So, my friend recommended the Village Belle Hotel as he said we were guaranteed to get a seat. The venue is massive with an upstairs, downstairs, and outdoor seating. They have a large cocktails menu and a succinct dinner menu. We decided to order a carafe of Pimm's cup as my friend likes gin and wanted a summery cocktail, the yuzu salmon to start off with, and the lamb shoulder for two as our main. The salmon yuzu arrived before our drinks. The cured salmon was served with grapefruit and pomegranate seeds. The taste was tangy, sour, and soy sauce like, but delicious. Pimms was overly sweet and I could barely taste the alcohol. The lamb shoulder was quite disappointing. Though the meat was tender and it was a large portion size served with crunchy broccoli, beans, brussel sprouts, and zucchini, it lacked flavour. I couldn't taste salt or pepper or anything and there was none on our table. I think it was just lamb cooked in its own juices and that's what we had been served. Quite disappointing.

They have live music here, though the only time that I have been here late enough to see a gig it was country and western, not exactly my favourite style of music. They also have a pretty cool beer garden, part of it being under cover another part of it being out in the open. Okay, from the outside it looks like a pretty run down place, but once you step inside you find yourself in one of those cool inner-city pubs.

But here's the problem, the bar person let my colleague close the tab, and then charged my card, but wouldn't hand over the card, even after my colleague offered to get me on the phone. So, understand this, they understood enough to charge my card, but not enough to hand said card over to the person who they obviously understood was drinking with me. I now need to travel 45 minutes tomorrow to get my card and license. Really?

Unless if you are here for business and need to work from the room, you shouldn't find this inconvenient. Although I've kept using free wifi which they say "low speed", I didn't find excruciatingly painful even when I was streaming(yes, it does buffer occasionally). Price is roughly $100~120 a night for single. Not bad, considering the location, service and size of the room.

I stayed here because I had a long layover in Melbourne. The hotel is considered boutique with contemporary decor, friendly staff, and a cafe downstairs. There's a gym and roof deck too. They don't have adapters available for plugs if you're from the US but they do have USB adapters-- at the very least you can charge your device but probably not a laptop. The rooms were clean and quiet. My phone wasn't working though so I had to go downstairs anytime I had a question. I would have liked more options for food in the rooms. You only had chips and popcorn to choose from and a few beverages in the mini fridge. It's close enough to walk to the water - I only wish I had more time here. They arranged for a driver to bring me to the airport which ended up being more economical than taking a taxi. Any my driver was fantastic! His name is Robert. Would recommend staying here!

However, the place does get super crowded (ie: opens at Noon and by 1:00pm it was completely packed outside). We had nachos, fish and chips and salads, and they were all really decent. Personally, the venue was a little too chaotic for my liking compared to other pubs/beer gardens in the area, so this would be a 3.5 star review, but we had a good lunch, and I'd return for sure, so going with 4 for benefit of the doubt.

Collage Lawn is located in a perfect position for those who want to start drinking on Chapel St, then decided to go to the Belgium Beer Gardens and start to walk there through Greville St and realise that although it is quite a short walk they are thirst again for more beer. This is actually the first pub that I have seen in Melbourne that doubles as a backpackers. I am sure that there are many more but I have not noticed yet, most likely because I have a home. If I were a backpacker in Melbourne, this is the perfect location.
