We have been coming to York the last 4 summers and we love the General store. It's so convenient. While we didn't have any issues with the previous owners (yes, they could be grumpy at times) but the people who bought it 2 years ago are very nice. They have done a lot of improvements and it's looks so much better. Much cleaner and organized. This year they added digital menu boards which makes it so much easier to see. Sandwiches are very good. We stop everyday as it is convenient to where we stay. read more

The place was an absolute mess. The man behind the counter was the most miserable person. Ordering food took about 10 minutes due to confusion on where to order. When we finally asked, the staff became quite demeaning. To beat the confusion, make signs! Especially for the tourist! the man, I assuming his name is Don (based off of the other numerous reviews) took our orders. The way he acted was disgusting. Rude, miserable, disrespectful of costumers buying HIS food. Have some class. Dude.... you are not the only person going through it. read more

I wasn't sure what I was going to do this day so I wandered around town, driving along the coast line. I ended up down on what is called Long Sands. The water was great to look at here as the waves were ferocious. They pounded the surf below the street where I parked. When I looked across the street there was the Long Sands general Store. I ducked in, not positive what I was going to get. It's a quaint store, with merchandise for locals and knickknacks for the tourists too. A nice gal who seemed to be running the whole place said hi and asked if she could help with anything. That's when I noticed the ice cream coolers to the left side of the store. It was a chilly day but I knew I wouldn't be able to leave without at least seeing what flavors they had. When she read off the flavors an one was local wild blueberries I knew I was going to give in. I asked for a medium, but I'm pretty sure I got some extra on that bad boy. It was a glorious purple tower of ice cream. It tasted at least as good as it looked. It's a nice store to stop in, especially if you could go for a couple scoops of goodness. read more

I hate to give negative reviews, but this was the worst lobster roll I have ever had in my life, and I am born & bred in the gloucester area. I purchased their 12.99 lobster roll , and it was more like a lobster salad roll, the portions was very small as well. Theres more lobster in a 6.99 market basket roll. Very dissatisfied since they are short walk from the docks and it wasnt a true lobster roll but a lobster salad roll. Now I dont know how their other food is, I tried to have some of their "famous clam chowder" but they were sold out. For a convenience store with beer and cigarettes its the most convenient place to visit if your at the beach. If you are thinking of trying a lobster roll in my opinion I would try a different restaurant. read more

This is my 4th summer visiting York Beach, my mother in law has a second home there and I've always been a huge fan of the General Store. The guy behind the counter can come off as a bit crude but there are days he's just fine. The food is always super yummy and the coffee is fresh and bold. I went yesterday because I was in desperate need of conditioner since I was planning on swimming in the ocean and my hair was going to be super dry after. I asked the woman behind the counter if they sold any and they were out. I tried two places before the general store so I was feeling a bit defeated. She called another local store and they were also out. She then went upstairs and grabbed me HER PERSONAL conditioner AND shampoo. I can't remember the last time someone was that kind to me. She's an absolute gem and she deserves all the goodness this world has to offer. This interaction alone made me a loyal customer every time I come up for vacation. Loved the food! The pumpkin doughnuts were everything I could have hoped for! The chicken tenders were amazingly seasoned and perfectly crispy. The fish and chips were very good. Convenient if you are on Long Sands Beach. The picnic tables in front are a great place to hang out, people watch, and also watch the ocean. They also frequent the most New England looking people ever. I love getting a lobster roll and fries at the deli counter and having lunch on the picnic tables. This isn't a restaurant, but they have a decent take out menu and some benches outside. I was talked into their "real Italian" sub by a fellow ahead of me in line who fell in love with the sandwich when he first stopped there on vacation 20 years ago. The real Italian is made on a hoagie roll with board head salami, provolone, ham, veggies and some sort of seasoned sandwich oil. It made for an outstanding meal. I noticed they had a reasonably priced lobster roll on the menu, but I was glad I ordered the Italian sandwich. read more

We went to get lunch at the general store my lady friend and I had lobster rolls that came with fries $14.99. Great value and the perfect amount for lunch. Great beer selection. I'd suggest that you be ready to order when it's your turn help the staff and the people waiting behind you. Everyone loved the French fries one in our group got cheese sticks loved them. Burger was good. The menu isn't easy to read and you might miss something. I don't know if they have a paper menu. read more

If I could leave 0 stars I would. First of all, they are over priced. I expect to pay more since it is a "beach store" but $8 for a cheese sandwich??? Secondly, the portions are SMALL and the owner has said to me 2 out of the last 3 times I've ordered ice cream "biggest small I've seen", you need to get out more pal because it is actually one of the smallest smalls I've seen. Lastly, and most importantly...I was lucky enough to have some alone time with my newly turned 7 year old tonight... he got a small cookie dough in a cup. While at the register over paying for it he dropped a quarter sized piece of ice cream on the ground (which I quickly got a couple of napkins and cleaned). The owner said " you may be the reason I stop selling ice cream". I didn't reply because I didn't want to say something in front of my son. But after that comment I can tell him, HE is the reason we will not be back to his store. I only bought ice. Waited to order food with no one in line, finally after waiting, I was acknowledged then told some one would be with me in a few minutes. I left, what does a few minutes mean to them after I've been waiting for five. Went there this morning to get an egg and cheese sandwich, figured I'd give it another go, 25 minutes for an egg and cheese sandwich. Never ordered it. I will never again go this store. The owner, Don Sydlier, is the most ignorant, unprofessional, classless person I've ever dealt with. My onion rings were over salted to the point of being inedible. I returned them on my way to a play, I had 10 minutes and I wanted my money back or a coupon for my next visit for a new order of onion rings. Don told me there was not a "damn thing" he could do to fix the situation. He informed me that he will never refund money for food because he believes people eat half the food and then return it, in order to eat for free. This was not that. I was completely shocked that a business owner would speak, much less treat me with such little respect. There is a much nicer, cleaner store right up the beach, Oceanside Store, where the customer service is excellent. I would advise everyone to stay away from this establishment, unless you're ok with giving your hard earned money to someone who has no regard for you. read more

I have been going to York Beach for 30 years and in the past have shopped at the General Store. Things have drastically gone down hill since the most recent owners have taken over. I believe they are Don & Erika. They are extremely rude and ignorant people! I have avoided going there since last summer's bad experience but decided to give them another chance this summer. Big mistake! The first thing that turned me off was the cat that I noticed walking all over the store while they were making my sandwich. That can't be okay, that cat had run of the place. I wondered if my sandwich would have cat hair in it! Then even more concerning was the rude man behind the counter making a sandwich with NO GLOVES on, and he did not look clean, he was sweaty and dirty, it was Don. There is a store right down the beach, "Oceanside" that is far superior. Do yourself a favor and avoid this dump. They offer very, very poor service. I have personally seen and was the victim of their rude comments. I will never go back!!! read more

I was really impressed with the way that the entire staff was really helpful and hard-working. I went there on a very hot and busy Saturday in July and was impressed with the whole experience. You will get some of the best pricing on the beach too. I walked past one place getting $20.99 for fish & chips and another at $15.99. I paid $9.49 at Long Sands and it was a bit more than I could eat. Good food, great price, amazing staff. I'll go back here next time I am visiting York Beach. read more

We grabbed something for breakfast or lunch for 4 days in a row. The folks that work there are very nice and the lady is super cheerful. We had the Breakfast Bulkie, fried egg, cheese and bacon on a grilled bulky for $3.99 - Excellent!!! They are open at 6:30am and the regulars come in one after the other for coffee at the picnic tables overlooking the ocean. We also tried the chicken salad which was very good. The Deli food is great. I have frequented this place for lunch over the years, but this summer the owners seem to have forgotten a key ingredient.....Customer service. The owners Don and Erika have always been great, but there have been a few things this summer that have not set well with me, and the final straw was when my wife asked Don a question and he snapped at her. While waiting there to place our order, we witnesses them be rude to other customers. Go figure when it was our turn, we also received the same treatment. Overall, the store is convenient and the food was good too. But if the owner reads this, I recommend they send these two to some customer service training. They are not doing you a favor. In need of a renovation as well as to hire more employees. I waited 40 minutes for one breakfast "Breakfast Bulkie". (Not worth the wait) because they have 1 cook!! Great place to stop by for a quick inexpensive breakfast. Walkable if you're staying near the north end of Long Sands beach. The breakfast bulkie was good, very normal which is nice after eating fried food and/or seafood for several days. The doughnuts were fresh and amazing. read more

Waited in line behind 1 other person, to order a sandwich. After almost 15 min, I asked the woman ahead of me if she had ordered yet. She said no... so, waited a few more minutes. People (3) behind the deli counter looked over several times then continued with whatever they were doing. I asked the woman in line if anyone had at least acknowledged her. She said no. After about 5 more minutes, I got the older heavy set woman with gray hair's attention and asked whether we were in the correct place to order. She said yes you are someone will be with you shortly. She didn't smile, apologize or convey an ounce of customer service. I can't believe I continued to wait even 2 more minutes before thinking , this is ridiculous! I left and walked further down to the Oceanside. They were so much friendlier, organized and it was much cleaner and their lobster roll was great!
