Laksa House - "Hawker Curry Chicken"

Good location close to Melbourne Central and Vic Market, staff are nice and quick and the lovely lady who is often at the counter has my regular order committed to memory. Long live Laksa House, if I had to find a new place I would be devastated

There was a…read morebig sign at the door advertising for more hiring, even there were three waitresses working on the small-sized 10 table floor already. While my partner insisted on ordering the Hainan Chicken, which arrived quickly, my order of "Hawker Laksa" took a significantly longer time to be served. In fact, my partner had already finished her meal by the time my bowl of laksa arrived. Although the restaurant has been in this location for quite some time, I was surprised that the waitresses were not taking orders. Instead, customers were required to approach the counter and place orders with a counter person there, who would then give a number stand to be set on the table. The Hainan chicken was okay, yet the fine chopped ginger was an additional $1 charge? On the other hand, my laksa was delicious and I could tell it was made with the authentic ingredients of that Hawker Street. While the restaurant was not very busy at the time, I found it frustrating that my partner and I were not served at the same time, and the wait for my food was quite long. Given this, it would have been nice for the staff to provide a clearer explanation for the delay. However, despite the wait, I must say that the laksa was well worth it. In fact, I would recommend trying the laksa despite the long wait.

We sometimes go here because it's conveniently close by and relatively cheap. Some of the dishes…read moreare hits, some not so much. BBQ pork laksa had a nice broth, but the pork was tough and not very flavourful. The Hokkien noodle had a decent sauce. The tom yum fried rice was tasty but a little salty. Nice ingredients. The grass jelly iced tea had little flavour aside from brown sugar. The so-called chicken satay wasn't even satay. It was fried chicken on skewers, flavored with turmeric. It's a bit like the chef is doing rough analogies of Malaysian dishes. That said, the place seems to be doing quite well and has been around for years. Good place for cheap eats but don't go here for an authentic Malaysian food experience.

Average priced and disappointing. I had been craving a delicious spicy laksa, beef rendang, and…read moresome roti canai. A friend had recommended this place and so four of us went out here for dinner on a Friday night. Service is quick. Menu is expansive with a large range of appetisers, a few noodle dishes, curries, laksas, and even Thai food (so bizarre). Meals are for person only and not for sharing. We ordered the following: 1. Traditional curry laksa which arrived with one mussel (literally), some prawns, two pieces of white fish, and some tofu in an average sized bowl. The laksa was served at room temperature. It was yellow in colour, not super creamy or thick (so lacked the creaminess and flavour of coconut milk) and tasted like turmeric only. Not spicy at all. Even the extra sambal I asked for didn't help with the flavour. It lacked flavour. 2. Nasi lemak with beef rendang - the beef rendang tasted exactly like the chicken curry that came with the sliced up cold roti canai. My friend couldn't even tell if he was eating beef or chicken. Fail. 3. Char po hee - goeey looking rice noodles covered in an eggy slime and hiding mushrooms underneath tasted like nothing. Just slimey. We left most of it behind. Cash only too. Very disappointing. Restaurant is clean. Service is quick because the food is not fresh and served at room temperature or cold.

What's going on? It's rare for me to visit a venue more than once a week. But I visited Ayam Chef 3…read moretimes in a week and it performed solidly. Got myself hooked - great food and price as well as a location that is convenient to me with no parking traumas. The decor is modern Malaysian and the staff attentive. Clearly there are experienced hands back of house. I'm told that the people behind this venue are the former owners of Kota Raya Malaysian food in Elsternwick. The Kota Rayas long had a reputation for the best Hainan Chicken rice in the southern suburbs. So naturally both the Hainan and roast chicken rice dishes are notable. In the stir fried dishes the wok hei - breath of the wok - is all there, especially in the cha hor fun. The focus is Nonya hawker food, so you won't find Mamak(indian) specialities like mee goreng, but you will observe that there's a specials board, an occasional dessert special like durian crêpe cake and interesting menu items like the school prawn pancake. The curry puffs are tasty but I personally prefer the Singaporean style flaky pastry puffs containing hard boiled egg over at Mr Loys puff. Not a big deal. The chicken satays they call 'skewers' here are big, hearty and tasty. This generousity carries through to most dishes so if dining in the evening go with friends and share plates. The lunch menu has meal sets ideal for one person, plus the regular menu is available. The lunch special of pepper beef came with rice, fried wonton and salad. The drinks list is small but I am so hooked on their kumquat drink my eyes glaze over once they've read those words. There is outdoor seating for sunny days and those who lace their palate with nicotine. Take away is also available. Parking outside is 2 hours metered before 6:30pm weekdays. But just near Victoria Barracks it is also accessible by Sturt Street and St.Kilda Road trams. After four visits I still haven't exhausted the menu. I'll definitely be back. Hey - might see you there?
