I'll admit. It's not the best taco place in Denver in any way and yet I at least got a decent service from one of the guys at the bar where my to-go experience was a good one. Yesterday wasn't my first occasion at Locales. A year or so ago, I was here on their rooftop (or should I call it "second floor open deck) where under a beautiful sky, I enjoyed the atmosphere where a blender bike was set that made sample margaritas for people). It sure was a beautiful night. Yesterday's weather was nice also so when we went upstairs to enjoy the view for a brief moment we were able to see the same beautiful sky with some pink mixed in it. Another stunning sunset indeed. For this view, it may not be a bad place to be at. Food wise, my two fish tacos tasted good. The fish wasn't noticeably plenty and yet the overall taste of both (one was grilled and the other was deep-fried) was good with lots if flavors; the portions,however, were a bit small. $6 for each. They aren't/weren't in the permanent menu. I saw them on a temporary menu posted at the bar register. Not sure how long they will serve them. The place is quite spacious. The first floor is divided into three sections: the main one where the bar is located, second one is with some pool tables and the third one has a foosball machine. And like I said in the beginning, second floor (as long as the weather permits) is where you should be to enjoy the view especially at dusk. read more

Had dinner across the street and stopped in for a drink. Great space, lots of tv's for sports viewing and bar activities but let's talk about what's important here.... TEQUILA!!! They have a HUGE selection of all the things tequila so if you're an enthusiast this is your place. TLDR: Hispanics don't go here! Plenty of other spots more deserving. First day I went, took a while to get served but enjoyed the food. I asked the bartender if he knew how to dress coronas, he said yes. I received a glass that was 1/2 foam. I didn't complain, just didn't drink it and still tipped generously. Second day I went, the same bartender recalled me not wanting his drink-- he demanded I pull my ID out my wallet when ordering food AND no drinks. I pulled it out, and he snatched it out my hand. I snatched it back and walked out, called him weird for doing that. Mid-AF. Went here on an errand walk today and I have never missed Park Avenue Tavern more. Getting served by a dude with literal corded headphones in his ears? Closing out was fun considering I (the patron) had AirPods in....And then the (assumptive) bar manager helicoptering behind, but not interacting verbally...only with a particular group. Maybe I have a higher expectation of bar staff bc the places I normally frequent have staff who are genuinely friendly and happy to be there? (Like Park Tav used to be) Probably not gonna be back unless this is the only bar open during a snow storm and I'm stranded 10 feet away. The food is pretty terrible. So, I wouldn't recommend coming here to eat. My friends got a taco and said it was horrible. I got cheese quesadilla and it wasn't good, either. It was the wimpiest, thinnest quesadilla ever. I don't know why it would be hard for anyone to make Mexican food. We can make this type of stuff better at home. Service - prompt, but not charming and I guess the bartender had just been having a cigarette outside, because when he came over and exhaled, the cigarette smoke came out. Ugh. That's so 1970. The ambience? None. I live in this neighborhood, and when I saw the signs go up a few months ago, I groaned. There are some very good taco places within walking distance. Good atmosphere. But can we all figure out why bartenders make personal comments to their customers about tipping? Pouring a beer for a customer a few times doesn't mean you need a tip every time. The struggle is real at times. But never once did I tell a customer to their face they need to tip me for pouring a modelo. Laughable. Since opening, the food indeed has gotten way better! We went and got the Birria tacos and the tuna tostada appetizer. The servings are small so keep that in mind when ordering, but the flavors are jam packed. The consume paired perfectly and the birria was delicious! The tuna tostada was small and mighty. It's a local spot that isn't very busy and sometimes you have to flag a waiter down. I loved the flavor but the prices have gone up. So I guess it's the price you pay for increasing quality. DO NOT GO if you are queer or POC. During Pride weekend, my friends and I were violently harassed by a man at this bar who screamed homophobic and racist slurs, threatened us, and yelled "I'm going to do a hate crime." When we reported it to management, they were completely unhelpful, dismissive, and took no action. They told us that they had no cameras, and were defensive and unwilling to help or even be empathetic to the situation. First time customer while traveling in the area. I was skeptical due to star ratings but was assured by a local that they had worked out the kinks since opening and hired a new chef. The biggest bonus of this business is the atmosphere. The bar was busy and comfortable. Bartenders attentive and super friendly. This would be a great place to come with a group of friends to play pool and games and hang out together. Great location. We tried a little bit of everything starting with the Locales Burrito which will assure you will not leave hungry. Comes with a choice of meat and the ground beef was very tasty. We also tried two street tacos, which by the way, are supposed to be small, that's why they're called street tacos. Several choices. They could have used a little more spice but they hit the spot nicely for the smaller appetite or big appetite with more choices! The chips come with a choice of three salsas. The Mango salsa with jalapeño has the perfect kick and was my favorite. Lastly, we tried the wings. I like my wings extra crispy with sauce on the side. These wings were delicious with a thin coating and perfect crisp. We had the bacon jalapeño jam on the side. It was sweet and tasty. Not too spicy and complemented the wings for a unique change from traditional buffalo wings. All and all this is a fun joint with good food! read more

Whoever the red head gal is, she could use a major attitude adjustment. I asked if a table could be bussed and she told me "we'll be there in just a minute". Then proceeds to clean a table on the bar side, check her cell phone, sip some water, then grab her bag and leave. Then I asked one of the guys at the bar and he immediately cleared the table. I have NEVER in my life left a review on a business. However, after half a dozen visits to Locales, I am compelled to say: the food is AWFUL. Truly, eat before coming. It's not worth it. I have had tacos, a chipotle chicken salad, jalapeno poppers, a quesadilla, and nachos and they were all truly so flavorless, drenched in grease, had terrible MOUTH TEXTURE, and just genuinely so so so bad. I wanted so badly to like the food here because the vibes are great, the drink menu is solid, the servers and bar tenders are all wonderful, friendly people, and I love the full calendar of events - all the makings of a great neighborhood spot! I'm honestly easy to please, I like almost any kind of food - fancy food, bar food, asian, mexican. And yet Locales can't even manage a palatable $4 taco. So, to the owner and/or GM of Locales, I emphatically beg you - end it. End it now. Unless you do a complete overhaul, I will never eat your food again. Please, just STOP offering food. Instead, consider this business proposal: Reduce to an appetizer-only menu and allow outside food to be brought in. You are located next to a plethora of actually incredible mom-and-pop restaurants (and Ideal Market's hot bar). Embody the name LOCALES and become a hub for local eats. Every dish was so spicy that nobody at our table could enjoy it--and we're not faint hearted about spice. Service was indifferent; it was difficult to get the bartender's attention even when they weren't particularly crowded. Atmosphere is stark and cold. I don't know where to start. So I'll start with the good: location, staff (the two people we met), the hot sauces, the cleanliness , and the size of the restaurant. The bad...was pretty much everything else. This isn't a cheap or affordable place. Happy hour drinks average in the teens. I've only lived in the city a few years, and I've seen this restaurant change twice. I feel like it's just cursed. It can't seem to have a good vibe. From the happy hour being a a chip based system... you have to bring it back if it's too close to happy hour being over) whilst still within the happy hour period). The queso blanco... was certainly from a can. Lukewarm and microwaved. My friend and I decided that after the premixed margarita with tons of ice, and the tortilla chips from a bag - it wasn't worth ordering more. Locales is a great neighborhood bar that has only gotten better since opening. The food is in a *much* better place since launch, with my favorites being the barbacoa tacos and their new burger (only $11 and comes with a beer on Mondays, absolutely killer deal). I also absolutely love all of the local hot sauces they have, you're sure to find something you like. The staff has been fantastic as well. Caley has been my bartender for the majority of the times I've been, and she's such a pro. No matter how hectic or busy things get, she seems to handle it all so well. You'll be lucky to have her. Whether it's trivia or a pool tournament, Locales has hosted a bunch of events that have helped me meet new people in the neighborhood and for that I'm very grateful. The drinks are ok, but the food lacks flavor and is overpriced. The service was just ok. Straight from the bag chips, dry and flavorless filling in the tacos, and tortillas from a bag that need to be warmed. This is not a restaurant (place your order at the bar and pick it up yourself style), just a bar that happens to serve expensive white people 'Mexican food'. They are advertising an upcoming Día de los Muertos celebration w/ face painting. This spiritual holiday is not a drinking day, nor should it be used to make a profit when the historical significance is not understood-especially when there is no known connection to actual Mexican heritage. White people have a record of exploiting other cultures for profit and and entertainment. Using the premise of this spiritual holiday as a costume/face painting day or day drinking party takes the meaning out of the day and moves it in another direction...cultural appropriation. read more

The curse of this building continues. I don't expect this restaurant to stay open long if the food remains as horrible as it is. Tacos are the size of your palm, minimum of $5 and dry, flavorless and depressing to look at. The shrimp taco is a whopping $7 and comes with three mini shrimp. Seriously? The restaurant is essentially self service with paper cafeteria style plates that you have to bus yourself. Yikes! Came here with my friend from out to town to try out for the first time together. The tacos were straight up cafeteria material. They lacked flavor, proper temperature, and they were dry. And our chips were stale! How do you mess up chips and dip!? It was like eating an expensive Lunchable. There's no service either, you pick your food up from the bar. Ordered a regular margarita and it was far too much sweet/sour. There's also an automatic "service" charge for service you don't even get.
