He purchased the home and property in 1843 & traveled 3 hrs each way by steamship on the weekends. In 1975 his great-granddaughter donated his home & 7 acres to the county recreation & cultural purposes. The museum closed in 2009 due to lack of funds, however the volunteers of Friends of Cedarmere are currently restoring it. There were 2 small parking lots and a Porto potty. We walked through the beautifully manicured gardens, sat on the porch & appreciated the views. We need to make a reservation to tour the inside of the home.

The Clock Tower was commissioned by Ellen Eliza Cairnes Ward's children and dedicated to her memory in 1895. The tower is beautiful and it the symbol of the village. We got a Groupon for this place, which makes the price a lot more reasonable. They don't open until…read more1 pm on the weekends, and on Saturdays they don't even give guided tours. Instead, they give an "augmented reality" audio tour which is kind of hit or miss. The house was preserved for the historical significance of the Townsend family, one of which was a spy for George Washington. I didn't feel there was a ton of information on the family though. Pointing their phone at the different objects in a room turned on audio about them, but only a couple of rooms in the actual house were interactive. The rest didn't have signs, and one loan employee was around to answer questions at the end. The exhibit in the visitor center was nice though. I just don't think the AR experience was really up to replacing a person, both in amount of information and the uncanny valley, unnerving portraits. There is street parking and a nearby lot that are free on weekends. The gift shop is minimal. It was an okay spot to visit, but I would recommend coming on Sunday or whenever they offer actual tours to get a more thorough understanding of the house and the history of the people who lived here.

That means that when you walk through the buildings, you scan the cell phone device on important paintings and artifacts and they talk to you with further information about who or what they are. The small building that contains the entrance is packed with paintings, dioramas, documents and artifacts. Next you walk to the main house, built in the 1730's, and housing the Townsend family. At the time of the Revolutionary War, Samuel had to make room for a British colonel. In spite of the fact that he sympathised with the patriots, he maintained good relations with his "Guest." At the time of the war, the house had eight rooms. One of his sons was one of the leaders of the Culpepper Spy Ring, Placing the home on the National Registry of Historic Places. Each room was elegantly decorated, with the exception of the space for the enslaved housekeeper. In spite of the fact that we didn't get a formal tour, the staff member tagged along with us and kept up a spirited conversation - even giving us a bonus look at the Victorian wing which doubled the size of the structure. I was waiting for a family member to get out of long surgery at St. Francis and couldn't just sit…read morein the waiting area for that long. I announced I was going to take a walk, and was told by some car-dependent Long Islanders there wasn't anything out there and there were no sidewalks anyway. Man, adventure is everywhere. Not even ten minutes up the road from the hospital I stumble upon The Art Guild (aka Elderfields Historic Preserve, The Hewlett-Munson-Williams House), a museum and artists studio that has taken up residence in the oldest house in Nassau County (1675). You're free to wander around the home, looking in all its nooks and crannies. Downstairs a painting class was being held and budding artists put their creations to canvas with soothing music playing in the background. Tea, coffee, and treats are available for a modest price. Each month the art theme changes, the month I went the theme was transportation and I thought the art was very well done! Upstairs you'll find some of the resident artists studios, with their work on display as well. There are kitschy bathrooms with ornate light fixtures, creaky floorboards, heavy doors with their original skeleton keys, dimpled glass window panes, bits of original wallpaper, fireplaces, antique furniture, dormer windows, etc. The ground are also beautiful: old barns and sheds, picket fences, stone pathways, stone walls, blooming trees, a gazebo, creaky gates. On a cloudy, misty, early spring day I felt like I was exploring a secret garden in New England. Just up the road from this is Flower Hill Park, a small but pretty park that is also a nice respite from the waiting room. If you're in the area, or anxiously waiting in the hospital, this is a nice stop to make if you're looking for a calm, soothing environment with friendly people who are happy to either chat with you or let you wander the grounds solo. I got my tickets that day and wound up with front row center tickets. All for 32$$$ BARGAIN. Got there and the parking was very confusing. I found a spot on a nearby street and walked the rest of the way. Inside was a bit confusing but i wound up at my seat and the show was phenomenal. It was amazing to see an artist you love that close. Only thing was their was zero air conditioning and it was hot as hell. I was sweating the whole 3 hours. So were the people around me. But hey i had a great show. I met him afterwards and it was amazing So yeah ill be back next year.

Valet service was quick and easy. All the wait staff were extremely accommodating. The drinks here were awesome. The food here was even better. It was a Thanksgiving feast that we came for and we were very pleased with what we got. They had a buffet for appetizers and desserts that looked incredible and tasted great as well. There were tons of variety and everything tasted fresh. The Turkey they brought to the table looked incredible. The stuffing, mashed potatoes, vegetables, and all the fixings were perfect in every way. Although we were in a large dining room, they really made us feel like we we were having an intimate family Thanksgiving dinner and I really appreciated it. Loved the tons of different desserts as well. Nothing makes me happier than a dessert buffet, so I had no choice but to get at least one of everything.
