They have fun and inclusive sports teams, and enrichment programs that meet a lot of kids' interests and talents. School to parent communication is effective and swift. When our son was brought into Sunset Academy for a tour we set the expectation that he might be…read morebehind socially, as well as a bit bolder or more assertive than other kids due to his size. He would also have trouble with eating on his own and naptime, especially in a new place. The director told us not to worry and helping our son along with all of this was their job, they were the experts with college degrees and training in child development. He did have trouble sleeping, but within a handful of times spent at the center he knew to go to his cot and be quieter, he was learning to model after the other children. However when he awoke crying for mommy and daddy, a common occurrence, they sent him out into the hall alone, then called for his mother to pick him up. This taught him that crying would result in getting what he wants and this was ok, also that nobody at the center would be there for him. The center (on their website when we had signed up) had indicated that we could be part time for the first 2 months our son was in daycare. It was brought up multiple times to the owner during the tour as well as the office Manager Nina that this was the case. our son's first week at the center, the owner and Nina approached our son's mother and indicated that they weren't aware he was only part time. She made it very clear they'd stated that and the owner agreed verbally to allow 2 months to be part time. At the end of May, the owner approached Crystal and indicated that he never said "two months" his policy was "one month" which had at that point changed on the website as well. He told her that she could start June 7th as full time and we adhered to that and started him full time on June 7th. That day, we showed up as planned on Monday and after 1 hour, our son was sent home because they were "understaffed" and unaware that he had been switched to full time (despite the owner being the one who insisted on it, we did not). This was the same monday of the week he was kicked out on Wednesday. Two days before our son being kicked out of Sunset Academy (the day after the above incident), our son's mother was sent home in the morning with a series of 'Incident Reports' from Sunset about our son's trouble sleeping, eating at the appropriate times, and not "interacting" with other children. This is a clear violation of the "Parent's Handbook" that is provided on the Sunset Academy website that indicates they will make every effort to work with the child and their family before forcibly removing them. Two days is not a reasonable amount of time, especially since there were no real details or plans for how we could help improve, just problems we were aware of now. The only thing that was offered was that our son should have his occupational therapist come into the building, which we immediately (that day) arranged with the occupational therapist to find the best day that would work for all parties. In addition, these "incident reports" were handed to us all at once and there was only one with a date on it, which was from a previous week. We were suddenly expected to solve all of these problems in 2 days (with literally only that amount of notice). To be clear, these were not brought up in any official capacity prior to this situation (our son's teacher had indicated he had problems sleeping and adapting but they were working on it, they had reached out asking for some ideas, and we provided them and it seemed to be improving, the teacher even said as such). Before we get into the date he was kicked out, we're like to provide additional incite into the center and how they treated our son during the time he was there. Our son was sent home early from Sunset 2 out of the 3 days he was enrolled . There were a variety of reasons that they provided to us: they had meetings to conduct during our paid time, our son did something they didn't like, or they had some staffing issue. One time in particular one of their faculty was sent in while already injured and they asked for volunteers to come pick up their children-- which we complied with despite it causing us additional stress and our son having had little time in the center. Often when our son came home after being at Sunset, he would be extremely hungry and thirsty. When we would watch on the video, they would place him in front of his food, he would wander off, and occasionally they'd put him back but in most cases that we saw, they did not... I have enrolled my 2 y.o. daughter into Lyons Academy after a negative experience at a different…read moreday care. Within a week my daughter started being excited about going to day care again! After a month she was giving hugs (on her own!) to the teacher to say good bye. I get regular updates about her time indoors, outdoors, potty training, meals, naps, etc. The facilities are comfortable and well equipped for babies and toddlers alike. All the communication with the staff is professional and the administration was flexible about the days that I needed for my daughter. Overall, I highly recommend Lyons Academy to all parents in the City Park area for the care of their children.

I hesitate to write this review because I know how difficult it is to find daycare in Denver, but I…read morefeel the need to warn people about my family's experience. I sent an inquiry on a Tuesday to The Lions Academy to schedule a tour for my daughter. In the initial email I mentioned that she was 13 months old. I heard back that they had an immediate opening and that we could come tour that day. We went to the tour and had a good first impression and decided to enroll. During the tour, we discussed that my 13 month old is not yet walking. There was no mention of this being an issue or even potentially being an issue. We also discussed that we were hoping for 3x a week, but that we were flexible as we understand that places prefer full-time enrollment. The director said 3x a week was not an issue. We enrolled later that day (Tuesday), paid the enrollment fee, and first month's tuition. We purchased all of the supplies that were requested over the weekend, which was about $100 if you include the pack of diapers we purchased to bring. We dropped her off that following Monday. When we picked her up, they said everything went well. I sent an email later that evening with some follow up questions to clarify a couple of things that we didn't speak about when we picked her up. About 45 minutes later, I received an email from the director asking me to call her. I thought nothing of it, thinking she figured it would be easier to discuss the couple of questions I had over a call rather than by email. When I called, she told me that she had "heard from licensing" and that because my daughter is not walking, they could not have her under their license, and that there was no longer room for her. I said I was confused as to how this was just coming up almost a week later as we specifically discussed her age and that she wasn't walking. I was told that she "didn't think it would be an issue." She then said that we would receive a refund minus the amount for the one day she spent there. At no point during that conversation or in any of the conversations following to coordinate the refund and picking up her items did I receive any form of an apology or even a shred of humility or remorse. Obviously this was a shock and an inconvenience to say the least. It was also surprising to me that we were not offered a full refund. But the real reason I write this review is because I find it incredibly concerning that the director of this program does not even know the requirements of the licenses she has. I find it inexcusable that she did not know that my daughter would need to be in the infant room under their license. I find it even more inexcusable that she clearly did not go through the proper steps to ensure that my child was eligible for their program before she promised us a spot, enrolled us, and took her for the day. I find it inexcusable that she had 6 days from the day we toured until my daughter's first day to confirm the requirements of her license if she was not sure, and she did not do that until after the first day. However, the most concerning aspect is that she clearly had my daughter at her facility for an entire day in violation of her license. There is of course the possibility that the above explanation was just an excuse and her not being able to walk was simply an issue of preference or that another family wanted to enroll full-time right after we enrolled so they needed to make room. Either way, I would not recommend this facility to any family in Denver if you can avoid it. They clearly do not know what they're doing and they clearly do not care. It is difficult enough to trust even the most competent person you know with the care of your child. This place is not worth the risk.

Our younger son will start at BMS when he reaches 18 months and we are thrilled to have him benefit from all things BMS. Some aspects of BMS which contribute to our satisfaction: 1) tenure of teachers - several teachers & administrators have been with BMS since founding in the 1970s. many others have been with the school for 10-20 years. 2) sense of community - BMS embraces its families as their own. 3) empowering children - Montessori gives children the power to thrive in independence. From serving their own food and clearing their own dishes, to finding a sense of order in how kid's structure their "work", our son finds extreme happiness in managing his own little world.

We also love their sports and fine arts programs. My kids are involved in both, and they have had amazing experiences. Regardless, someone is always in the room the children are in, even during nap time, and kids are checked and changed regularly. (Which is amazing considering my daughter has separation anxiety when I leave a room any other time.) I find Nelda to be very professional and nurturing with all of the children in her care.
