Lately it seemed costs were rising & benefits getting trimmed. I was beginning to question whether this was value for money. With the opening of the private lounge at the well-placed grand central branch, the benefits look much more attractive. It's truly a lovely space in which customers can have a coffee, do some business before they catch a train, or even stay for a couple of hours and do their work. It also has a small meeting room that seats around six people which you can book out. Well done NatWest! You had me at the espresso machine, but those tasty treats as well...

The store is pretty average, it's spacious with a larger seating area than most banks which I liked, a great place perhaps to sit down while shopping or passing through the city to relax for a few minutes or do some online banking, if you're a Santander customer like me. I liked how they had their targets on digital screens compared to paper which most other branches of Santander or any other bank for that matter seem to use, it made the whole thing stand out more, and seem more modern. They didn't have any coin processing facilities at the ATM machines, so you'd have to queue up for that, I would have liked more staff on the floor to offer assistance without the need to queue, as the store felt understaffed without it. The bank is nice, with some modern features however and pretty spacious. 3*

The other staff try to get people to use the machines for most queries. There are plently of staff about and do seem friendly enough. If its just a question i would ask at the reception rather then queue up first. Its light and modern interior and is clearly laid out with a large reception desk just in front of the doors. Its a shame there isn't more branches as the banks ofers good deals. The internet banking is great and would try to use this rather then going into the branch itself.

It is quite a decent size, and it has a good number of general machines for standard banking, probably more than average which I liked as well as the generally common facilities of having a small seating area and free wi-fi. They even had a few machines just outside, I presume this means when the bank is closed you can still do some basic banking activities which I like. I have to share the opening hours which are probably some of the best I've ever seen for a bank up north, they're very similar to what Metro Bank have in the South of England. Being open throughout the week between 10 and 8 is fantastic, closing slightly earlier at 6 pm on Sunday's, and being open at the shopping centre's hours (restricted by Sunday Trading laws in the UK) from 11-4 on a Sunday. These opening hours are similar to Halifax, elsewhere in the centre but beat TSB by a mile in terms of offering late openings. The staff in the branch appears to let the store down, and the queuing system to speak to someone could be more efficient, I also feel slightly more cool and modern features such as an emphasis on digital banking and utilising the free space in the bank more, could be an improvement. 3* - Nice HSBC location with good opening hours and good machines for banking activities let down by bad service and a lack of technology.

The branch itself is located slap-bang in the middle of the high street (Carolgate) so there's no immediate parking as it's pedestrianised. They've got self-service facilities and service counters, and it's a fairly busy branch. It's an old building which has retained a little of its original character, but with the features you'd expect of a modern bank. My opinion of HSBC as a company on the whole is very very very poor, but this branch is about as good as it gets for them.
