Looked for a place to have a nice lunch in Brunswick. Compared with two other local "Japanese" restaurants in the area and chose Little Tokyo. The place looks clean, the decor is a mix of Chinese and Japanese. None of the staff are Japanese which worried me at the start. I ordered vegetable tampura and a teriyaki chicken bento box. Tampura batter is heavy and greasy. The dipping sauce for it was the same broth that made the miso soup which was way too salty. Basic salad was the best tasting thing on my plate, ice cold, fresh with a tasty dressing. Rice under my teriyaki was dry and crunchy in places. The chicken was cooked nicely but the teriyaki sauce was very bland. The California roll provided was old and all of its contents were soft and mushy. Yuk! Consistent, great atmosphere, and awesome sushi. This place ticks every box for me, and is my go-to for dinner with Mom or a friend.

The teriyaki chicken is all dark meat. I paid an extra $5 to sub out the white rice for noodles and were told they were teriyaki. They were very bland. My drink was far too strong (I know, most people would appreciate that, but I could not even drink it. My husband's sushi was okay but several pieces of the fish were very tough or dry. Disappointing. Rude. Started the meal with underdone edamame. Then, a spicy tuna roll that looked unappetizing and tasted anything but fresh. But everything really started to fall apart when our entrees arrived. We both had ordered noodle soup. On the menu it says it comes with chicken and salmon in the soup, and shrimp tempura on the side. My friend didn't want her shrimp, and I didn't want the salmon, so we decided that I'd give her my salmon and she'd give me her shrimp. We both ordered noodle soup with soba noodles; we both got soup with udon noodles (the really thick, chewy ones). Ughhhh. Perhaps were would have said something to the waiter, but he didn't come back to our table for a really long time and my friend was really hungry. We shrugged. Unfortunately, both of our soups were also filled with cooked shrimp, which was unexpected since the menu did not say anything about shrimp in the soup. We tried to go with it, her fishing out the shrimp from hers into my bowl, and me giving her all my salmon. There was so much shrimp, and it didn't even taste good. Honestly, the broth wasn't great either. Really nothing about this soup was good. We didn't see the waiter for quite a while, and by then I was done even bothering to try to like the soup. I explained our issues, and he agreed to remove mine from the bill because I hadn't really eaten any of it. Since my friend had eaten some of hers (not even half), I guess he was assuming she was fine with hers. The kicker, the reason I'm writing this review, is that after all this, a different worker came out from the kitchen and started trying to explain that "for future reference" we can special order the noodle soup however we want. But he didn't seem to understand that they had given us food that didn't match up with the menu! He kept insisting this point, insinuating that it was our fault that we had ordered the wrong thing, that we hadn't specifically told them not to put ingredients in it that weren't listed on the menu. So, for "future reference," I will not be coming back to this poor excuse for a restaurant. There's better Japanese food in Brunswick anyway. read more

I can only guess that the food is good. However I placed a to go order this very evening at 6:30pm. I was told that my order would be ready in 25 minutes. I have been waiting for more then 90 minutes for my food. The restaurant is over packed with dine in service, even though they are only allowed to be at 50% due to COVID. There is a crowd outside waiting for food. Very poor communication at this restaurant. Almost two hours till it order was ready. I would have left but I already paid. My daughter and I went here for lunch to celebrate my birthday and I have to say our experience was better than my previous one. We each got a bento lunch... mine was the tempura shrimp and soft shell crab rolls . My daughter got the chicken teriyaki... that is as adventurous as she will ever get. Both of us enjoyed our meals. The tempura was light, crisp and non greasy. My daughter's chicken teriyaki was well done. Her attempts to use chopsticks were dismal. The service was efficient and polite, if a little impersonal. Nevertheless, our experience was better than our last visit so I feel the need to add another star. read more

At first I was thrilled that a sushi restaurant was coming to Brunswick, ME, a place where ethnic food is accepted more than neighboring counties. I suppose it was no surprise to me that on opening weekend the meat and fried appetizers were flying out of the kitchen whereas the sushi chefs looked bored with the lack of orders coming their way; I chose to remedy that. I ordered various maki's and nigiri's, and while some were average, the mackerel was very oily and fresh (a good thing for you sushi novices out there), and the uni nigiri I ordered came with a dab of wasabi underneath freshly cooked rice as to almost pass on the message from the sushi chefs: "Finally, someone orders something other than a california roll" The salmon roll was a miss, reminding me more of the sushi I could get at Hannaford when I don't feel like cooking as opposed to a Japanese Restaurant; The vegetables and rice was unexceptional, and in the loosely packed roll was a 1:3 ratio of salmon to vegetables, very lackluster. The rice was very tightly pressed as I was unable to discern between each grain on my roll, a letdown to the light, airy and fresh uni sushi I had at the same time. As for cooked food the gyozas reminded me of the frozen brand I get for party favors, and I found it rather unexceptional. My mom's chicken was simply fried chicken with a ponzu sauce over greens, as opposed to flavorful, marinated chicken over rice. And the house dressing? It was (bleh) ranch, are you kidding me? If the owner is reading this, make your own ginger dressing, it's quite easy and I promise, the Mainers will like it. Hailing from NYC, this would not last anywhere in a major city, making the 5 star Boston review quite suspect. It appears this place has been sabotaged by the staff as well due to the professional "amateur" photography and suspiciously high number of 5 star reviews. Shame. I recommend going the extra 15 minutes to Miyako in Freeport or making the trek to Portland if you're looking for sushi. I had my hopes up for this place and it was at best, average. read more

Wow. The sushi and the tonkatsu at Little Tokyo were really good and I'd go back just for that but there's more. The portions were large enough to make sure I'll be back. So they've got quantity and quality. Anything else? Well, the service was really good too. Expensive? Dinner for two with too much food, plenty to drink, tax, and tip were $85. It was worth every penny. Maybe it was just a good night and we got lucky, but I don't think so. This was the best meal of our trip. Pretty standard mid-range Japanese food here. We had a few maki rolls, edamame, miso soup, starter salad, and stir fried soba with beef. The sweet potato maki was a standout, the crunch of the fried sweet potato lovely textural contrast with the rice. The salad a low point. As is so bafflingly common, they choose to serve a salad of bland, out of season vegetables. A single underripe tomato wedge sullenly glares at you from the plate. They have "bento" lunches, but these are not served in a bento box as one might expect. Stupendous. Top to bottom excellence. Our scorpion bowl was smallish but potent and the rolls we selected didn't produce a bad bite. Service: really good. Our server was quiet, fast, and pleasant. Didn't get a name but he was efficient. Also, you get these warm towels with your water, they smell amazing and start you off on the right foot Food: again, I didn't find a bite I didn't like. We ordered the crazy roll, California, Philadelphia, spicy scallop, and volcano. Each were well-rolled and very tasty, although the Philadelphia was a little cream cheese-heavy for my liking. The edamame we had for an appetizer was salted to perfection and a solid portion for two. Another perk, and an aspect of sushi that does t receive enough attention, was the ginger and wasabi. The ginger was flavorful and crisp, very effective in cleansing the palate. The wasabi actually had a bite too. There is nothing worse than weak wasabi and the type they use clears your sinus, just like it should. General: I would, and will go again. Really strong performance and not much to improve upon. Maybe this could be the best Japanese restaurant in town, but I'm glad this was just a quick stop for late lunch on our road trip. They have great lunch menu prices, but we missed it. Come here for the maki - it's not expensive and decent bites. Do NOT come here for sashimi - some of us got the Chirashi and I could easily tell that the fish has been frozen. I could taste the watery-ness of the fish and some pieces were even still partially frozen - could the chef not tell it's frozen while slicing the fish? Also while a Japanese restaurant, ambiance is not authentic in any way. It's your classic Japanese American restaurant. read more

I've heard great things about Little Tokyo. I went by myself and was seated at the sushi bar. I ordered two specialty rolls, the Golden Banana and Bowdoin. I chose the Golden Banana roll because the combination sounded very interesting and I had never tried a roll like it before. Although I knew this would be a gamble, I did not like it and will not order it again. The Bowdoin roll was pretty good, but I think I will try other rolls next time. Beautiful presentations. Please see picture. With water as my drink, the two rolls cost 22.00. Not terrible for "specialty rolls." This was a very busy restaurant, and everyone else seemed very pleased with their food choices. Do not let my experience deter you from eating at Little Tokyo. I will definitely go again, but think that I ordered the wrong rolls. The spicy tuna, salmon, and a roll with the word angel in it all looked VERY tasty. I will try these next time. read more

The food here is very good. There's nothing amazingly special about it, it's a typical Japanese restaurant selection of slightly above average quality. Unfortunately, the prices here are high compared to other similar restaurants, and there is a lot of competition. Four stars because it's a great effort and a lovely place... Okay, so... this place only gets 4 stars because our waiter was an absolute GEM. Hands down the sweetest man in the state of Maine. Other than our waiter, our experience was subpar. We got a bento box with salad, soup, edamame, sushi, and teriyaki steak with rice . On the menu it said that the bento box included veggies, but there weren't any veggies to be found. Great spot in Brunswick if you're craving Japanese food. They were very busy when we arrived and there was a wait but we were seated shortly after which is always a plus when you come in hungry! We ordered two maki rolls, the Idaho and the spicy tuna. Idaho rolls are great if you're still new to the sushi scene or just love sweet potatoes like we do. Each roll gives 6 pieces. We also ordered the soba noodles with vegetables which came with soup and salad as an appetizer. All dishes were delicious and would definitely order again. Only complaint would be the size of the sushi rolls as they are on the smaller size compared to other places we have been to. Otherwise, a great night out with great food! So good! If you time it right, the service is impeccably fast. The sushi is fresh, delicious, and the best In the area. We always get an order of the seaweed salad and miso to start. We haven't had a single order of sushi yet that fails to impress. Occasionally, you will hit a night where it is considerably crowded and, as any restaurant goer should know, wait times start to Creep up. Despite this, we still were in and out in a reasonable amount of time and enjoyed the experience thoroughly. (So much so that we are repeat customers) Possibly the best sushi in the area with a large menu. The ambiance inside is nice and the waitstaff is friendly and helpful. read more

I've eaten here three times this summer and it never disappoints. Some of the best sushi (and sushi rice) anywhere. I've eaten in and carried out. One member of our party ordered Udon noodles w/ chicken, and thought it was OK, but she really liked the dumplings. Personally, my only problem w/ this restaurant was that during our second visit, the owners (I assume husband and wife) were arguing ad nauseum, and the woman walked out. Obviously it didn't keep us from going back, but it was an awkward situation. Brunswick has lots of options for international cuisine and I hope to try many more. P.S. I rarely if ever give 5 stars, and wished I couldn't give 3.5. I would never order Udon anything, but felt I should factor it into the equation. If Kuru Kuru moved here they can make a big hit!! Tempra was good, but over price compairing to Kabuki restaurant in Hawaii.... We have eaten here several times and everything has been wonderful. Yes, the young woman who runs Little Tokyo is a doll who comes to your table, all smiles, to be sure everything is as good as you expected. The hot towels before the meal are a treat and the atmosphere is delightful. The entrees come with miso soup, salad and rice. All that ends up being quite a bargain. The teriakis are very good as are the noodle dishes. Do not be afraid of raw fish. All sushi does not have raw fish and their menu will guide you as to the ingredients. Last time we were there, we tried a raw tuna appetizer and it was very good. If Bobby Flay on the Food Network can happily prepare and eat raw tuna, then it must be safe and delicious! I was very disappointed especially since I'm a huge Japanese food fanatic, but besides that the server brought our water over when we just sat down, but there was no straw and I asked for one she literally brought one over with no paper or anything on it & she held the (naked) straw with her bare hand and then when she brought the food to us with the fork she literally just threw on the table and walked away. I was like wow with all this Covid still prominent lol thought I was just being too much, but my friend literally felt the same way. We used to visit another sushi place in Brunswick but started noticing the other place was getting dirty. When the front of the house is not clean you have to wonder about the back. So we have been to little tokoyo a few times now. Sometimes the service is superb and sometimes ok. Depends on waitstaff. The food has always been excellent but note it comes quickly so you may want to ask to slow it down. The restaurant is clean. Seats in the window section more intimate and cozy. The row in front of sushi bar not as comfortable. You r in the middle and open. Would definitely recommend for good sushi and service. Came here tonight, Monday 17 April. First encounter was with the host, some young guy who sat us at a 2 seater table. Knowing how we eat, I requested a bigger table, with attitude he seated us at a 4 seater and repeatedly complained that he's supposed to reserve the 4 seater tables. Service seemed to be really slow (for my friend and I) while everyone else around us seemed to be getting their food before us, even though they definitely showed up after us. Our boba tea was very watered down. He ordered avocado while I ordered taro boba, yet they both tasted the same. The sushi was mediocre and seemed to be such small portions. Being one of the very few asian restaurants around town, this place is pretty decent. The stir-fry udon/soba bento is delicious and reasonably priced if you come in for lunch. (I'm not sure about dinner) It comes with soup, salad, and your choice of 3 pieces of a cali roll, cucumber avocado, or spicy tuna. I've gotten the california roll twice but it is definitely not the best/the freshest. ALSO, do not get the bubble tea unless you like it not so sweet. The boba itself was chewy and good, but the milk tea tasted diluted.. Service has always been great! The first time I went, I got free edamame while I waited for the food. Big city courtesy in a little town. My partner and I dropped in on a snowy Friday around 5:30. Many, many open tables. We were offered a 2-top but asked for more space, since there were so many open tables (like eight -- I took a picture). We were flatly denied ("we like to keep those tables free in case groups come in"). I then suggested to them that perhaps we would instead walk up the next block to Aki, another nearby Japanese restaurant. They said "fine" and waved us out. In the 45 minutes we would've taken to eat, there was no way the place would fill. There's really no excuse for watching money walk out your door and go to your competitor like this. If you take reservations, then tell people. Put up table tents with "reserved" on them. At the very least, treat potential returnees with courtesy and respect. read more

Good selection of vegetarian and vegan options. I ordered two rolls-crispy tofu inari and sweet potato tempura. Both were excellent-great balance of textures. Nice size portion for just $4 per roll. My soy milk bubble tea was also delicious! Service was quick and friendly, and I really like the atmosphere here. My only complaint is about the tempura that my family and I split as an appetizer.
