The first time we came to Bob, we showed up at around 2pm, and he suggested we skip out on kayaking for the day and come back the morning of the next day, due to the pick up in wind in the afternoon. As an alternative, he also suggested we go to the Trees of Mystery. After some conversation with my group, we decided we'll take up his suggestion, and thank goodness we did! We left to Trees of Mystery (which was a blast by the way) and came back the next day to go kayaking at 10am, as opposed to 2pm. Toward the end of the river journey in the afternoon, the wind became brutal to paddle against; precisely as Bob had suggested the day before. He is a straightforward and honest salesman, and just wants you to have the best experience possible. Curtis was also extremely helpful with anything we needed!

This is a small store that serves its purpose. It is scattered a bit around the edges like being in someone's personal collection of treasures. The center portion has fishing lures and hunting gear and this is well organized. I got fairly distracted by the allure of the lures. The people working were nice and very conversational. This was local and not a fast stop but it felt comfortable and low key.

This was when I called them at 4pm Tuesday. Um... It came in on Thursday? No call from them on Thursday, Friday, Monday, Tuesday. Really?!?!? I told them I needed to cancel the other orders and I'd call them back. I finally got a confirmation on my cancelled order with Northwood and called Gunners to schedule the install. Vikki told me THEY SOLD MY DOOR because I didn't call back! Really?!?!? I called back just over 24 hours later! They never called me once, gave me the run around for months and then screwed me over! In recent times,…read moreBig 5 has sort of been on a downslope in it's corporate life-cycle-- they used to be the go-to store for all sorts of active wear, sporting goods, athletic equipment and specialty gear for hunting and fishing. Now, they're sort of like a shoe store that sells guns. But I enjoy visiting Big 5 stores that are outside of Southern California. You see, Big 5 franchises tend to be small enough and far enough away from their Corporate Masters that local stores have some say in what merchandise lands on the shelves. Therefore, when I visit a place like the Crescent City location, I can find fishing gear that is local to the river steelhead and ocean lingcod scene that I can't find in my local Pasadena store (well, before it burned down, at least...) In the summer months, this is also a good place to find a cheapie float tube to goof around in the Smith or the Klamath... or if I forgot to pack fishing line for those epic redtail perch bites out on the sandy stretches south of town... this place is my jam. Sure, they also sell nylon workout bands and compression underwear... but let's keep this outdoorsy and just end it right there.
