very nice and similar in many ways to food from other nearby countries. Perhaps their signature dish is the Sudanese Fried Fish. Other food includes curries, meat and vegetarian stews. Best eaten with kessra bread in the traditional Sudanese way. We had a platter with both the kessra and rice, and certainly the spicy dishes go better with rice than bread. Nice to finish the meal with Sudanese coffee served in a traditional African coffee pot.

The decoration, various paintings and portraits from Ethiopia add to an authentic feel. We ordered both the combination vegetarian and combination meat platters which came served on one plate on top of injera (an airy, light, stretchy Ethiopian bread made from teff flour). The way to eat is traditionally with your hands although they do provide cutlery. You can also ask for more injera if you run out of bread! The various curries all have an earthy flavour but are distinctive. There was a spicy beef, lamb, chicken and vegetables were lentils, carrots, potatoes and spinach. Surprisingly, we were very full after finishing our platter although it didn't look like much when it was first brought out. There's a few interesting Ethiopian beers which we did not try. The owners are friendly and ask our opinion after our meals. We even ask about injera which we've previously found very difficult to make - and they happily chat to us about it. They obviously love what they do. Unfortunately, for what the meals are, African food always seem to be quite pricey. A great place to try something different.

The baristas are exceptionally skilled, and there is a selection of roasts to choose from. While I normally like my coffee black, something that isn't too hard to make, I've had a few flat whites from Penny which have been excellent. A friend of mine asked if they're able to pull a piccolo using soy milk, without the milk splitting. Despite indicating that the barista don't need to try if they haven't made one before, they produced one (after two failed attempts) by slowly adjusting the extraction to the point where they could add a shot to soy milk without producing soy cheese. Doing this despite explicitly not needing to is the sort of above and beyond that earns long-term customers. The food is similarly stellar. The avo on sourdough may at first blush seem like a pricier version of what everyone else is doing. The flavours in Penny's version are, however, inventive and balanced to a point I haven't had elsewhere. There's a nice balance between the feta, dukkah and pomegranate where you can taste all of them without one overpowering the other. The vegetabowl is similarly great. There's just enough of each ingredient that you can taste them, without the dish being overpowered by one note. Penny's interior makes maximal use of the space. There are comfortably sized tables out front and inside, and some bar seating by the espresso machine. The best seats in the house, though, are out back, and include a few longer tables. The staff at Penny are attentive, friendly and great at pulling a coffee and making food.

We found it when it was in the first stages of being open, so just doing coffee. But it was GOOD! Great as a dine in or take away, the coffee had always been the perfect temperature, nice and creamy and never burnt. I still haven't tried the food yet, but it always smells fabulous and the place is packed. Plus while we only come in sporadically, the owner always remembers us and greets us with a smile. I hope it stays around as it is a great little local.
