As a local Santa Barbara wedding DJ, Scott Topper Wedding DJ Productions absolutely loved working at Live Oak Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Goleta. The campus is gorgeous with a warm, welcoming aesthetic and beautiful indoor/outdoor spaces that are perfect for weddings and receptions. Every interaction with the staff was terrific -- friendly, professional, and incredibly supportive -- making this venue a true pleasure to work at and one we highly recommend.

Sunday after Sunday we enjoy the excellent Sunday services at 10 AM and now, on the fourth Sunday of the month, we enjoy swing dancing free starting with a 30 minute lesson and dancing til 8:30 PM.

I first attended Live Oak as a child when it was in Isla Vista, and continued to attend through its move to Goleta. It has always been a very warm, very genuine, very progressive and open minded bunch of people. As a youth, I went to Religious Education classes, which weren't your normal Sunday School classes, but rather a very unbiased overview of the many faiths of the world. No one told me what to believe, and no one told me what not to believe. It was a place where good people would come together for community. Some of my closest friendships (with adults and other kids) were developed here. I participated in pageants, choir, and numerous field trips. When I got into my teen years, I went through the coming of age ceremony where I chose an adult to be my mentor. Since I've been out of high school I haven't attended much, though every time I do I am overcome with a sense of love. There is no guilt about not attending, but rather joy and excitement that I've returned to visit. I figure I could have been raised in a conservative religious and political household, where I was told what to think and was scared into living a good life just to stay away from hell. Instead, I was taught that my opinions mattered, that I could still be a good person and live a meaningful life without having to accept or conform to a certain set of ideas, that all people should be treated equally regardless of their race, religion, gender, sexual orientation or lifestyle. I am so thankful that places like this exist. Live Oak is truly an amazing place with a group of amazing people.

Unitarian-Universalist (UU for short) churches are different from most churches in that they do not give you answers, but encourage you to ask questions and then give you tools and a community to help you find your own answers. Live Oak is a vibrant, close community of art and friendly people. Once a month, Live Oak hosts the SongTree folk music concert series. I should note that this is MY church for the last 20 years.

I came here a little over a year ago from Georgia and didn't know anybody. At Saint Mike's, I found an amazing and energetic mentor and priest in Rev. Scott, an intimate yet vibrant multigenerational worshipping community, and a fountain of God's grace, justice, and love pouring out into the world! Saint Mike's is an adventure to say the least! Each Sunday parishioners respond to the sermon with their concerns, thoughts, and testimonies and are challenged to take the Gospel into the world through a practice called the Mustard Seed. You may hear music from the French monastic community Taize, or Bob Dylan, or Sam Cook, or any number of protest songs from the sixties, as well as the occasional hymn depending on when you walk in, but it is always excellent and led by a mix of students from UCSB and other parishioners as well as Rev. Scott. Outside of Sunday Worship at 10:30 AM, there are a number of outreach programs geared towards the church's mission to serve IV and UCSB. Surfing and Spirituality is probably the most popular program, but there's also Yoga, Zazen and Mindfulness meditation groups, a book club, and more. We also host the Cafe Picasso brunch on Sundays and food pantry for students dealing with food insecurity as well as Showers and Blessings and the Saint Brigids meal program which is geared towards the houseless and economically disadvantaged. We have some room left to grow. We are working on our campus engagement everyday even as we are continuing to expand in number and substance. We want to always be improving our level of support for students, so much of our time and effort has gone into improving those things. We also have a few physical challenges in terms of our facilities that we are working to address. However, families and students will find a safe and inclusive environment to learn and grow spiritually and intellectually.

More commonly referred to as St. Mike's - they have definitely evolved as a church to fit a college community. Mass here on Sundays is only at 10am. And my only wish is that they had more on campus events or reached out more to other students that lived on campus.

It's adorned with beautiful stained glass windows which cast the most breathtaking glow during morning mass. The facilities are immaculately clean and are outfitted for large groups. I've been here for masses, baptisms (including my own), memorial services, and holiday events. All were executed very well. The church also has a parish hall, a Sunday school program, a catechism program, a choir, a youth group, and many other extracurricular events. There's also a K-8 private school, ample parking, and the most beautiful rose garden. You'll even find a Cub Scout Christmas tree stand here during the holiday season. I was personally a part of their junior high youth group, and I was an altar server at the 9:30am Sunday mass for about five years. The programs were well-organized and offered a real sense of community and camaraderie. I always felt welcomed as a member of this church. A good Catholic program overall.

Then I was assigned as Associate Pastor there when Msgr. Steve Downes became Pastor. I loved my years at St. Raphael's, I believe I was there as an Associate for 8 years. I have many great memories of the people there. They are truly a family and so warm and welcoming. I learned how to celebrate Mass in Spanish there and although I made many mistakes the people helped me along and gently corrected me in private. Fr. Downes is an excellent example of a Servant Pastor who worked hard to make sure the parish was well run and the people were served. Some of my fondest memories of Priesthood are of St. Raphael's, even a little meeting that happens 6 days a week in a little room on the north side of the Church building at 6:45 am. I visited there a couple of weeks ago. Jesus is alive and working in that Parish!
