I signed up for an introduction to Bollywood class in the spring on a whim, and found myself looking forward to each session as the highlight of my week. I enjoyed it so much that this term I signed up for more classes and am dancing there four days a week. I feel terrific and energized, and I am having SO MUCH FUN. The teachers that I've had have been great- patient, good at explaning things, enthusiastic, and great dancers and choreographers. The classes I've taken have been low pressure and unintimidating, geared towards adult hobby dancers, rather than professionals. And even so, I've been learning a ton and the teachers are really experts. The school offers lots of different classes with an emphasis on jazz and jazz-inspired classes, including funk, hip hop, breaking, and house. But they also offer other classes like ballet, tap, and capoeira. The intro classes are truly intro classes for people with no experience in that style of dance, or with no dance experience at all. And the non-intro classes come in a range of skill levels for people who already know what they're doing. I find the classes to be very reasonably priced, the studios are large and in good condition, and all of the staff is great. I'll take off .00001 of a star because I think "Decidedly Jazz" has got to be one of the worst names for a dance school I've ever heard :) But it still rounds up to five stars because this place is tops!

In my case she told me I was "the worst student she had ever worked with,". This was not tied to specific corrections or guidance it was personal and degrading. believe teachers and choreographers should correct technique and behavior without attacking a student's worth. This kind of language creates an unsafe and discouraging environment, especially for younger or more vulnerable dancers. I also found the I found the choreography poorly structured and unclear. Im sharing this so future students and parents can make a better informed decision. Safe to just go to DJD where the teachers are respectful and welcoming, hope that Krysten is not a substitute there.

I have taken salsa classes in the past, and the footing was slightly different. Alex and Dave took the time to explain how the count was different for this style of salsa. Alex really breaks down the steps for you, so even if you're a COMPLETE salsa newbie, as in, never have danced in your life, you will still be okay if you follow her steps and instructions. The size of the class is good, it allows for personal attention/help whenever you need it. Salsa is a stunning dance (if done right), and Alex and Dave are both VERY good-looking individuals, so when they do a dance demonstration, its quite the show. We took 4 classes but it felt a bit rushed, there was a lot of technique to learn and I felt that after the first lesson we were playing catch up. The price for the lessons was fairly inexpensive so I would go back for another class. One thing to note is that you constantly switch partners. If you go without one it's great because you don't get stuck with anyone but when you go as a couple, it's a bit irritating when you don't get to dance together as much.

I grew up not believing I could dance even though I loved moving to the music. For some reason her style is one that really resonates with me and I can pick up some very complicated nuances of the dance quite easily. I've taken other tango classes from other well known studios and something is missing that Maria adds and I some how grasp the concept and can embody it. He teaching is taken very slowly, and a partipant has learned a lot more about moving in dance before they ever learn the basic steps - and I can tell you that's done wonders to my ability to follow a leader (because I can memorize steps well and take over!). I wouldn't say I'm an expert dancer or will ever be looking forward to anything more than feeling like a average person in a social dance situation but that's miles ahead of what I thought I would be capable of. I've been to a handful of schools and instructors in the city for a few different dances over the years, if you're interested in really learning tango this is the instructor for you!

She inspires them with the love of dance and gives them pride in themselves and their craft. She is particular, but this is to our, and our children's benefit. Her standards of costume, makeup and dance are high which always produces a fantastic recital. Fundraising is neccesary in order to keep this school running with extremely inexpensive fees. To have your child in a dance school for only $27 a month is unheard of. If you are looking for a school that is a fun place for your child to learn, gain confidence and possibly jump start a passion, this is the school.

Last night, for the first time in my life I went to go see a ballet. And it wasn't just ANY ballet,…read moreit was the Alberta Ballet's performance of The Nut Cracker. 3 words my friends: OH. MY. GOD. The show was absolutely INCREDIBLE. The sets! The dancers! The music! OH MY! The ballet was accompanied by The Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra and I cannot even begin to describe how superb every single element of the show was. Choreographed by Edmund Stripe, all music composed by Pyotr llyich Tchaikovsky and performed by some of the most talented dancers I have EVER seen on stage, this show is truly one of a kind. Every single dancer who took the stage performed with absolute grace, professionalism and expertise - to the point where they made it seem like dancing on your tip toes or leaping through the air is as simple as breathing. I truly don't have enough words to describe how incredible this show is. If I could recommend you see ONE show this holiday season, I would recommend it be The Nut Cracker performed by The Alberta Ballet. It's only on stage in Calgary until December 26th, so that gives you 6 days to book seats for one of the most awe-inspiring shows you will ever see.
