Visiting Venice for a short time, it was disheartening to spend our limited time and money on this meal. Initially, we were not seated inside, though people were inside when we left. However, their indoor area only had a small portable AC, so it wouldn't have been much better. During the hot summer afternoon, the outdoor patio was unbearable, despite the umbrellas. As the sun shifted, I felt like I was boiling. The service was slow but not terrible. I ordered the lasagna, which was one of the worst I've had, and I've had my share of bad lasagna. It was mushy and not to my taste. My partner's spaghetti carbonara tasted overwhelmingly of pepper. The fried guanciale slices were the highlight, but the overcooked egg resembled scrambled eggs, mixed with powdered pepper flavor. It was inedible for us. Perhaps this is a traditional Venice way of cooking but I did not like it. My Prosecco was good, but they serve Pepsi instead of Coke, which wasn't great either. Unfortunately, I wouldn't return.

La Vegana is a small, unassuming restaurant and shop in a quiet neighborhood. There are a few tables for eating in but it appears to me that much of their business is take away and selling vegan grocery items. The menu for the day is written out on a chalk board. We were able to decipher it with no problem but if your Italian is marginal the woman at the counter spoke excellent English and was helpful in making our selections. I ordered ravioli spinaci. It was very good. I ate vegan ravioli three times while in Italy, once when we made it ourselves in a cooking class in Como, then at an upscale vegan restaurant in Venezia, and finally here at La Vegana. The ravioli at La Vegana was not as fancy as at the restaurant in Venezia -- but the taste was just as good. The ravioli we made ourselves was also good -- but we're just beginners when it comes to making pasta. My traveling companions report that they also enjoyed there selections. If you are a vegan and looking for good vegan food in Ferrara, I recommend La Vegana. They open at 11:00am and close at 9:00pm. It is worth seeking out.

There is a large outdoor area where you can sit and watch the sunset after an amazing meal. The restaurant itself is very beautifully decorated with white linen tablecloths. That being said it is not necessary to get all dressed up although it would be appropriate to do so if one wished. You may arrive by car or by boat as there are many slips along the side of the property. The food was fresh and well prepared. There were 12 of us and they were able to deliver excellent service for us all. We ordered a variety of food, from the octopus appetizer to salads, soups, whole grilled fish and even pork chops. All of the food was prepared perfectly. The menu is extensive so there will be something for everyone, with an especially large selection of fish and meat entrees and of course several pasta dishes to choose from.
