Simple. Convenient. Local…read more I was spending a few days in town locally. I had the opportunity to stop in a couple times. This market is the main cafe, convenience store and gas station in a small rural town with a population of just over 150 residents. Service was friendly and prompt. Coffee was hot. I stopped in one morning to have breakfast. I ordered their Denver Omelet which is a three egg omelet filled with diced tomatoes, green peppers, onion and chunks of ham for $11.70. I added cheese for an additional 60 cents. It comes with hash browns and your choice of toast. Quite a hearty breakfast and very reasonably priced! I enjoyed the omelet so much that I went back the next day and ordered the same thing. There were 4 or 5 different folks working in the cafe / store when I was there. They seemed to share different roles from waiting, cashier, pumping gas and minding the store. The store itself carries a variety of essentials, frozen meats & seafoods, beverages and snack items, typical for many other convenience stores. Should I visit the area again in the future, I would definitely stop in for breakfast.

We were there recently and stayed next door at the Riverbend Motel. The cafe is part of the market…read moreand as another person noted there is generally one person (The owner) doing everything. She does take a couple days off so there are others that work as well when it is busy, and when she can find the help. The food is good and she gladly made me a custom sandwich one morning. I know she is interested in retiring so that could happen and they could close. I will post pictures of inside and outside soon.

Maybe it's the boredom of running a business in Shaniko, Oregon? Maybe tired of the crap that some…read moretourists can deliver? (Oh, I'm sure it's a LOT!) Whatever it is - this is NOT a "friendly place". Think of the Seinfeld "Soup Nazi" sort of experience. There's a gruff old dude who runs the place, and he is NOT friendly. Doesn't say anything at all - even if you say "Hi" - he will just keep staring into space, listening to his talk radio in the background. The place is filled with cigarette smoke - not sure why other than the proprietor smokes. BUT .... if you can deal with all of that? It's a very decent little shop to stop and get stuff you need - snacks, water, POPCORN (from his popping machine), tacky souvenirs, beer, box wine, whatever..... 5 stars for "glad this place is here" and to help offset the otherwise crappy reviews. Considering you're in the MIDDLE OF NOWHERE, and you can get all this stuff in one quick stop off of Highway 97, what's not to like? Just be aware of what it's going to be like, don't expect more, and get on your way :-) 5 Yelp Stars "for what it is"

Just happened to hit town when this place was having their grand opening. Self service, unbranded…read moregasoline is all they sell at the moment but it looks like they are building a patio out back so there could be some sort of food service there come next Spring. Odd time of year to re-open a business.... Shaniko is mostly a whistle stop Tourist "Ghost Town"..... popular from Spring to Fall but pretty dead except for a few full year locals during Winter. The owner seemed hospitable enough and was giving kids rides on the fire department "golf cart".... I was happy to see this place open again and always hope that the small businesses in this fun little town thrive. The nearest gas AFAIK is in Maupin if you are heading over the Bakeoven Road. Redmond if traveling south. There are some card lock stations on 97 north. The Hatts in Wasco may still be open. If not, the next gas would be in Biggs, all quite some distance from Shaniko. For the uninitiated, this gas station has been closed for at least ten years... probably closer to 15 years. Maybe even twenty. Suffice it to say that it's been closed for a way long time. So.... the negative, one star yelp reviews posted before October, 2019 and after ~ 2000 are totally bogus. The place was closed so how could anyone there be "rude" or "unhelpful"?

This place used to be open as a gas station many (MANY) years ago. For anyone on a motorcycle,…read morethis was a valued business since the gas stations in Moro, Grass Valley and so on all closed over the years. Nearest gasoline now is Biggs Jct, Madras and Maupin (regular gas only). So it was a welcome sight when I came by for my bi-annual photo visit to Shaniko and saw that new owners had opened it back up. There has been a vintage Texaco station in Shaniko forever but I don't know that it was ever operational. If it was, it was way before my time. A fellow from Vancouver (USA) owns it as well as the Studebaker shop and garage next door. Nice folks. I was there for the open house a few years ago and they had food and snacks for free. Since then all I've seen is a single, usually young employee there. Regular gasoline and diesel only. There are a small number of year-round residents here but many are snowbirds. A few of the vendors live in nearby larger cities. Due to the gas prices hard to say if this biz makes sufficient profit to stay in business but I hope they do. The hotel is being refurbished with the plan of opening December, 2022 so that could help sales some. Shaniko used to be a busy tourist stop 30-odd years ago but interest died off after the hotel closed due to a dispute about water. Of course there are those die-hards like us who come by every Spring and Fall to visit with a few of the locals we have come to very much like.
