One of the most unflattering haircuts I've received in a while. The stylists are talented but I felt I was not listened to. I asked for more tapering at the back to give shape to my wavy hair as well as some texture as it can tend to look bulky. A different cut was suggested to me and I was ready to trust the stylist after reading so many 5 star reviews. The cut I received was done quickly and there was not much movement in it. Worst experience. Rachel did an absolute hack job of my haircut. Could not tell at first as she cut it wet and curled it after. Even had me stand up for part of the haircut which I thought was strange as although I've always had long hair, no stylist has ever asked me to do this. She was also incredibly rough with my hair when brushing it, which was pretty painful. Job was very rushed. Was not a good experience. Hands down worst haircut I've ever received. I'm used to basement hair salons in people's homes but I really wanted to do something different this time. I got my hair cut by Janice one of the owners way back at the end of August. She did a balayage or ombre to my black Asian hair and a fresh new cut. She was extremely personable down to earth and soo easy to talk to. I didn't have much requests but she knew exactly what to do esp cut off that "rat tail"! I came out of there with the blonde giggles as they called it. I absolutely loved it and still do. Was looking for a new salon that was convenient. I am a devoted salon girl... and will pay for quality. I needed a new salon as it was getting more and more difficult to book appts at my regular salon as they are very busy. I gave Lola a try and unfortunately it didn't work out. New, clean, good price point and friendly atmosphere. No complaints about client service/staff support. I was looking to brighten and cover roots... asked for my regular full blonde highlites w/some low lights. I ended up 100% brunette!?!? I was really disappointed as I had hoped this would be my new salon. I was in need of a colour. I understand the first time you try a hair stylist or salon there are going to be some adjustments. Unfortunately I couldn't get past the outcome of my colour and ended up at another new salon - 24 hrs later - to have it corrected (Tony @ Seefu 10/10). The cut with highlites, rinse and tip +$200... unfortunately I ended up paying the same amount the next day (plus a bigger tip) to have it corrected. Truthfully I didn't go back to the Lola salon as I didn't feel confident they'd know how to correct it. During the time I was there two other ladies came in for colour corrections... that didn't leave me with a lot of confidence. I chose the salon primarily on Yelp reviews... which most referenced Jay. Unfortunately Jay wasn't available otherwise I may have gone back for the colour correction. The rating is based on the overall outcome.. It should probably be a one or two if it wasn't for the friendly staff and the fact it's a new salon. I wish them all the best. read more

Modern, charming salon with fantastic stylists. Jay is amazing-- he instantly puts you at ease, listens but also shares great ideas, moves quickly without rushing, and makes you look great. Following him to LOLA from Parlour was a no-brainer. I had my hair coloured recently by Francis and am super impressed he was able to translate my "make my boring brown winter hair less dull" request into something glossy with lots of depth and dimension. Melissa gave me a great lesson in building volume. She's the best. Great space, friendly people, online booking is a breeze, and I LOVE the Italian Davines products they use. Jay has been cutting my hair since we both had chipmunk cheeks. I even used to go to NY every six months to have him sort me out when he was a stylist there in Union Square. What I love about his work is that it grows in so well - which is what great hair cuts do. He's not into the big, fancy blow outs (although he will do those if asked, and I've seen him train more than one stylist in the art of the blow), he wants to see the cut because to him it is a science. Like craft beer or tongue and groove furniture. I've also seen him work miracles on my girlfriends (most of whom have become long time clients as well) and my son. He can take the worst Top Cuts hack job and make it look funky. The man is a freaking genius with scissors - like Edward Scissorhands... sans murder. read more

I was in town visiting and got my hair cut by Jay. I will say it's one of my favorite haircuts that I've gotten. And now three months later here in LA with so many salons to choose from, all I want is another Jay cut. It felt really good from day 1 and grew in really nice. What did you do at the back Jay?! I will say, for someone who has always not tipped the salon owner, I was a bit thrown when the receptionist indicated that everyone tips Jay even though he is the owner and the most expensive stylist there. I believe Sandi was the amazing woman who cut my hair (I'm horrible with names) but I am so happy with everything this salon did for me. I moved from California where I've used the same stylist for 3 years and never stray. I was so nervous but the color specialist here helped me match my color and it turned out exactly how I have it done back home. Went in for a colour and cut this past Sunday and received way more than I anticipated. I couldn't be happier. Janice is amazing amazing amazing with colour. She took my dated dip dye way up to a nice and sleek sombré for the summer. I really appreciate how much work she put into making my hair look modern and fresh for the season. Afterward, Jay cut my hair into a chic textured long bob and all I can say is wow. They are both so skilled and passionate about what they do and it really shows! I visited the salon to get my hair cut and coloured. On my way to the appointment, the owner of the salon, Janice called me to tell me that the colourist was no longer available to colour my hair "because the colourist had a fight with a stylist". After I told her that she had to figure out a solution (I was already on my way), she called me back and said she would do it herself. Although she figured out a solution, I wish she had solved the problem before calling me. But more importantly, I wasn't satisfied with her work - the highlights were quite chunky and didn't grow out well at all. Thank goodness my stylist has moved to another salon. read more

Went in for a trim this past Saturday with Janice. Although she is technically a "junior" stylist, she has more than enough skill and experience to make even the most hesitant client comfortable. Great conversation and took her time listening to what I wanted; and she definitely delivered. She point-cut the whole hairstyle (which is my favorite way of getting my hair cut because it makes sure there are no harsh lines or layers). Styled it the way I like, which with short hair can be tricky. 100% recommend Janice and LOLA Salon. An overall pleasant experience in a funky, yet unpretentious salon. read more

I was looking for a new stylist.. a friend recommended a nearby salon that was full, so I tried here. I booked a last minute appointment with Jay, and it's a few weeks later but I'm so pleased with the results. The experience in the salon was great - for someone who is VERY nervous going to new places, and almost never happy with a haircut, I wouldn't hesitate to go back or recommend this place to anyone. Most importantly - Jay listened me! I didn't feel blown off, or uncomfortable at all, but but also was not too hesitant to offer his opinion and advice on how what not to do and how to help me improve the condition/appearance of my hair. I'm confident that he would have only taken off why I initially suggested, but he recommended what I needed to cut, and weeks later, in so happy with it. It still feels like it was just cut, but I have all the length I want. It's more manageable than it's been in a couple of years... im not sure if it's the cut or product, but I went out after an purchased some products based on his recommendation... and either way, I'm better off after his services. Really lovely place. Lovely people. Very reasonable price. Great skill. The biggest thing - I really felt comfortable here. I just moved to the City and I decided to try this salon out. The overall vibe of the place is great and everyone seems very nice and welcoming, however I will not be going back. I'm pretty trusting with hair stylists and am pretty much open to anything, but the lady colouring my hair made me extremely nervous about it. I really am not picky and all I really wanted was to lighten my hair from the red shade it was. I had booked time for balayage and wanted to add blonde. But right off the bat I was told that the look I wanted would be "impossible". I asked for suggestions, but I just being told how much work it would be to get the red out of my hair and that it's actually a colour correction I needed. We googled pictures but everything I brought up was being shot down. The colourist seemed very unsure about what she could do to make my hair lighter and unsure about what would look good. I almost felt guilty for wanting to add blonde to my hair and I was very tempted to leave before we even started. She did aplogize for how the beginning of the appointment was handled, which I did appreciate...but it should not have been necessary. She did end up lightening it (balayage hightlights) and the colour is ok. But I don't love it and I don't feel it was worth the money. On a positive note the lady who cut my hair was a delight and made me relax a bit more. Regardless, when I got home that day, I was very upset about the whole experience and will not be going back. I would much rather go to my old hair salon two hours away. read more

My first and thankfully last experience with Lola Salon left me shaken and traumatized. I can honestly say it was the worst client service experience I have ever had in any customer service field. It's a very nice looking place, booking an appointment was easy and efficient, the receptionist was very pleasant, unfortunately I can't say the same for my stylist Sandi. She was passive-aggressively condescending from start to end. She kept asking for my preferences throughout the cut but with every single answer I gave whether slightly strayed beyond her objective she made me feel like it was an inferior opinion thus I quickly acquiesced to her professional opinion with "alright whatever you think is better" or "yes that looks good". I was resolved to paying whatever the price ($88 tip incl) irregardless of not getting the cut I asked for - just to end the persistent inquisition followed with belittling retorts. Even to the end when I very well knew the cut was not going as I had wanted I was tired of being constantly corrected by someone who made it clear to me that they were the professional and tried to appease her as best possible with "Yes it's good. Thank you" just to get out of that chair, but she wouldn't have it either and insisted that if I had qualms I should voice it - but from the start she wouldn't even hear me out! I told her again that honestly it was not the cut I had showed her but it was a nice cut none the less and she snapped back; "it is the same cut but don't just say 'it's nice'!" thus where do I go with that? I was put down for specifying the actual cut I wanted and when I tried to appease her just to end the ordeal she was not happy either. To be clear I came in showing her just 3 seconds of a 90 degree cut video (all hair length equal from the scalp at 90 degrees giving a "seamless layering" because the head is spherical) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Vt-rwFK0LI. She retorted immediately that she's a stylist and can tell what the cut is just by looking at a pic of it - yet she was more so concerned with how I wanted the framing of the hair around my face and how short or blunt I wanted the cut when I was more so concerned with getting the smooth sphere shape that can only be gotten from a 90 degree cut (classic haircut from beauty school). She basically cut my hair to one level, straight angle cut around my face, and freehand dry point cutting to lighten the density at the bottom. It's a nice cut and I've had it before but does not give the movement and shape that only the 90 degree cut can give which my senior toni & guy stylist gave me before I moved away. What it boils down to is that if you can't give me the haircut I want - THAT"S FINE! and I will pay $73 and I'll still tip you at least 20% for the effort but don't make me feel like a moron when I voice my opinion - which you ironically asked for and in the same breath shoot me down about because I couldn't lie and say your cut is the best ever?! What sets a great stylist from mediocre is their ability to listen to their client and not necessarily their haircutting talent. read more

After years of trying different stylists I was glad to have chosen this salon and gone to Janice for my cut and colour. Janice is really friendly and welcoming, as well as understanding of what you want your hair to look like. She gave me a wonderful cut that makes my hair look great without having to style it. The colour turned out beautiful as well. Janice fixed my multiple shades of blonde/brown and made everything flow through a lovely balayage. I'm very happy with the colour and cut! My friend came here to get a blowdry and I tagged along. This was last month. She booked with a Junior stylist I believe her name started with an "L". Anyways, to start off, the service was very unexpectedly unprofessional. My friend had a hair wash and I could see her face being sprayed with water at the sink the whole time even with her head leaned way back in. There was no hand to prevent the water from going in her eyes and I could easily see her whole face getting sprayed the entire dration. The blowdry she said was excruciating because her hair was being ripped at every brush pulling. But more than that was how her head kept cocking back and I could see my friend trying with all her strength to hold her head forward so she wouldn't injure it. Her neck muscles popped out from holding her neck. Her head kept getting yanked all the way back to the chair in forceful movements while being blowdried. I have been to many salons, even to training schools, never have I seen this torture and buch force. It was hard to watch. My friend mentioned that her scalp in the front was was burned and although she didn't speak up to state this, from what I understand, it's the stylists job to check constantly the state of temperature and/or ask the client if it's too hot. My friend said it gave her a migraine attack that lasted 3 days from trying to hold her neck in such a force and her neck took a couple of days and tylenol to recover. My friend doesn't do well with speaking up for herself when needed and I was too much of a coward to state the obvious. The person doing her hair didn't look content to begin with so it can be intimidating. I'm writing to speak on her behalf as she doesn't do this type of technology. I hesitated in writing this because of course It will affect the salon in some way.. and sorry for that, but my hope is that this can help by people getting further training and maybe some things will now get noticed that owners were not aware of. Communication on both parts need improvement of course since my friend could have said something. She still tipped 20% because of her morals and integrity. Otherwise, the owners and head stylists look like they have a ton of knowledge and skill and there is nothing against other services they offer. read more

What initially drew me towards Lola was the fact that all the products they use are Cruelty Free. I've left salons leaving very unsatisfied with the service and my cut, but Lola was definitely a game-changer. I brought in a photo of the style I wanted, and Jay went above and beyond to help me achieve my desired look. I have very fine, straight, and flat hair that won't hold a curl but somehow I left the salon with a head of voluminous hair with beautiful shape. He explained what he was doing, and even showed me how to style it on my own. I can now understand why everyone feels they are truly taken care of at Lola.
