The Art Center is a worthwhile visit. The annual open show (a juried show that attracts high-quality work) and the annual camera club photo show (also judged professionally) are perennial local favorites in the galleries. The galleries are modest in size (this isn't the Knoxville Museum of Art, whose huge spaces seem like they were for large-scale works) and well-lighted. Admission is free, but the art center is a community nonprofit that always appreciates donations. The Art Center is easy for Oak Ridge visitors (and even residents) to overlook because it's not on a major street. It's not far away though -- in fact, it's only a short walk from sites like the American Museum of Science and Energy, the Oak Ridge Civic Center, and the Peace Bell (or you can drive, which is what most folks do). The class I was in had half if not more with broken vases. Or cracks so large that it was about to break off. I noticed the people with the largest cracks had thinner vases. (Again I understand) there is a huge parking area next to the building. Maybe have food trucks and places to sit and eat/drink while you wait. The owner is great and very friendly.

It's not just an art gallery, but an actual art co op, so the people you are buying art from art actually the artists (so be careful what you say!). They not only have paintings, but lots of photography, sculptures (one artist seems to have a particularly odd penchant for vegetable steamers), jewelry, and clothing. The ceramics and jewelry were pretty reasonably priced. Some of the artwork was reasonable, and some both my husband and I both agreed was waaaay overpriced. I imagine since the artists determine the price for their own artwork. There was one painting which I'm now wishing I had bought. Maybe if we have a little extra money next month I'll call and see if it's still there. In any case, we did buy a ceramic vase, which we are now housing our lucky bamboo. If you walk to the top of the hill where the fort is you can see great views of Kingston. This spot is situated on the confluence of the Clinch and Tennessee rivers. If you wish to visit the museum be aware of the opening hours. There are plans in the works to turn it into a state park instead of a city park. As far as history goes part of the recreation of the structures are incomplete. But with funding from the state I am sure this will not last for long.
