Lofty Pursuits opened in 1993 as a small skill toy store. Skill toys are toys you play with and don't play with you. It's the difference between a video game and a yo-yo. It started with a small solid line of Kites, Darts, Yo-Yos and Juggling equipment. Now they have a place can watch them making candy and ice cream shop with fun flavors such as Java jive and Pirates Plunder. Vegan icecream and toppings? Yes!! They have those , too. If you are a disc golf fan they even have 3 walls filed with discs and disc accessories. Nostalgic games and even Tallopoly Tallahassee Monopoloy. this is a really cute kitty spot to get breakfast or lunch. I did expect it to be a little bit more of a candy store than diner. I sat at the soda counter and ordered strawberry pancakes with bacon, and I tried their root beer flight. Turns out they didn't have all of the root beers because one was discontinued or unable to be sent to them any longer so one of my root beers was an orange soda. I liked the opportunity to try these sodas on tap and not commit to one. That's a really fun idea. Pancakes were fluffy and delicious. The bacon was good and I love strawberry pancakes so I'm a big fan when that's on the menu. I really didn't spend a lot of time there, but everyone was friendly and courteous and I didn't have to wait too long for anything from being greeted when I got there to being served. Wanted a diner-like experience and we certainly got that at this establishment. I ordered the grit bowl with a fried egg and turkey bacon. My husband ordered the pastrami and eggs (to eat while dining in), and the corned beef hash meal to go. This place is such a gem in Tallahassee. My toddler had been asking for "blue ice cream" the last couple of days and so we made an impromptu visit on a random Thursday afternoon because I was pretty confident they would have it. They did! It's called the "Smurf," and it's a blue raspberry with marshmallows. I allowed my son to sample it and he enjoyed. I also purchased him a "Nano Scoop" of it. Got the citrus sampler and Alien in pear flavored image candies as well as the Altoid sours recreation of tangerine and citrus. Perhaps it was expensive with added shipping because the total for 4 candies was about $52 but I won't hesitate to reorder once I'm out. I wasn't really sure about pear flavored candy, but that turned out to be my favorite. It doesn't really taste like pear, but there was a good amount of citric acid added that made it super addicting. The Altoid recreations were also a pretty faithful reproduction. The sour powder on top was puckering and they also managed to strip the skin off the roof of my mouth. Exactly what I look for in an Altoid sour. My nostalgia for candy stems from the early 80s when an old widower at church (yes, the Antichrist was once forced to attend a Christian church) would hand out artisanal candies purchased from a long-since-shuttered candy store. Candy making, alas, is a dying art, as most consumers seem content with cheap, mass-produced garbage, so artisanal candy has become an increasingly rare treat for me. Imagine my delight, then, when I stumbled upon a YouTube channel called Lofty Pursuits and observed a kindly, heavyset gentleman making candy from scratch and selling it online. I knew right then that I needed some of his candy. Lofty Pursuits is an old-fashioned brick-and-mortar soda fountain/restaurant/ice cream parlor/candy store located in Tallahassee, Florida. Thanks largely to their popular YouTube videos, they have become best known for candy, though that's only a small part of their business model. Judging by the photos I've seen on Yelp, I can tell they are equally adroit at making ice creams and churning out ginormous breakfast platters. I wish San Antonio had a place such as this, but until that day arrives, I must settle for their myriad candy confections, the only shippable items from their store. For my first order, I chose 2.75-ounce bagged portions of "Chocolate-Covered Strawberry," "Citrus Mix Image," and "Rhymes with Orange*" candies. All three varieties are outstanding. The chocolate-covered strawberry candies taste of real strawberries and chocolate, the citrus image candies taste of fresh citrus zests (orange, lemon, and lime), and the "Rhymes with Orange" drop candies taste like mandarin orange slices in candy form. I gained an appreciation for all three because I saw the owner make these candies from scratch on YouTube. I loved watching him stir the food colorings into the molten candy and then feed the semi-soft mixture through a vintage 19th-century candy press. Candy making is an arcane science bordering on alchemy, and this fellow is a true alchemist. At this point, you're probably wondering why I'm awarding four stars and not five. Well, I spent over $20, including tax and shipping, on three small bags of candy, which seems a bit steep despite the quality of the product. Also, the candy arrived nearly a month after I ordered it. I understand that Lofty Pursuits is a small operation and that their YouTube popularity has increased demand, but the wait did annoy me a bit. I'm an ugly American and I demand instant gratification. Despite my issues with the price and shipping speed, I look forward to ordering more candies from Lofty Pursuits. They are constantly experimenting with new flavors, including several sour drop candies that intrigue me, so I doubt I will ever grow bored with their offerings. If you live in Tallahassee, then why aren't you there right now stuffing your esophagus full of ice cream? *Side note: the "Rhymes with Orange" candy is a reference to musician/poet Tom Lehrer who once penned a poem that included a word that rhymed with "orange," a feat once deemed impossible. The poem is as follows: "Eating an orange While making love Makes for bizarre enj- oyment thereof." The poem works only if you are familiar with the way East Coast freaks pronounce the word "orange" (rnd/). The "rhyme," as it were, is admittedly a bit of a cheat, but I am including it here for reference and because I am exceptionally learned and pedantic. read more

So - this place looked intriguing. When we arrived it was intriguing. There is a full breakfast and sandwich menu all day. They also have an ice cream bar with many flavors. They sell a wide variety of unique items from disc golf items to candies and various games. The decor is also very eclectic - I can't say I've even been in a place quite like this. The young lady who helped us was very pleasant and friendly. We opted for omelettes. My wife had the Brantly which was Swiss cheese, sausage, bacon and bell peppers. I had the 'Spicy' which was Pepper Jack, sausage, jalapeños and green peppers. So - they were hot and very fresh. They were OK. I had to ask if they mixed mine up because there was zero 'spicy' flavor to it. They apologized and took it back to make a new one. The staff came back and said they had done it correctly the first one but were preparing a new one. This one also had zero spice to it. I tried a bite of my wife's and honestly could not taste the difference. Not a bad omelette - just not spicy. Would we go back? If we were in the area and wanted breakfast or ice cream - maybe. Is it a place we would intentionally plan to return to? Probably not. Again - not bad, just nothing remarkable (except for the decor). read more

We went to their website and ordered and paid for a meat omelette, a corned beef hash and eggs entree, a biscuit, and hash browns. It told us when to go to lofty, but e wanted to get there early. Glad we did as the meal was ready early. Called them from the car and they brought the food right to the trunk. When we got home, everything was still hot. And all was very tasty!
