Beadazed is a rock shop located in Michigan that winters in Quartzite, AZ just a few miles east of the CA border and the Flying J for cheaper gas. I am not sure if it was this rock shop or not but when Holly T was a baby we bought slabs and bulk rocks (mostly quartz, agates with a hardness of 7) on our CA to AZ trips to visit relatives. I am not sure who came up with the idea (maybe me? or maybe Holly's mom?) but we had collected and purchased lots of rocks for bola ties, belt buckles, etc. One day before Holly was born we decided to make a rock map of the United States from a puzzle. The map was in "process" for at least two years but each visit through ended up with more rocks weighing down the trunk. I rough cut the rocks at the company rock club while Holly's mom expertly fit the rocks together and polished the tops. Upon completion and moving to Long Beach Holly's mom wrote an article for the Lapidary Journal and got it published in 1976 as our bicentennial rock map with photos and descriptions. There was no email nor computers but we received two "crank" letters. One thought we should have had a rock representing every state. Dah, most of the rocks came from AZ or CA with a wide variety of color. The other "crank" complained we should have had rocks for the Great Lakes. Again, dah, the rock map pieces dictated the shape... With that said Beadazed is located on the West Exit across from Carl's Junior. It still has slabs and bulk rocks but has some great collector specimens such as large Brazilian agate geodes (light to dark purple), large citrine geodes (light to dark yellow) plus what I like to call large snails. Anyone who looks at prices for rocks in the big cities will find prices at 1/2 to 1/3 to cost. End of story except passing by Quartzsite does bring back memories...
