Throwing peanut shells on the floor is strongly encouraged!

While it would be impossible to duplicate the exact look and feel of the infamous Long Bar at the Raffles in Singapore, the Long Bar at the Raffles in Manila comes amazingly close. No visit here would be complete without ordering a Singapore Sling, which is the signature cocktail of the original Long Bar in Singapore (and of course, this one too). Another signature of the Long Bar in both places is unshelled, roasted peanuts, which are provided as a complimentary appetizer. Apparently they're a traditional snack in Singapore; I've always enjoyed the fact that they encourage you to throw the shells on the floor when you're done with them. Tip: On my last visit here, I enjoyed their very inexpensive Happy Hour special, which includes unlimited beer and wine AND a generous serving of the surprising good Chef's Snack Plate. You'll probably need to order some additional food if you plan to be able to walk out the door under your own power ;-) My choice for additional food last time out was the sliders and Long Bar fries. This dish was pretty disappointing; the sliders were overcooked, oily and hard, while the fries were soggy and way too salty. Bottom line: The food prices are high, even for a hotel bar, but the service is excellent, the happy hour value proposition is simply outstanding, and there's nothing quite like a Singapore Sling. I'll doubtless return when next I'm in Manila.

It's long. And a bar. Cool vibe. Good service. Made a great drink. Opens at 5pm which kind of stinks. Otherwise crack a peanut and enjoy.

It too is a part of the Raffles Hotel in Manila, but don't be confused as it's also listed as a part of the Fairmont.

The atmosphere is definitely a vibe--chill and social. Music starts up later in the evening (around 9 PM, I believe), which helps transition the mood as night falls. We visited fairly early and enjoyed the shift when the music began. However, one interaction notably dampened the experience. A brief, joking conversation with a bouncer took an unexpectedly dark turn. When I lightheartedly asked if anyone had ever tripped on the spiral staircase, he replied, "Only if I throw them off." Joking or not, for someone responsible for patron safety, this felt in poor taste and sounds like he wants to look or sound intimidating. It's a remark that unfortunately sticks with you. And it was of bad taste. Overall, Z Roof Deck has much to offer in terms of views and ambiance, but attention to staff training and customer interaction would elevate it from a good spot to a great one. 2 star from poor choice of words from the security at the roof deck. Interiors are beautiful and cozy. The leather chairs, central bar, and decor take you to another world where you can enjoy your classic cocktail, scotch, or wine in utter opulence. The staff are always efficient and helpful when serving and suggesting drinks if you are feeling a little adventurous. Try the Negroni 1919 or the Espresso Martini. Good selection of wines too and a decent repertoire of Single Malts (for a price!). Bar chow is available too if you feel like you need more than the refillable snacks they serve you. It's also the perfect place to have an intimate conversation or a casual meeting. Cigar smokers and smokers alike will enjoy the fact that you can smoke here (sorry non-smokers!). Price points are expensive compared to your average bars or speakeasies but you're at The Peninsula after all. The overall feel is nostalgic, classic, and definitely for those who enjoy high quality cocktails and drinks in a place that makes you feel like you're transported to a bar in Cuba with different world music playing in the background.

I was hired to do event coverage and took photographs of a bridal shower recently and was surprised that they chose to have it at Society Lounge, which is more know to many as a bar or a spot for a good night out. Well, it wasn't night yet, but I knew it was going to be dark even before we'd be out. The venue is beautiful, very sophisticated, with dark, luxurious colors and patterns on the wall. There's a small stage where the hosts of the party took over the games and festivities. After lots of laughs and cheers, they then munched away and so did I. Among others, they served bite-sized pizza, dumplings, and mozzarella sticks, which were all presented in big tiles that were used as serving platters. I was sure glad that work took me there that day and I got to see and experience Society Lounge, do one of the things I love, and earn as well.

I had never hung out at Society Lounge mainly because I was maybe 20 years old then and on a student budget. Society Lounge is known to be an expat hangout, a venue for post work drinks or socializing from the foreign corporate set in Makati CBD. The prices for drinks were pretty high for me, though I see now how they are quite reasonable if you're not just carrying around your allowance! Catering to a cosmopolitan crowd, they serve some decently made cocktails and have a good selection of liquor. I was pleasantly surprised to find that their food was also good. I mean, I had a burger and some shrimp cocktails but they were fine. On a properly planned out double date night or girls night out, I would consider going to Society Lounge again. Oh, and yes, they have live music every now and then, too!
