The decor is quirky and retro without being unnecessarily hipster, and they do cream teas and all sorts of yummies. Quick service, friendly staff, and a really cute (but small and easy to miss) spot for afternoon tea or brunch.

But, in my defense, whilst I knew this place was here, I thought it was the cafe at the bottom of the park - which is always packed to the rafters. This place is right at the back of the park near the Blackheath entrance. Usually I don't walk this way. But I'm so pleased i did! Why? Well they do the yummiest ice cream. Jersey cream ice cream. All tasty and lovely and perfect. The queue wasn't a mile long, the service was friendly, and they hadn't run out of strawberry. They're my new favourite people. A double scoop is £3, but then you get to stroll through the park to the deer enclosure eating ice cream, so it's £3 well spent. There's outside seating as well, but why would you want to sit there when you can get some grass between your toes in the sunshine?! Great find. I'll be walking to the park the back way from now on.

WHY have I only just checked this place out? Seriously, this is my biggest mistake of the summer…read more Why? Because they have to most magical secret patio garden I've ever found. My cafes of choice were a bit busy (there are so many cafes in Greenwich, I have six favourites) so I popped in. And then remembered I'd heard about their little patio. It's amazing. So many plants and flowers and little rickety tables and loveliness. It's like eating amongst the wilderness. And the best bit? I'd actually come to the cafe to work and type away on my laptop. There's a scheme thing in Greenwich that means locals share their wi-fi (I know, aren't we friendly), so yes, I was sat in a garden with flowers and bees with wi-fi on my laptop in the sunshine. Utter Siany happiness. The latte was excellent, all foamy and yum (£2) and the food looked great as it went by to another table. Quiche, soups, sandwiches, that kinda thing. Oh, and that cute little tabby kitty? Friendly as anything, but a little bit camera shy. I'm so taken with this little cafe. But mostly because of the garden. I think I've missed the best of the sunshine now. Wish I'd popped in sooner. This might be my best find of 2010. It's certainly my favourite cafe in Greenwich at the moment.

The Bad: The service wasn't very inviting nor was it attentive or even kind. I'm not sure of why our server/host was so abrasive, but he was. I didn't feel at all like I was in a cafe, but rather more like I was in the home of a host who was not expecting my arrival...in New York. Overall, this was a good change of pace and good tea. While I will applaud the food and tea, I can't suggest coming here without having rather low expectations regarding service and host attitude. Maybe it was just a bad day, and having one unpopular experience isn't fair to this location. As of today, I give the food/tea a "4" but the service gets a poor "2."

My husband and I stopped here last night and got settled on the comfy couch with our chi. I ordered the green refresher to start (lime, honey and soda water) and he an Aperol Spritz. I got the Chardonnay then and was pleasantly surprised how dry and smooth it was. Our food arrived shortly: my butternut squash and feta flatbread and his sweet peppers and mozzarella on sourdough. I was surprised how my dish was presented as I expected one large piece of flatbread with feta and squash atop. Instead the squash and flatbread are cut into chunks presented on the wooden serving plate with the feta serving as a dipping sauce. It's an easily shareable portion size so I'm kinda of a piggy in eating nearly all of it. But the squash chunks were roasted perfectly. It was delicious as was the creamy feta. My husband said his dish was good as well but mine was definitely the star. The only downer was the brownie: it looks great and fudgy but is nothing special. The place has eclectic furnishings, with lots of cool events happening frequently. Definitely a worthwhile addition to SE!

The food menu is focused on bread, with a variety of pastries and sandwiches, pretty standard for a cafe, but not quite extensive enough that I'd want to choose it for lunch. Maybe a few more salads would grab me. Anyway, my wife and I split a latte, and it was quite good, definitely better than the one we had earlier in the day from another nearby cafe. It was also a few p cheaper at £2.40, which I consider a pretty good price. I noticed a "bowl latte" for £2.80 on the menu too, which I could definitely see diving into. The sunshine coming through the big front windows was nice, too, and the place was filled with small groups of people in relaxed conversation amid low-key background music. Overall a very nice atmosphere, good coffee, and just enough funkiness to remind you that you're in Dalston.

Great coffee has come to Streatham!…read more Having lived in Streatham Hill for three years, I was delighted to stroll past the interesting looking Brooks&Gao. With its industrial look and simple menu, the small eatery looks like it would be more at home in a Hoxton street than Streatham High Road! I was delighted to first sample their coffee - a robust and strong tasting latte with some impressive coffee art to boot. I have been back on numerous occasions, taking various people along with me to sample "the best sandwiches in Streatham." One particular favourite of mine is the rare roast beef focaccia with a horseradish Mayo. The breakfasts are slightly on the expensive side and I've had a few raised eyebrows from companions at the cost of the eggs and asparagus dish - around £8. There is an amazing selection of sweet treats and it's different every time you go in. A particular favourite was the cinnamon swirl pastry which was probably the BEST cinnamon swirl I've ever eaten. Hat's off to that. Both Brooks and Gao and their small team of friendly faces are very efficient and helpful. It's always a pleasure to visit!
