We stayed for 3 nights and had a delicious, homemade breakfast cooked to order each day (and we got to choose what time it was served). We could talk or not, roam the grounds or not, relax or run around. All our choice, in a beautiful setting. And oh, they also have a super-clean kennel onsite (you can't hear the dogs in your cottage). I'd happily stay here again.
The Albian Aerodrome is located approximately 14km east of Fort Mackay and 65km north (as the crow…read moreflies) of the Fort McMurray Airport. East of the Athabasca River, the Aerodrome has access to single lane roads that connect with Highway 63 approximately 11km to the west of the Aerodrome. Total road distance to Fort McMurray Airport is approximately 95km. The scale of the work that goes on within the Northern Alberta Oil Sands area is staggering. There are thousands of workers up here and a complicated and immense infrastructure to support all this activity. That includes the Albian Aerodrome which was built to fly employees to work and back. It's pretty impressive to see a modern (albeit a small 1 runway operation) like this in the middle of nowhere. When I flew up recently on one of the roomy Company Jets (an Embraer), it was just like commercial coach airline service, except a little better. Most of my fellow passengers lived in the Calgary area, flew up on Monday Morning for work, stayed at the Albian Village during the week and flew home on Thursday afternoon. That makes for a 3 day weekend (with some at home work involved) and a hard commute life as this goes on month after month. The Aerodrome facilities are on basic side, but after going through Security the Departure Lounge is comfortable enough and with free Wi-fi. On Departure Day, there's a lot of happy energy in the room and it's fun to rub friendly elbows with folks from all sorts of different backgrounds and rank. On Arrival Day there's more of a quiet determination to get the job done and a chance to reflect as everyone piles into the school buses for the short ride into the Office.
