My son George (age 12) just loves it here! At Walt Whitman!…read moreWe stayed in a more local camp last year (Covid and last minute with one of his best friends) in sleepaway. This was a compromise as George went with a best friend new to sleepaway who needed a last minute spot. George got back and said never again I have to go back to Walt Whitman - nothing compares! I called Jed and Carolyn right away and explained George's desire! He and the bestie are now going to Walt Whitman for this summer and are super excited! Just great people, great sports, great friends, great counsler a, great food, perfect accommodations a! Just everything is 5 And beyond! The level of service is just beyond compare! Love love love! Jed, Carolyn, Stephanie, Matt and all of the counselors are just the best!!!

I commend the camp for having everything from soccer to art to sing-alongs to sailing. I wish I had been more confident at the time I was there because I spent most of my time feeling like an outsider. I was teased because I had eczema. I was teased because I was different--I attended public school and came from a middle class family. I didn't have the latest and greatest clothing or sports equipment. My last summer there was the worst. I was ostracized by my bunkmates and routinely left behind. Counselors didn't seem to notice but then I was the quiet type and too embarrassed to speak up about what was happening to me. I hope things are different now and I hope counselors are trained to instill kindness and caring in all campers and to address things when they happen instead of laughing it off or encouraging it.

Liked the place until the managers tried to rip me off on a refund for the canceled COVID summer…read more They lied about the camp's financial situation in an effort to get concessions from parents. The camps are owed by a family-run real estate holding company with millions of dollars in assets.

We were one of the original Family Campers and stayed on for 7 years till our son went to college…read more We still stay in touch with our fellow campmates as well as Deb and Eric, the camp directors. Akeela was one of the more important things we did for our son and ourselves. The first years, we all moved pretty close together up there, and we had to gently pressure our boy to participate. But after a few years, he became more and more independent. Durning the last 2 or 3 years, we hardly saw him. He made friends there and began a life on his own without our constant participation. The staff at Akeela is truly impressive. THEY GET IT! The directors are in this for the love of camp and the kids and that passion is manifest in everyone on the grounds. The camp is safe and supervised allowing us some badly needed time for ourselves. There is a parent discussion group everyday that was my favorite part of the week. It was deeply moving to be in a circle of other parents who share our experience. There is no need to be concerned about what your qualifying camper does or doesn't do. Everyone understands and there is overwhelming support into which we could relax. And I LOVED not cooking, shopping, or cleaning for a week. As you see, I have no hesitancy recommending Akeela. If you are thinking of sending your camper on their own, but want to check it out first, and give them a jump start, it's a no brainer. Many of the families did both. Most, I think. Their kids started going to the regular kid's session, and everyone came to the family camp. I can't speak directly to the regular sessions, except to say that the overwhelming response from the kids that did attend was that they loved it.
