The cafe is pretty spacious for a NYC spot. On the main floor there are a few seats but the big communal seating is upstairs. My friend and I stopped by for lunch on a Monday at 1pm. It was not too crowded and we waited in line for about 3-5 minutes. The menu has several items. You can pick and create your own or order from the signature dishes which include salad, salmon poke bowls, rolls, etc. I like how they have gluten-free options here too. I decided to create my own and ordered the salmon with cauliflower and beets on quinoa. We got our dishes rather quickly and checked out. At the end of the line there is a big cucumber water you could help yourself to. My lunch itself was pretty good. It was warm and hearty. My favorite was the beets. I was able to finish the whole plate without feeling too stuffed or full. The meal was not bland unlike another Little Beet I've gone to before. I wish the salmon was more thicker though. Don't call me a health freak but I'm all for eating healthy food--only if it's tasty. But this place sure won't be on the top of my list for yummy, healthy options. There are cashiers on both sides that sandwich the kitchen and you'd think you'd be ordering from just the back and there is no huge, giant menu for you to see and analyze before ordering. I got the "Plate" which is nothing compared to a full plate portion because there's like one slice of protein meat and 2 or 3 small sides. I got salmon with string beans and charred broccoli. You think you'd be getting a lot when you're shelling out $14 but no, the box (a standard Whole Foods paper box) was plentiful of spaces. 12/16/16 Okay so today was my third time here, I've learned to stay away from the meats and stick to the sides. My favorites are the Happy Slaw & the Kale. Both are very tasty bursting with flavor, hey who needs meat. A bit pricey, but that's to be expected for a health gluten free meal. Initial visit Off the top Customer Service gets 100%, I think the young man who waited on me was Jose, a true gem and asset to this establishment, he was absolutely fantastic, as I am so indecisive; he allowed me to sample a few sides which helped the decision making process. I ordered the Miso Chicken which is too sweet for my pallet, however I'm usually not a fan of brown rice, but it was pretty tasty and managed to cut down the sweetness a tad bit. Man, where to start? First of all, we walked 12 blocks to get here. I have a gluten and nightshade allergy and we were looking for a little late lunch before we saw a show. Upon entering, a employee was taking out trash, which wouldn't be a big deal, but it leaked liquid from the front door to the ordering register. Once at the register, we proceeded to ask questions about the menu. The woman taking our order gave short answers, and seemed annoyed . At one point she gave a condescending snicker when my husband inquired if they had wraps. We ordered a build your own and got a side of sweet potato mac & cheese (the reason we came). When we sat down to eat, we quickly learned pretty much everything was inedible. The food was absolutely not fresh, and had all the signs of sitting in food warmers for an extremely long time. The chicken was extremly dry and very overcooked, yet only luke warm. The rice had no moisture and was breaking off in chunks, and the mac and cheese had no sauce left and was dry and crusted. After the attempt to eat what we both agreed was the worst food experience we've ever had, we threw it in the trash and walked next door to the Melt Shop. $30 wasted, unacceptable on so many levels. read more

Great food, great service, ample seating. So why 4 stars? Because portions are small and prices are big. You are paying for quality and health though, so I'd keep going back anyway. I usually order the bowls with steak, ancient grain, kale and sweet potato. I've been back 4 times now and every time the steak is so nicely juicy. Little Beet has consistency down. The ancient grain is salted though and is 460 calories by itself though - just a note to those who care. For comparison, the salad base would be just 10 calories according to little Beet. The service is very quick, and polite enough. You can't expect 100% during lunch rush, but they do great under the pressure. If you are looking for a light, healthy meal this is the place for you! The line is long, but the workers move very quickly. It being my first time here, I wasn't sure how to order, but the friendly cashier guided me through the process. Quality has fallen off here for me lately. My two standbys have disappointed me. They've changed the salmon recipe and it's no longer fall-apart tender; the flavor also seems subtly different. The chicken thigh in the Little Beet Bowl has been tough and stringy, and my salad also lacked dressing. They've switched out the sides situation, and I haven't loved their new bok choy or brussels sprouts enough to replace the quinoa'n'beets they displaced. I think the best three things are the Brussel sprouts, the sweet potatoes and the roasted chicken. The chicken is amazing-- it's never dried out or tough--- it's not square cut pieces of chicken-- it's juicy, delicious, amazing chicken. Due to a recent health development, I've had to cut out many foods, one of which (sadly!) is whole wheat so my choices of restaurants have definitely changed. One of my fave places to go to is the Little Beet. Here, I can eat similar foods I once did such as sushi poke bowls (soy sauce has gluten), avocado toast, breakfast wraps etc because everything is certified gluten free so I know I can feast without consequences later! Honestly, is it comparable to "normal" foods? Some are but if you're not gluten intolerant and would like to try, their ingredients are sincerely healthier and more wholesome, leaving you feeling full for the rest of the work day. For breakfast, i've tried the avocado toast, and egg whites and kale which are both scrumptious! Slightly overdosed in EVOO at times, the egg whites and kale comes with a hearty portion of egg whites (i split this into two meals) and a brown rice wrap. Honestly, the brown rice wrap crumples REALLY easier -- my suggestion is to try the roll which is sturdy enough to hold the huge amount of eggs, add substance to your meal. Sometimes a little extra crushed avocado also goes a long way. One thing i LOVE about the little beet is that they carry/distribute a line of delicious gluten free and vegan free banana breads. If you've ever dared to try any gluten free bakery goods -- you know the downfalls. The foods are often dry, tasteless and crumbles immediately into pieces. The little beet distributes from Sans, a company that honestly sells the BEST, moist banana bread I've ever had in my life! Granted it's around 4 bucks for a small piece so eat with moderation! For their normal lunch and dinners, I've had their bowls which are delicious and sounds exactly like the description labeled. For their "Pick You protein and sides" option, I've tried their broccoli, sweet potatoes, lentils, chicken and steak. Honestly, not too impressive -- the broccoli is overcooked and really salty, the lentils are overdosed with oil and the chicken and the steak, very overcooked and dry. Is it bad? Not necessarily, especially for the gluten conscious but if I had other choices, I would definitely try to eat at another restaurant. I have to say I was surprised as to how much I enjoyed having lunch at The Little Beet. The line may get long, but it moves rather quickly, so don't let that deter you. The salmon had the perfect grilled crispness; it was moist, succulent and delicious. The charred kale was crispy and tender. The lentil salad contained oranges, kale and a couple of other things I can't remember but it was wonderful. All three items just went so well together to make a harmonious meal. I could have easily eaten just the sides for lunch and I would have been perfectly happy. I also tried the roasted sweet potato which was divine and the beet quinoa was also very good. I went to this place this weekend with my best friend, who was visiting. She has pretty severe celiacs disease and so we loved that this place was 100% gluten free.
