We decided to give Lola a try on our day trip to Ponce located in the Ponce Plaza Hotel and Casino. They were not busy on a Wednesday afternoon, with only a few tables occupied. I really enjoyed the dark atmosphere and spacious seating. Our server was also very kind, asking about our trip to Puerto Rico and giving us recommendations. We ordered four appetizers because we weren't in the mood for the entrees on the menu and it was a great strategy. We ordered the Aranitas De Salmon Sashimi, Tuna Tartar Taquitos, Croquetas De Risotto, and Escargots Cubierto De Filo. My personal ranking from favorite to least favorite was the sashimi, croquettes, tuna taquito, and escargot pastry. The sashimi paired really well with the light, airy, and crunchy plantains and the mango really elicits the freshness of the dish. The Croquettes were crunchy on the outside and cheesy and sweet in the inside, and the entirity was creamy and melted in my mouth. The tuna taquito was also sweet - the tuna tasted really fresh but the sauce kind of reminded me of teriyaki or honey barbeque which I don't mind. The pastry to me tasted on the plain side but the escargot was very buttery and flavorful. We also tried the Creme Brulee De Pistachio. It was a small size which is fine after we were full from the appetizers. It was really cream, sweet, crunchy, and the pistachio flavor punched through. Wowza. Definitely the best meal I had in Puerto Rico, and quite potentially one of the best meals I've had in my life. Salmon sashimi on the plaintain chip was a good appetizer, although I do think that the plantain was a bit large and overshadowed the fish. But the tuna tartar taquitos were out of this world! So flavorful that my husband and I were fighting over who would get the last one. Had the grilled salmon as a main dish, and although the menu didn't quite sell me on the cucumber broth the fish was sitting in, I have to say that it tasted absurdly delicious. The crispy taro cake was a perfect texture complement to the dish. Our server was fantastic, and recommended several of the dishes that we ordered. When debating dessert he insisted that the corn cake was the best they had. I wasn't really sold with the menu description again, but holy smokes, this thing was excellent. Great place! Probably shouldn't have dressed more formally, but I couldn't care less while being on an island ‍ Place : situated in a hotel, this place is super nice. After eating locally at shacks for the past few days, an upscale restaurant was nice. The vibe is chill, and they're playing good sober music. I loved the layout of the restaurant. Food : we got the ahi tuna appetizer with sesame biscuits which was just amazing! Super juicy, and the perfect balance of tartness and sweetness. I got the Chicken stuffed with Parmesan, which was probably a poor choice of food. It wasn't too bad, but I guess I wasn't in the mood for Italian. The chicken was moist, and well cooked. Me and my husband wanted to start the night at Lola's. After reading the reviews we knew drinks were good and food was ok so we went to grab drinks and maybe some appetizers. Our server Ruth helped us with drinks - our Spanish was enough for her to understand us and her English was enough for us to understand her. Beside the communication barrier she guided us through the menu and even mentioned the octopus - which was off menu the day we went. Because we loved the drinks she prepared and the octopus was amazing we decided to order more food. Raul helped us with the food and his English was very good. The food here is excellent. Possibly the best ceviche I have ever had. Piña colada was perfect. The three taco appetizer was so well done I might cry. The service is attentive but not intrusive. I would have given it five stars if not for the front door staff. The woman at the front door looked me up and down and seemed to disapprove of my outfit. I'm a tourist in Tevas and cut off shorts, I get it. While beautiful inside and decent service, the food is lackluster. It's almost like they are trying too hard. The escargot was good, but a bit overdone with the phyllo dough (small squares of puff pastry over the escargot would have been better). The skirt steak was completely tough and inedible. My root vegetable soup tasted like chicken broth with puréed vegetables from a soup can with stale crunchy tortilla chips on top. My taco appetizer was good if I was judging just from the ahi taco. The pork and duck were bland and the mayo sauce was sweet and overly rich (like it was squeezed right out of the Japanese mayo bottle). My pear martini was way too sweet. SLOWEST and worst customer service of all the places we've visited throughout Puerto Rico! We were there for THREE hours!!! It shouldn't take 3 hours for dinner. We had a party of 8 but had 4 different servers coming to our table taking orders and serving. It was like a circus there. Apparently no one communicated with one another because our friend waited 45 minutes for a glass of wine! We kept telling them each time they passed by but still no wine. However, when the bill finally arrive three hours later, we got charged SEVEN glasses of wine! WOW. Food was decent but the long wait and bad service had already left a bad taste in our mouths. One of the kids wanted a skirt steak and they brought him the special NY steak with blue cheese on it. He barely touched it so that was a waste of $50. However, they served me a magnificent, perfectly cooked, huge ribeye with a classic risotto. My husband ate the lamb chops with a mint pesto and a classic risotto with vegetables. Both dishes were delicious! Our appetizer was salmon sashimi on top of a breadfruit crisp with mango pico de gallo and spicy Mayo. The Mayo was too spicy for my taste, good thing we ordered it on the side. The pico de gallo was super fresh. In overall it was a light and refreshing appetizer. For dessert I had a chocolate cake and it was light and delicious, not too sweet, it was perfect. Our waiter José was amazing with us. Managed to get a high-top table on a weekend night and the place did not disappoint. Bartender was our server and was fantastic fun and engaging. This was our first fuel stop of the day upon arriving in Ponce. The interior is absolutely wonderful. It has a very "retro" trendy vibe, with lots of cool art on the walls. The furniture was super cute and chic. The prices were a little bit steeper than what we wanted to pay for lunch but it was worth it for the quick and courteous service. Our waiter was attentive and able to speak to the English-only members of our group very comfortably. I ordered the Mofongo with (Pork) Carnitas. The meat was really salty but the Mofongo itself was perfection! My meal also came with some sort of Tuscan Bean Soup. Not exactly traditional, but it was quite good. We stopped in here for a late afternoon lunch. Lola can be found out back of the Ramada hotel (side note the Ramada looks beautiful) next to the pool. There were definitely some misses in my book. 5 STARS: The staff - attentive. The menu - yes it really is eclectic and should satisfy most foodies. The house bread - soaked in balsamic and olive oil... this was great. 4 STARS: The prices - somewhat pricey but it was spot on considering the location and it's inside a hotel. 3 STARS: They didn't have the lolita martini available, or the second choice I tried to order. I went with a mojito which was good, but not spectacular. The food took a while. I'm from the island, I understand island time, but for impatient tourists this may be a bit slow. The food - we ordered a lola sampler app platter that came with - bacon wrapped mahi (a bit dry in my book), the mango/chicken bruschetta (the chicken looked it came from a can?), the risotto balls (these were great) and the beef eggrolls (not good).
