I grew up in Montana and spent a lot of time around Bozeman and Big Sky, but first time visiting the historic 1930s and beautifully restored Lone Mountain Ranch. Checked out the Lytle bar (named after the family who homesteaded here), the gift shop with great Western wear; my friend got a cool white denim fringed jacket. The grounds are beautiful; walked up to their award winning restaurant , Horn and Cantle, and the very cool Saloon with live music. Decor was classy western. We enjoyed a handcrafted huckleberry cocktail a couple huckleberry lemonade mocktails and glass of wine, a mushroom appetizer, then our friends stayed for dinner. Saw a baby brown bear right outside; thankfully, did not see the mother! Totally recommend a visit here, and would love to stay here sometime! read more

Sometimes a place has an excellent reputation but sits on its laurels and loses the excellence that built that reputation. I'm leaving this review because our experience at this upscale all inclusive resort was wildly inconsistent. The property is beautiful and the staff is kind, but the level of miscommunication and operational confusion was unlike anything I've experienced at this price point. A few of the major issues: * Serious health risk: The boxed lunches on our first days were unsafe for my diabetic brother and put him at risk of diabetic shock. These were the only meals available due to our scheduled activities. * Two different planners, both incorrect: * A "featured" restaurant they offered was actually closed. * We were booked for an activity that doesn't start for another two weeks. * The sky lift was presented as available but wasn't open. * Hot air balloon miscommunication: * The time we were given was wrong. * The balloon company had no record of our reservation. * We would have missed it entirely if I hadn't reconfirmed repeatedly. * Itinerary changes without notice: * Our schedule was altered multiple times without anyone informing us. * Another guest in the lobby was having the exact same issues. There were many more problems beyond these. They did tell us an employee had sabotaged their system, but it would be impossible for that one person to have caused everything we experienced. Bottom line: We had a good time, and the place itself is beautiful. But when you compare the price to the actual experience, I could not justify the stay. read more

I can't say enough about this experience! I do have to say I thought it would be hokey, a typical dude ranch but we were pleasantly surprised. The little touches and length of customer service was beyond my expectations. We never had a bad experience or a disappointment. We stayed in Ouzel, it was perfect for the two of us. Amazing views all around us. The morning coffee service was a perfect touch, fresh coffee delivered every morning. Ian was our wrangler for our lunch horseback ride, all the perfect touches and he was an amazing guide to accompany. We even enjoyed the ax throwing and archery. The Auric Restaurant is a must! It's an experience in itself, service and the food was too shelf. The Horn & Cantle never disappointed either, food was very good! The Ranch set up our whitewater trip and our fly fishing trip....both were absolutely amazing. We highly recommend Line Mountain Ranch and we look forward to returning. read more

We opted for the sleigh ride and dinner experience and count it as one of our highlights of the trip! It's a bit pricey, but it does include a bottle of wine, dinner, welcome cocoa, and lots of fluffy animal pets. After checking in, we enjoyed the mulled wine and hot chocolate and explored out back. The horses were ready to go and accepting of pets. The adorable little goats trotting about the back seemed more interested in snacks than pets..but tolerated the petting. We dressed warm and had a blanket to keep us toasty as we traveled to the cabin. The horses all looked well cared for and were given lots of breaks to rest during the ride. The dinner was excellent, and the chef accommodated my gluten-free allergy easily. The live music was the perfect touch! We all left absolutely stuffed, farshnickered, and in good spirits. Do not book a horseback ride here -- extremely unsafe. The horses seemed unfamiliar with the trail, and mine appeared untrained. My saddle slipped sideways and I nearly fell off, then the horse suddenly bolted, and I was almost thrown. The wrangler had no control over the group, and the horses stopped constantly to graze. I've ridden horses many times and have never felt this unsafe. I can't believe I paid to spend two terrifying hours fearing for my safety. read more

my gosh, if i could write a book of how amazing this ranch is i would we were in town for a wedding and our breaths were taken away by how stunning the property was. we arrived at check in and was promptly greeted by Harris. He gave us a run down of the property, gave us a tour, then helped drive our suitcases up to our cabin which was followed by another amazing tour and information of the space we were staying in Larkspur cabin and it was more than we could dream of. from the fire place, to the games, to the heated bathroom floors, and of course the dyson hair products, it was a battle between leaving the cozy cabin and exploring the property. every morning we also got coffee delivered to our room with our requested milk options, and cookies delivered every evening. the food at the restaurant was also so so superb. their customer service would go above and beyond with the option to send a text should we need anything during our stay. we never waited more than 10 min to get a request delivered to our cabin which was so so amazing!! read more

Booked horseback riding for 7 members of our family. Our guides were amazing and patient and took us on an absolutely picturesque ride. We spotted deer in the field on our ride, too. The horses are beautiful, and the guides were really super patient and helpful with our group of riders from 10 years old to 50+ yrs old. The ranch is really amazing to check out, and we all walked out with a few gifts to bring home. Lone mountain ranch has been on our bucket list for two years and we decided to finally make the leap and go! It is a little pricy but it is all worth it! First off, when we emailed to get information, everyone was so helpful and accommodating. There are different packages to choose from that includes food and some excursions for diff seasons. Depending on what you are looking for the concierge will help you choose and provide pricing! We went with the winter package which came with 3 meals at horn and cantle everyday at the ranch, sleigh ride dinner, private concierge, Nordic skiing, snow shoeing and our cabin. We added a driver to get us at Bozeman, dog sledding and Yellowstone tour. Once we landed in Bozeman, everything was so magical! It snowed all three days we stayed and lots of sunshine. The ranch itself is located in Big Sky Montana and tucked away in its own little area away from the busier downtown area. As soon as we were dropped off, everyone in the ranch knew who we were and our itinerary to the T. They were all so welcoming and knowledgeable. They provided us with our schedule as soon as we got to the ranch and planned our everything (including our dinner reservations at horn and cantle) We got our tour of the ranch, restaurant and finally they showed us our cabin! We stayed at the bull moose cabin - absolutely beautiful and spacious! We had three fireplaces and even a little patio area. Our living room had a record player and tons of records (from the main outpost) to choose from! Tons of windows to stare at the stars and watch the snow fall. The first night we had our sleigh ride dinner. The sleigh ride was spectacular - you get whisked away by the horses on the ranch into a secret area of the ranch. All you see are the stars, alpine tree shadows and snow glistening on the ground! You eventually get to the cabin where dinner and music are served. Bruce the ranch musician told western stories and sang songs about everything you could think of. The dinner consisted of prime rib, pot pie, veggies, mash potatoes and an apple pie with ice cream and cowboy coffee! Our dog sled experience was with a separate company but lone mountain set it all up for us and dropped us off at the place. This was so much fun!! I would highly recommend doing the sledding through the spirit of the north. Afterwards we did snow shoeing where I got engaged! The entire crew was in on it and knew we were the couple that was gonna be engaged. They provided a fantastic photographer - Shea and everyone on the ranch the following days congratulated us. On our last day we went to Yellowstone for 8 hours on the snowcat. We had tons of fun with Randy and Mike. They were so knowledgeable and in touch with the wilderness. They gave us stories and information on the Native Americans and it that just gave us so much insight on how unique and (even more so) irreplaceable the animals and land is. We had a great lunch in a yurt and hot chocolate / tea. Saw tons of geysers and quite a few bison , coyote & birds! Side note : The food from horn and cantle were absolutely amazing and worth every penny. Thank you again lone mountain for making this trip so special! Everyone was amazing and we loved our stay. We had the absolute best trip at Lone Mountain Ranch. From the car service which grabs you from the airport to the text message concierge, LM is hands down some of the best service we've experience! The restaurant on property is delicious we enjoyed every meal! And tried unique dishes we've never had before (bison short rib, elk meatball etc.). The activities are amazing - wish we would have had one more day to horseback ride again. Yellowstone tour, fly fishing and horseback trail rides are a must! This ranch exceeded my expectations and I cannot wait to return! I have always dreamed of going to a dude ranch in MT and this was the perfect pick. I was traveling alone and opted to go for the Cowgirl Up Getaway. Best decision ever! Where do I start... First and foremost I was pleased with how I was contacted via email a couple of weeks before heading there with a list of activities I could participate in. Steffi then helped developed my personalized itinerary which was jam packed with all kinds of fun events. Once I got there I was greeted at the airport as promised and on the way to the ranch was provided water and snacks, perfect for a hungry traveler. Upon arriving at the ranch check-in was easy and as that was happening my bags were delivered to my cabin. I was then given a map of the grounds and personally escorted to my cabin by Alex. He was great and showed me around the cabin, pointed out features and also gave tips on using the wood stove. I stayed in the Chipmunk cabin and it was even better than I imagined with a brook running right along side I was able to fall asleep to it with the windows slightly cracked. The cabin had all the major essentials you might need like a full sized hair dryer, basic toiletries, snacks, a Keurig, even two mini sized bottles of wine. There is no TV (which I loved) but there is wifi and the signal is excellent. The only thing that would have been helpful to have would be a flashlight. I was able to use the one on my phone, but without that, the walk to this cabin at night is extremely dark. Also, the addition of curtains to the windows on the doors would be nice. If someone was to use the binoculars they provide in the rooms one could see a "great show" at night, haha. The ranch is very accommodating. You sign-up for most events you want to participate in before you arrive, but if you want to change or add things they are very accommodating. One should understand when visiting that a lot of the events are weather dependent so things change and shift. But you are in one of the most beautiful places I have ever seen so it's hard to get uptight (though some still do), lol. There is the Horn & Cantle Restaurant on the premises and the food there is fantastic! The menu changes frequently and there are new specials every day. The waitstaff is phenomenal! I have to give a special shoutout to the servers Ellen, Joel, Chris and Edwin. All were fantastic and made you feel like family while you were there. They were always in the best mood and always willing to do whatever it took to be sure your dinning experience was top notch. Oh and their pastry chef Laurie makes desserts that are to die for! The activities were as one would expect, though being a person who had never ridden a horse before, I do feel that they could have done better in that aspect. Before arriving they have you fill out a rider survey, they use it to determine what type of horse to put you on, but I also feel that it would be a great tool to see how many "virgin riders" they have and provide a education session prior to a first ride. I was given little instruction on my first ride and after it was over the wrangler guiding us was surprised to learn it was my first ride. I just feel the wranglers should be informed ahead of time as to the the level of experience each rider has before taken them out. It can be a very nerve-racking experience, especially on some of the trails they take you on with narrow paths and sharp cliffs. However, despite the lack of communication regarding the rides, I am still giving this ranch 5 stars and I will definitely go back! Highly recommend!!! read more

Spending a few days here. Came on a gift from my wife's boss. We had to get here but lodging & meals are gratis. Lodging is rustic high endy cabins in an extremely rural area just northwest of Yellowstone. The largest Nordic skiing complex and trails in N America. We did cross country today. It was our first time and we had a guide, Martha. A wonderful tutor - we are Alpine skiers and had never done cross country before. So much fun but a real workout. Hiking and snow shoe trails are everywhere. All equipment and lessons are included. Our cabin is comfortable, cozy and well appointed. There is a wood burning stove which we have used a few times. The king bed is very comfortable. There is no television. Ok with us we did not come here to watch television. The sleigh ride dinner was fabulous last night. Big slabs of perfectly cooked prime rib. We were truly amazed at the show in the sky. There was no moon and the sky was astounding, it almost looked fake. We have been to many places but this was by far the most incredible sky view for us. The folks at the ranch are fabulous. Delightful, attentive and cheerful all the time. How do they do that? A text to guest services produces immediate results. We have had a few meals and 3 meals a day are included in the package. The on site restaurant is the Horn & Cantle with a great chef, and a Saloon attached. Alcohol is not included. The food we have had has been very good. Everything is farm to table and the dishes are prepared well. We have had bison, elk & trout. I particularly enjoyed the elk chili. They prepared boxed lunches for our trip to Big Sky for a day of downhill skiing. Our day trip to Big Sky was fabulous. The area is quite large and we only sampled a portion. But the conditions were almost perfect with a mixture of sun, snow and clouds. It is 10 minutes from where we are staying and Lone Mountain shuttled us back and forth. We hear from other guests that summertime is even better for recreational activities. I think anyone who likes the outdoors would love this place. Tipping is discouraged. They add a 15% gratuity based in the total spend. I am not a fan of this normally but the service here was top notch and we did not have a problem with that approach here. The place is great if a bit pricey. Seems like a far way to travel to get some great skiing. But we felt it was a real nice place to spend a few late winter days together. Mark & Nancy. read more

My family and I did the sleigh ride dinner here on the last night of our trip in Big Sky. It couldn't have been any more magical or the staff couldn't have been any kinder. We had a handicapped member of our party who was very nervous about how he would be able to participate and the staff went out of their way to ensure that he was comfortable, safe, included, and had a memorable time. STAY AWAY FROM LONE MOUNTAIN RANCH! THEY ARE NOT ACTIVELY FOLLOWING THEIR OWN STATED COVID PROTOCOLS! The following statement was included in our reservation confirmation, but after a recent 4 night stay, we found that no one at the ranch was actually putting these protocols into practice. As a result, our family of two adults and two young children have tested positive for COVID-19 upon our return home. COVID-19 PROTOCOLS DURING YOUR VISIT TO LMR "Our new protocols include capacity reductions in all food & beverage areas, health measures during our activities and an EPA recommended cleaning process in our cabins and throughout the property." - FALSE. All of our evening meals, both at the Horn & Cantle Restaurant and the North Ridge Cabin (sleigh ride), were packed to full seating capacities. Our cabins were clean, however all public restrooms, ie Outpost and Restaurant, were dirty and neglected. Not sure what is meant by "health measures". We saw none being taken. "Don't forget your mask! Per Governor Bullock's July 15th Directive, all people over the age of 5 must wear masks inside public spaces, which includes our Outpost and Horn & Cantle Restaurant. All Shuttle drivers, Concierge and Wait staff were unmasked and often did not (or could not) maintain appropriate social distancing. Even though they never wore masks, we received outstanding service from the following folks on the LMR team during our stay: Miles (Shuttle Driver) Ellen (Hostess & Waitress) Porter (Waiter) Ben (Sleigh Driver) Jordan (Nordic Ski Instructor) Erika & Naomi (Front Desk & Concierge) Jordann & Emma (Reservations) Here were the highlights of our LMR experience: Concierge and shuttle service responsiveness, Skating, Nordic Skiing, Snowshoeing, and Sledding This was our 2nd time staying with LMR. Our first was two summers ago, and unfortunately, several wonderful aspects that prompted us to return this past winter will sadly keep us from coming back in the future. Their National Geographic Society designation was no longer valid. Every time we lit a fire in the cabin, smoke would pour out of the interior flue vents. That usually indicates that flies need to be cleaned-out, ie heavy creosote build-up. Most of the indoor public areas looked like they had not been dusted and/or mopped in a very long time. The outside temps were often below 0 degrees and without a fire going, the cabins were quite chilly. There were no door sweeps/draft stoppers to keep cold air out, and one of the bathroom heaters was completely non-functioning. There were no sitting areas in our cabins (Lame Deer & Canyon). Both cabins had twin beds where a true day bed could have been better used as sitting areas. Overall, the food was not what it had been two years ago. Most of it was either heavily salted and over-buttered (lobster), or just bland (trout). The sleigh ride dinner was equivalent to eating at Golden Corral and the breakfast/lunch buffets had little to no daily variety whatsoever. Although the record players were a welcome diversion while spending time inside our cabins, our young kids love to play games. We had read that the cabins come equipped with games, and while there were some Lincoln Logs and a deck of cards my daughter found under one of the beds, they could not provide any additional games when we made the request. We spoke personally with Randy, the property manager, and requested that all of our car rides with just our family and a LMR driver be mask-required. He said he would make sure that happened. But it did not. Our driver who took us to the Bozeman airport didn't even have a mask (we had to provide one for him) and gave us a begrudging attitude when we politely asked him to wear it while in the car with us. "You know this is Montana," he said. So we paid more than $12,000 for four nights, were made to feel shamed and embarrassed when we asked that staff where masks (how dare we inconvenience them!!), and we came home with our family's first COVID infections (we're all vaxed and boostered, btw). We had discussed bringing three generations to LMR this summer but that will definitely not happen. And we will no longer sing LMR's praises as we have for the past two years. On May 19, I went in for dinner with my friends. We sat in the bar room and I believe our server her name was Peyton. It surely stated with a P and I could easily pinpoint her out if I were to return. (gingerish hair but even the host did not know her as she stated "I'm sorry I do not know the servers in that room). We love coming here however, I asked Peyton how she was. "The people are just annoying me today". Her attitude clearly showed as the entire table agreed we did not deserve that. She only checked on us after she tossed the menus on the table and catering to every table she had except ours. Highly without knowledge own regards to splitting our bill because she never checked on us once. Only glanced over. Which turned into me shaking her what both parties had on the screen and even still her attitude did not change. If this is how service is to be expected at Lone Mountain Ranch, then it's a shame that place is still running. Paying to be treated so poorly. read more

I ordered a 4 cheese pasta because I can only eat a few oils including olive oil, and they brought me a totally plain plate of boiled pasta-for $39. She made us all very comfortable with our horses, shared fun and interesting wildlife facts along the trail, and even lent a hand as our photographer. So disappointed. We spent a fortune to have wonderful meals, and exciting activities. We got neither. We prepared for this vacation for some time. My mom and I have been horseback riders our whole lives and were so excited to find a place that was beautiful and had horses on property. We were not able to ride due to weather, but the staff did nothing to help replace that with any activity at all. We did not one thing on this property but sleep and walk around to the bar. The chef quit the week prior so we had buffet meals each morning and evening, the most disappointing aspect of all, so we didn't bother after the first scraped together meal. We ended up renting a car and venturing out for meals and activities on our own. This place is very mismanaged and we feel we deserve some compensation for our $7000 for 3 night room and no good meal or activity that was promoted. Very misleading website. The right thing to do would have been to alert us of there being no one to cook for us. No one wants a luxury vacation with a buffet each night. If you make plans to go be certain there is a new management team and definitely a new chef! The sleigh dinner was also canceled. Not One activity. I am just stunned at the lack of concern.
