My plant is gorgeous but our customer service was awful by the young girl in the blue shirt that rang us up today. She was rude, unfriendly and seemed as though we were bothering her by just being rung up. A smile, a hello and a thank you goes a long way, just saying... We had to ask for a bag for our plant because we didn't want dirt getting all over our car. She looked at us like we were aliens for asking for a bag. Girl, what's your deal? I wanted to give this place five stars because of how freaking lovely it is, but man, that customer service never fails to disappoint. Every time & I mean EVERY TIME I've been in here the employees act like they are so far above you to even acknowledge you, let alone offer any help. And usually I just brush off that behavior & carry on with my day, unfortunately the last time I was in there was with my 75yr old father, who by the way was so excited to purchase one of the Whittier Local T-shirts. Unfortunately, I couldn't find any T-shirts in men's sizes, I see employees walking around fixing plants & pretty much doing nothing, I asked for help, they blatantly ignore me. So I see about three employees just hanging out by the register I go up to them say "Excuse me can I get help" about three times before one kid turns around and actually acknowledges me, not before the three other girls look me up and down & walk away like I had absolutely inconvenienced them. Lol At no point did anyone acknowledge my father, & at no point did they offer him any help... how is that okay?!? He ended up purchasing two shirts one for himself & one for me, which everyone loves so I get to retell this story every time someone asks me where I purchased it. This store is super adorable and the product mix is really nice. That being said, it's extremely unaffordable. I understand that the majority of the brands in there are higher end and pricey, but if you price check most items you can find them much cheaper online. I do want to support small local businesses but some of the price differences and markups I've seen when price checking this products isn't justifiable for me as a consumer. For reasons beyond my control, I am not allowed into gift stops and stores that sell trifling things. Urban Outfitters, Ikea, Spencer's Gifts and Things Remembered definitely come to mind. I am especially banned from the Ikea in Costa Mesa, but I'll save that tale for another review. You see--I have this problem with tacky knick knacks that make my skin itchy...so itchy that it pushes me to the point of disrobing and performing a particular motion as if I have a hula hoop around me. Hold a mug that says "#1 Dad"? I kick off the shoes. Open up a funny greeting card with a catch phrase about Kevin Sorbo? Dress shirt gets unbuttoned. Touch the velvety finish of a dogs playing poker tapestry? The pants come off and the gyrating force around my pelvis becomes unstoppable. But this store charges with a battlecry like no other. Local Fixture's front line is strong versus my need to get naked and flanking maneuvers. The cheesiness that typical gift shops often have is a fallacy not found here. While you can't procure a neon pink blow up love seat here, you will find Filson brand here, classic Americana that comes in the form of luggage. Shelves of the singing salmon flopping on wooden plaques? None. Tables are instead arranged with novelty children's books. No "Over the Hill" gag gifts to give to your grandma here. Just, uh, some barber grade products for the hipster beards and leather goods for smartphone fanatics. If it isn't apparent through my ramblings, I deem this shop worth its weight in charm through its instantaneous patine, the endless cornucopia of items and a welcoming atmosphere that could have you loitering for hours. The variety of goods Local Fixture sell did have me questioning just what kind of store it should be classified as. How can you call this place a mere gift shop when it resonates sophistication balanced with not taking itself too seriously? The answer came from a tall handsome Asian man that spoke with a youthful yet all knowing tone. I'm talking 90s Russell Wong here. I was whisked away by his banter of what exactly "dry goods" are and their rich history amongst Medieval marketplaces and Tunisian arcades. His posture and sagacious voice were quite convincing. Last year I went through a breakup and my friend and I met up so she could cheer me up and get my mind off it and then she surprised me with a Drake air freshener. It was a dead-on cartoon drawing of Drake's smiling face and it brought so much joy to my life at that time. I asked her where she got it and she said some secret store in Uptown Whittier she can't tell me about. Well I done found it and I'm telling EVERYONE about it so they can bring unexpected joy to their loved one too! Local FIxture is in Uptown Whittier and is the best gift/novelty shop that's got everything awesome, cute, comedic, unicorny, counter and pop culture related to brighten your day. The stores layout is different in that it's not a chain store and they have a little bit of everything in there from sunglasses and other accessories to bath and aromatherapy dealys to crass cards, pins, patches and books that aren't at your local Target or mall chain. If you're in the area or need a unique gift or greeting card then Local Fixture is where you will find it. I bought a Walter Mercado birthday card from there, another Drake air freshener, a pin with an inspirational quote from Frida Kahlo and a laser cut beer opener. It's such a cool store and I find it hard to walkout without getting something for myself or someone else, even if it's months from now (I got a few birthday cards for specific people). It looks a little like Anthropolgie in there but with an ethnic twist to it. It's probably one of my favorite places in Whittier other than Pizza Mania. read more

I absolutely love this place! I found it after going to a Yelp Elite event a few years back. It also made me fall a bit for Uptown Whittier but that's another story. It wasn't until I needed to find Christmas gifts for an eccentric, sarcastic girl recently that I remembered this place. It was a great choice. Local Fixture has a wonderful hipster feel without the manufactured pretentiousness usually linked with hipster culture (think Urban Outfitters). Every thing has character, from the displays to the people working here. That's what makes this place wonderful. You can spend 20 - 30 minutes just wandering around the store and each inspection would bring up a fascinating person in your life you could gift. The thing that really sealed the deal for me was as I finished purchasing my gifts they asked if I wanted the items gift wrapped. I was happily surprised and said, "Sure!" They wrapped the **** out of my gifts! Using gold wrapping paper and red ribbon I was blown away by the beauty and quality of their work. So much so I returned the next day to ask if they could wrap some gifts I bought from a different store. I loved the aesthetics of their wrapping paper and wanted it for everything. They were happy to oblige and I even got to have an interesting conversation with the workers about how they became so skillful and what they thought of the area. It was great. All in all I would gladly return here again for both the range in merchandise and the company of the people. The children's section was cute with clothes and "ethnic" (not sure how I feel about that) children's books. The plants they sell were beautiful. They do have some unique items for gift giving. Negatives: it is totally apparent they push a liberal/socialist agenda. Liberal politician's books displayed, the sign at the entrance said "You MUST santize your hands upon entry" , the real most concerning thing I saw were these candles of celebrities' faces on a popular image of Jesus. I took it as mockery of the Christian faith and the idolatry of Hollywood Celebrities. No wonder they were in the clearance section. Sad. I wont be buying anything there. read more

The other half even purchased a great Bellroy wallet he had been eying online, but hadn't had the time to go see the selection in person at the department stores. Although the store is great, and there are many interesting, and unique pieces available, I felt as though I was rushed to make my selection. I was trying to get some information over my phone, for some purchases, but I was approached a total of four times asking if I was finding everything, and if I needed any assistance. I told him I was OK, and I went on shopping and doing my research over the phone, which included calling my sister, regarding a gift. The fifth time that I was approached, and getting some answers from my sister, Another sales person approached me to let me know that they would be closing in five minutes. I guess all the while they were trying to rush me, perhaps thinking that I was just having a conversation on the phone. I would've made more purchases, but again, I felt it so I was rushed out. There needs to be a better way of letting customers know or reminding customers about closing. Perhaps an announcement to all customers, instead of going up to them time after time, asking them if they need assistance. I have always loved browsing all of the cute items Local Fixtures carries. Anytime I need a cute gift, instead of buying something on etsy, I shop local and buy something from here. I love all of the wedding and newly wed gifts. You can find a gift for almost anyone here. I was ecstatic to find out that they were opening a coffee shop that serves stumptown. I've been here almost every week since they have opened, I just love their almond milk iced latte. Seriously, the best I've ever had (and I've had my fair share of iced lattes). My husband loves their nitro cold brew but it keeps him up all night (which I guess is the point of a nitro cold brew). The pastries are cute to look at and taste great too. This place is great! Wonderful staff, who are friendly and helpful. They have a nice selection of unique gifts and products. It's not cheap, but the quality is good, and considering it's a small business in the pricy area of Uptown Whittier, this is to be expected. I tried their donuts and tea today and they were both good. Actually, the staff were very kind, and made me another tea free of charge when I mentioned I wasn't a fan of the cream in it. I wasn't expecting that at all, and was very happy they offered. As for the donuts, they're definitely on the pricy side; a mini donut is $2.50! It's good, but I wouldn't say it's so amazing that it warrants that price tag. As a poor college student, it's definitely not something I'll be indulging in again! But I was curious, so I tried them. It definitely has some hints of the store, Anthropologie, but without the large price tags. It's a large space with loads of gift ideas. The home cook can get unique cookbooks, the expectant mommy can get some baby clothes, the gentleman in your life can try out some skin care, the little kid in your life can get some books or stuffed animals; yup, there's something for everybody! My sister and I wondered in one day after eating sushi next door and I immediately fell in love with the place! They have the cutest things from candles to socks to books and cards that you won't find anywhere else. A few weeks later, as the awesome procrastinator that I am, I found myself back here because I was on my way to one of my sorority sister's baby shower. Local fixture is not a store but an experience. The two owners ( brothers) are residents of Whittier who wanted to bring something unique to this town, and they succeeded: a store with amenities. You have your choice of drinking beer or coffee as you peruse the inventory. This is the type of store to visit when you have plenty of time because the items it carries are designed to stimulate your senses. I bought two great smelling perfumes and then played three rounds of free pool (won one game and lost two). I highly recommend this store, and I support it for its contribution to the Whittier community. read more
