After 51mins she is told "sorry, we are too busy, we will work on your tyre tomorrow." Bus home. She calls the next day at 1530hrs. The "only" tyre they have in stock is £161 or they can get a cheaper one tomorrow for £101! Really? For a Corsa? Anyway, in tears she accepts. Bus home. I pick it up today, but while waiting heard another customer conned as "they only stock the premium expensive tyres & cheaper ones to order!" In my opinion they are stealing from the vulnerable & will be taking the matter further with Kwik-Fit & BBC Watchdog if I can. Rant over...

The new facility is well laid out and the waiting areas is clean, tidy, warm and a pleasant place to be. Now for the review... driving north from Devon I noticed that my brakes weren't quite behaving as they should... with my MOT coming up soon I though it best to nip this in the bud. I booked myself an appointment for Saturday (online - really quick and easy to do) to get a free brake inspection fully expecting to have to shell out for at the very least some new pads, if not discs as well. As this branch of Kwik-fit turned out to be hideously busy on Saturday afternoon I received a phone call mid-morning advising me of this and asking if it would be ok to shift my appointment to the following day - a bit cheeky maybe, but in my books it is always better to be upfront about this sort of thing! The change of appointment wasn't a problem at all so I dropped my car off and went for a wander to kill some time... 30 minutes later I recived a phone call... the car was ready and there was nothing to pay... it turned out that my brakes were just caked in mud (the joys of living down a rutted, muddy lane) and had been cleaned up and have a good deal of life left in them. I have to admit that initially I was a bit sceptical about the offer of a free brake inspection as I suspected that I would be told that I needed new this, and new that, regardless of the state of things so it was a very welcome surprise! All in all a very good customer experience!

So, he swung his car into the nearest mechanic and went on his way. They phoned him once, saying that the brakes needed this that and the other thing, and oh did he want a full service while he was there? He agreed, and away they went. When we picked up the car we were greeted by the manager who mentioned that they'd had to jump the car to get it started. They what? He said that there was an issue with the alternator. There was? Since when? He reported that the battery wasn't charging properly because of this and the car might not turn on again without a jump. What??? When my guy dropped his car off, the only issue was with the brakes. All of a sudden it's being reported that there is a major electrical fault which, by the way, is going to cost about £250 to fix. We had places to be and were confident that there couldn't really be a problem because we'd had absolutely no problems with the alternator before taking it to Kwik Fit, so we took the car and headed on our way. Five minutes later the car started ticking, then all of the lights on the dashboard went off. We pulled the car over to check it out, turned it off, and were never able to turn it back on. We have since been told that the alternator really can go at any time. It's a tough one though, because mechanics have a bad reputation and as such it is very hard not to wonder at the amazing timing of the whole thing. The alternator was perfectly fine and the battery light was off before taking it in. Upon picking it up, the whole thing's screwed and needs an overhaul? What? Beyond that, under the assumption that this was indeed a problem from the start, the question put to us by the roadside assistance guy was - why on earth did they do all of the fiddly little additions to the service, and not even mention the alternator until we arrived to pick up the car? We were told that this should absolutely have been dealt with before anything else. So, the car has now been taken to a different mechanic who is miles away, but our view is that anyone is better than Kwik Fit.
