I visited my friend in Norway and we had a great time! While vacationing nearby in a lovely hytte,…read morewe wandered down the mountain road to the Sirdal Hoyfjellshotell in search of sustenance. We were not disappointed.
We were among the few guests to venture out on a storm night. And I believe we were the only guests who walked to the restaurant! The friendly host, who spoke English and Spanish delighted us with information about what food options were available in the dining room.
We ordered some wine, which was typically Norwegian, aka expensive, but it was delightful to sit and relax during some stormy weather. My friend got the salmon, which was a bit disappointing, but, hey, we did not have to cook and we got a night off from dish-doing and clean up!
I opted to dine on the buffet food, which, lucky me, featured komle. Apparently, the restaurant serves this dish every Thursday. These Norwegian dumplings were like a giant gob of the best Thanksgiving stuffing you ever ate. They were dense, hearty, hot, and delicious. I plan to make them in place of stuffing this Thanksgiving. The dumplings were served with sausage, which was kind of basic. It also had a bacon sauce, which was delicious. More vegetables filled out the meal. It seems like no Norwegian meal is complete without some huge boiled potatoes.
The best part was, to the amazement of my Norwegian friend, I was able to communicate with the host in Spanish for the entirety of the meal. If you find yourself in Sirdal, check out the Sirdal Høyfjellshotell restaurant. You have nothing to lose. This was definitely the most memorable meal I had in a 2 week Norwegian vacation!
