During that trip, we must have gone to a Norkys at least 10 times - not only in Lima, but when we went north as well (forget about ceviche on the beach...he wanted Norkey's). 3 years have passed and I am in Santiago shopping for a present for my partner's birthday when I see a familiar sign - it's Norky's and they have come to Chile!! What a perfect present -- his favorite meal prepared by a restaurant he knows from back home. The entrance on San Antonio is fairly tiny (if you're not looking you can miss it as you walk past), but as I made my way down the stairs, to my surprise, there was a large underground restaurant with flat screen TVs and an open kitchen. I ordered him his favorite 1/4 of pollo a la brasa served with french fries and a peruvian salad (prices are similar to Aji Seco) and I sat in a comfy waiting area until my order was promptly ready. The chicken was just as good as it is in Peru. If you have a hankering for bbq chicken I definitely recommend trying Norky's. They also offer delivery and takeout.

Why is this important?? Well, I am a vegetarian and although there are 2 vegetarian options on the standard menu...I am not a big fan of any of them. So, through a *very* arduos trial and error process, I found my perfect vegetarian Peruvian sanguche. The only problem is, because the Merced branch is always packed the cooks and waiters never let me create my own sandwich. Meanwhile, San Antonio has empty tables and ready to fill them with my "special" order. A tip for everyone: I highly recommend adding the salsas to your sandwich, that is what gives it the knock-out taste! My favorite is the olive sauce (aceituna), if you want a stronger taste you can add garlic (ajo) and if you like spicy, I recommend the "aji amarillo" (somewhat spicy) or "rocoto" (really spicy). However, if vegetarian isn't your thing, there are tons of options such as the traditional "chicharrón" (fried pork) or "lechon" (suckling, roasted pig). You can almost never go wrong with these delicious sandwiches served on warm freshly baked bread.

They have two floors, personally I find the second floor way more appealing. On the first floor you have to deal with people coming in and out the entrance as opposed to the second floor which is much quieter. Also on a cold day it really sucks to have sporadic drafts of cold air while enjoying their dinner. At Donde Guido they serve the traditional Peruvian pisco sour which is always a treat. Their service is usually really attentive. I wouldn't recommend their ceviche, it's not bad but I would say it's the freshest I've tried. I always enjoy the pasta dishes which is a fusion of Chinese and Peruvian food.

Also, they have a delicious lucuma cake that makes my mouth water just thinking about it - their frosting is my favorite part of the cake and I usually eat it by the finger-full. However, my all time favorite is their chocolate cake (in fact, after the Chile-Brazil game, I walked over and picked one up for myself to drown my sorrows -- it is that good!). The cake itself is moist and the chocolate mousse in the middle gives it the perfect chocolatey texture and taste to satisfy even the most passionate chocolate lover.
