So, Loon Lodge is an iconic place to visit. The Pub has been a favorite spot for cozy atmosphere and decent burgers. We visited this past Saturday, Valentine's Day, expecting to enjoy some pub food and a beer on our way to a local event. We arrived at 4:30- well before the expected holiday rush. Uh oh!! No more pub type menu. Not just for Valentine's Day- but forever. It's over. So, that leaves you with dinner plate options ranging from $30 to $45. I had the shrimp Thai noodles and my husband had the mushroom risotto - which were the lower priced items on the menu. (We wanted simple fair, not a $45 plate, and did our best to pivot). The noodles were okay. The risotto was overly salty and looked as though it had sat under the heat light for a long time. Yikes. The friend we dined with ordered Chicken Parm. "Just okay" was the assessment. The meals all came with a small salad. Our server was great and the lodge is lovely but we went for the food. And it let us all down. A bowl of noodles. A bowl of rice. Two beers: $120.00. We won't be going back. Such a shame. read more

The ambiance and the dinner we had at Loon Lodge was fantastic. We started with what ended up being a mountain of mussels in a soothing coconut curry sauce and a shrimp scampi appetizer. Both of these were well done and worthy of licking the plate (technically, we used spoons to scrape up as much sauce and flavor as we could, but not far off!). For our main dishes, we had the pork saltimboca and the braised beef ragu. The fresh pappardelle mixed with the rich, filling beef ragu in such a way that is balanced the flavors, making it easy to go on auto pilot and devour the entire dish. The pork satlimboca was especially delicious. Every part of the dish complemented one another so well that you could put together the perfect bite. Though there were MANY great options for desserts (we gawked at them as they were delivered to other tables), we went with a classic: Maine Blueberry Pie. The crust was thicker than I had expected, but it was flavorful and well done. It cupped the blueberry filling and held strong as each bite was dipped into the vanilla ice cream. The additional fresh blueberries were a nice surprise, providing a "pop" of flavor alongside the filling and pie. All in all, the food was top notch, the ambiance was charmingly warm, and the location was easy to navigate. The service had a little slip toward the end of the meal, including a mixup of bills, but everything came out just fine and could not outshine the great meal we had. read more

The loon lodge dining experience surpassed all expectations! My husband and I split an order of the lamb chops and the mushroom risotto and both were fantastic. The lamb chops were seasoned and cooked to perfection, and came with an incredibly flavorful mint sauce that complemented the meat so well. The veggies were also delicious (likely coated in butter) and I appreciated the spices chosen to season the carrots. The risotto was creamy and the right texture. I appreciated the assortment of mushrooms, tomatoes, and spinach cooked into it. Finally we ended on a slice of key lime pie (also perfect)! And shared a warm chocolate bread pudding with his sister and her husband. (Pro tip: ask for vanilla ice cream with the chocolate bread pudding instead of the default chocolate). Service was also A+! The server made us feel really welcome and she did a great job accommodating our 4 year old nephew and 2 year old niece. read more

Had dinner last night, been a long time to get back here. The food was great. Problem was the service. We had the slug of a waiter. We had to ask for an extra plate when we share a salad. When the wine came he just poured it not asking one of us to taste it. As dinner came that was the last time we saw him until we were finished not even asking if we wanted more wine. The waiter came by and cleared or plates and asked us about dessert, we had to ask what they had he brought one menus and left again, thank god another waitress came by so we could ask questions. The waiter came by got our order and at that time we had to ask for more water since we were not asked about coffee or night cap. Got the bill and we left. Again nothing wrong with any of the food just the waiter Jason,which I hope no of you get. read more

Definitely give this place a try for dinner. The scenery and ambiance is unbelievable. They're right on the lake so you can even take your boat in if you prefer. This was our first time in Maine and after a tour of the Coast, my husband and I were ready for some fresh mountain air and beautiful views. The Loon Lodge provided the perfect location for hiking (very close to the Appalachian Trail and Bald Mountain) and incredible drives. The staff was extremely friendly and accommodating - we'd like to give a special thanks to Valentine, who went above and beyond during our entire stay (even helping coach my husband in his quest to learn French!). The Nordic room was cozy and offered us the best end to our day with a gorgeous view of the sun setting over Rangeley Lake. The Lodge is close to downtown Rangeley and many restaurants. The food offered in the downstairs restaurant is top notch. read more

We stayed in Rangeley for a week and Loon Lodge was right down the street for us so we knew we would stop by at some point to check it out. It wasn't bad, not bad at all. It has a very homey cabin atmosphere, a little dated but comfortable and cute. We weren't able to sit on the porch because it was full but we had a nice view of the lake anyhow (and it looked like it was about to storm anyhow). We started with the lobster beignets with remoulade as an appetizer. The beignets were delicious crispy balls of lobster happiness w/ a slightly creamy center. They actually had a decent amount of lobster in them. The remoulade had a lot of flavor but was quite a bit too salty for us. I had the crispy fried trout with corn, baby carrots and potatoes in a smoky tomato ravigote sauce. The fish came whole - which i wasn't expecting - i know lots of people cook and serve whole fish, I've just never eaten it myself. Thank goodness, it had been deboned (because I'd have no clue how to eat it!) and except for a few tiny soft pin bones- i could eat right through the fish. It was very good- the crispyness on the outside of the fish made the skin super tasty. The ravigote sauce was again a little too salty but otherwise the flavor was very pleasant and the baby vegetables delicious and tender. I started off with the loon lodge salad toasted pecans, danish onions and maple balsamic vinaigrette. It was very good, a basic salad. The dressing was not too maple-y or acidic. And I had a glass of the Mark West pinot noir- it was very good, smooth and velvety. J had a lamb tenderloin that was a special on the menu that night-came with spinach and potatoes that had a crispy (assuming fried or broiled) crust. J really liked the meal but said everything was overly salted. They were out of a lot of desserts for some reason and we ended up having the brownie sundae. It was good-i think the choc ganache and fresh whipped cream made it because the brownie was just ok. We were disappointed by the coffee. It was standard restaurant coffee. Blah. Why do restaurants always work so hard on their whole menu, including wines, beers and other beverage choices but when it comes to coffee, they just give up? It ruins the experience to finish everything with a shitty cup of coffee. I'm sorry, but it's true!! Our waitress was a cutie- really friendly and down to earth. She was also attentive and intuitive to our needs. Exactly what you want when you're going to a restaurant. Would absolutely return to Loon Lodge if I'm in the area again but I recommend they ease up on their salt use (we can always add more, but you can't take it away!) and invest in higher quality coffee. read more

We recently had dinner here while on vacation in the area. Knowing that Rangeley, Maine is not known as a culinary hot spot we kept our expectations in check going in. We arrived a little before our reservation and we found it a little odd that we had been pushed to such a late reservation given that the restaurant was not that busy. Regardless, we proceeded to indulge in a beverage at the bar while we waited for our table. Not the greatest beer list I've ever seen, but enough of a selection that everyone should be able to find something to wet their pallets. By the time we finished a round of drinks our table was ready, and so were we. All four of us in attendance are fairly critical eaters that seek out quality food on a regular basis. That being said, I am pleased to report that all 4 of us thought just about everything we tried was fantastic. We started with crab cakes and stuffed mushrooms and both dishes were great. I had a salmon dish that was fantastic. I'm often reluctant to get salmon on the east coast because I'm regularly disappointed by the farm raised stuff prepared in uninspiring ways. Loon lodge hit the spot. My wife had the stuffed haddock and that was another big win. Our friend ordered the Rib Eye and take it as high praise that he loved it because he is very particular about his meat. Cooked exactly as requested. The only disappointment of the night seemed very strange to us given the circumstances. My wife has been talking to our waitress about dessert for most of the night. She does this just about everywhere we go. Anyway, the waitress couldn't stop recommending the Crème brulee. Not sure if they screwed something up or what the deal was, but all four of us agreed it was probably the worst crème brulee we've ever had. No shell on it and very boring taste. Great place for dinner. The Loon Lodge is a rustic lakeside inn, one of the closest restaurants to the Saddleback Ski area. We were in the area for a ski vacation and had dinners in a few of the restaurants nearby; Loon Lodge was the best of the bunch. It was a little more expensive, but we thought it was worth it. Our party of 4 sat at the bar. The bartender/server, Valentine, was professional, friendly, prompt and efficient! We had a delicious spring salad of arugula, peas, bacon and radish, topped with homemade ranch dressing and a soft boiled egg. The salad was cool, crunchy and perfectly balanced! 2 of us split the stuffed chicken. The stuffing was made with pancetta and herbs. It was served on fresh, creamy mashed potatoes with a pan gravy! I came here for my Uncle's wedding this weekend looking for a good time with my family. The location is beautiful however the owner was so rude it ruined my experience. My cousin, who happens to be a deputy sheriff, was yelled at for simply having a couple of drinks and enjoying himself, as well as myself. I found it very unprofessional and disrespectful. 3 visits, Never again , never!! I have to LOL at some of the other negative comments Thank the Good Lord, someone had the guts to reference the owner of this establishment. I grew up in Rangeley, I am in my elder years. I love Rangeley. With that said, it is sad to see one of the premier views and old lodges adjacent to the lake turn into a pretentious and obnoxious experience for the consumer. The food is overpriced. Some of the wait staff are inexperienced (more to follow - but very nice)! A dinner with a "mandated reservation" should not take 45 minutes between a meager salad and main entree. The waitress was so nice and repeatedly apologetic. She was embarrassed and we felt the need to reassure her. She finally allowed that the owner was a "tyrant and a lunatic" and that she really needed the job, and please don't blame her!! I have never felt more sorry for someone in my life!! So, being an investigative sort of guy, I found an excuse to ask for the manager. I was introduced to the "owner". My mouth, and my wife's hit the floor! We were face to face with the very extremely rude person we had attempted to make a "mandatory" reservation a day prior, to be eventually seated in a dining room 2/3 empty, throughout our overpriced and mediocre dining experience. That is visit one. Being fair, everybody has an off day, so here comes visit 2. We arrive "too early" as described by the owner. We dared to arrive 15 min before reservation. Owner was annoyed we were there early, and told us "your reservation is for 6:30, you can wait here. THE DINING ROOM WAS EMPTY!!!! (Dinner service starts at 6:00) 3rd visit was very short, decided to go down and try the pub, instead of the pretentious "dining experience". Well, got a menu, viewed ridiculously overpriced appetizers, and attempted to order 2 drinks and an appetizer to share. After 30 minutes our order was still not taken, we left and will never, ever return! I'm not done, I attempted interaction with the owner. I can assure anyone, that the owner possesses less charm, wit, caring or humanity than any Gestapo guard at a WWII German concentration camp. My final analysis: this is an aptly named business. The name "Loon Lodge" does not (as many believe) refer to local wildlife, it most clearly refers to the rudest and most self-absorbed business owner that I have ever had the misfortune to encounter! Had a much different experience than the two people who bashed this beautiful property. We have been guests in the downstairs king room and slept very well and found this room to be very comfortable and spacious. Our water pressure in the shower was crazy strong and our window looked out to the pristine fresh water lake. I can't say enough about The bartender Rebecca who is personable, funny and on the reason we return every year. As you arrive , you'll feel the love of this property from the sidewalk lines with flowers to the green metal roof! Check it out today, just know that they don't give a breakfast to guests. expect coffee or tea only:-( Also, no television in room. There is one in the bar area. I've owned a house on Rangeley for years and had been coming to Loon Lodge in years past. After one of our favorite chef/host team left we found the fare okay but not great. We have other friends who own homes here as well and they've felt the same. Well, last night, because other establishments were booked, we decided to go there. In fact one of my best friends who was with us last night had gotten married there in 2003. It's a great place to have dinner and exactly what you would picture for a north woods/lakeside setting. For appetizers we ordered Ahi Tuna, potato and leek soup, crab cakes and chowder. My tuna was exceptional. It was seared, seasoned perfectly and served over seaweed salad. Very nice! The others raved about the other appetizers. My friend and his companion ordered the stuffed Haddock. Both of them couldn't believe the size of the portions and how great it tasted. They couldn't finish it. They raved about their meals. My wife had the stuffed meatballs. BTW, it's an appetizer, but you'd never know by looking at them. 2 very large meatballs served with Marinara sauce. Both my wife and I have high standards when it comes to food. She also raved about the meatballs. As I'm on a diet and am careful what I eat, I ordered the Lemon chicken and asked for steamed green beans. I usually don't get chicken at restaurants for a few reasons one of which is it's usually over cooked. Not this dish, it was cooked to perfection, grilled with a very nice lemon glaze. It was one of the best chicken dishes I've had. The desserts were exceptional. My wife ordered the mini pie (Blueberry) and our friend the Angel food cake with mixed berries. The service was on par with the food. We initially made a reservation to sit inside. When we got there our table was ready, but everyone saw how nice it was on the porch and we asked if it would be okay to sit there instead. No problem at all, they accommodated us and were happy to make the change. Our waitress was great. You could tell she likes her job and was attentive but not overly so. As we finished we all agreed we'd be coming back very soon and wondered why it had taken us so long. We began coming to Loon Lodge three years ago when we bought a camp in Rangeley. At first we just wanted to check out the rustic old lodge but then we were surprised to learn how good the food is. It's now a go-to place when we have visitors. It's a classic Maine lodge that's been well maintained and upgraded in recent years - there's a stone fireplace in the great room, exposed beams, wood everywhere, and the dining room overlooks Rangeley Lake. It's westward facing so there are beautiful sunsets. There's a dock and outdoor seating on the lawn so you can stroll around with a drink before your meal. The bar tender, Rebecca, is truly one of the nicest people we've met here. And of course the food is excellent and more creative than is common for this area. The staff is boring and awkward, but its Rangeley... I have only eaten in the bar area which is really small with 3 tables. We came to Loon Lodge for dinner on Good Friday 2021. Loon Lodge is a quintessential Maine Lake Lodge. Generations of people have been introduced to fine dining here. I used to live about 1/2 a mile away from Loon Lodge but had not been here for decades. The current management is holding to the high standards of yesteryear although the food is even better. The building is a classic log lodge and the staff at the restaurant is extremely nice. We had a fabulous meal in a great setting with a wonderful waitress. The appetizers were delicious and artfully presented. Both the crab stuffed mushrooms and the fried brussel sprouts had a lemon aioli and were both excellent. Enteés were all great, ribeye with mashed potatoes and brocolini, a fabulous burger, and french onion soup. All three of us thought the food was delicious and well presented. And for desert...? (as my cousin Wilbur used to ask when grilling us about our dining adventures) We shared a lemon cake with lemon curd and coconut. It was fabulous. I ate here twice while on vacation this summer. The first time was in the dining room (got rained out from being on the porch both times). Both times I had the brownie sundae for dessert and it was out of this world awesome and awesome and awesome. It was flavorful chocolate brownie with chocolate chips and topped off by vanilla ice cream, whipped cream and drizzled with chocolate sauce. So you can't go wrong there. Otherwise dinner was pretty good. The grilled NY sirloin was okay but uninspired. However the baby back ribs with a blueberry bbq sauce were excellent. Service was mediocre all in all though. If you're in Rangeley give the place a shot. I'd say it was a little higher than 3 stars due to the brownie sundae. read more

Had guests staying here at the lodge so we decided to eat here. Had reservations for 6:30 and was told that our table wasn't ready until 7. Not sure why that happened didn't seem all that busy but found out there was only 1 waitress and she was very slow! atmosphere was nice overlooking the water but that's about it. Food took a very long time to come and it wasn't great. I had the crab cake appetizer which came on a bed of spinach that was burnt to a crisp, Loon Lodge salad was good. My guests had the tuna which was a very small and thin piece and very overcooked and rubbery. Not sushi style like they said. My guests liked their room clean and neat but no frills. No TV anywhere or radio. No wifi at all. Nice place to stay if you want to get away from everything and have no contact with the outside world. Not sure if they'll stay here again. read more

I'm not accustomed to giving 2 stars, as I search Yelp like many of you do before choosing where to eat or lodge. This review is for my opinion on dinner at their pub, not the lodge itself. I arrived in Rangeley mid-week 5pm, at one of the BEST B&B's I've ever experienced (Highland Heath House B&B...definitely check out their reviews on TripAdvisor) & wanted a nice place to eat before returning to the B&B to catch sunset on the deck. Two restaurants were suggested...this one which was closest & the Fork In The Air Bistro. I chose Loon Lodge b/c of the lakeside view, fare offered & proximity to the B&B. I arrived just after 6p & only saw one table seated on the back patio/deck. I asked the host if I could have a seat outside to enjoy the view & he said it's by reservation only. I asked if I could make a reservation & he asked, "For what time?". I said laughing, "I'm here now, how about now?". I was a little surprised b/c the place was nearly empty...but, perhaps they were expecting a large party to come in at 7. He left me in the beautiful leather fireside seating area for a few minutes, came back, & took me to my table. I noticed all the clear plastic rain tarps around the deck were open, lake breeze blowing through, expect mine in the front left corner. I had to find him & request it be unzipped & rolled which he did promptly. For some reason, he was the host seating tables & my waiter, so he wasn't readily available to me as the waitress was to the other tables on the deck. I ordered the 10oz Filet Mignon cooked medium ($43) with potatoes fingerlings & asparagus along with a glass of New Zealand Pinot Noir ($9). Along with asking for the fillet to be cooked medium (pink throughout) I also told him I prefer low fat & wanted everything cooked as healthy as possible. He assured me they would use olive oil & not butter. It took approximately 25 min but I was fine waiting w/the wine & 2 pieces of delicious warm bread. When it was tabled, (see pics!) I was shocked...a blackened disc w/a blob of butter on top, greasy potatoes & very hard/crunchy cold asparagus. I was starving, so I cut a piece & gave it a try but it was beyond well done & dry. He didn't return to check on me, so I got up to find him. I told him & showed him that the fillet was way overcooked, dry w/hard edges. He apologized, took it away & asked if I wanted them to fire another. I declined. If it took another 1/2 hour I'd miss the sunset view on top of the mountain. I asked him to bring a bowl of the Haddock Chowder & more bread. I could survive on carbs even if the soup was mediocre. Surprisingly, it was absolutely delicious!!! It would get 5 stars. The flavors blended perfectly & it was more like soup than a thick creamy chowder. Perfect for a summer evening meal. In my opinion, I'd say, save your money on the big ticket entrees. What I saw at other tables (this is only my opinion) aren't worth $25-$50 price. Stop in for a glass of wine, soup, bread & you'll be happy you did. I do want to mention that the view, while on the lake, is only partial. There are trees along the shoreline that obstruct full views. It is a beautiful setting though & has access by boat if you're out on the lake. Perhaps the cook was just having an off night with the steaks but I wondered what Chef Ramsey would have said if food like that came out of his kitchen. Nothing good would have come of it, expect maybe changing the order to a delicious bowl of soup! read more

My husband and I ate at Loon Lodge for dinner in late October 2013. We didn't make reservations and we had to sit in the bar which wasn't a problem for us. We got the Caesar salad, French onion soup, seared tuna and crab cakes. All were very good and the atmosphere was cozy. The restaurant isn't open Sun-Tue in the off season. Great place. The view and closeness to the lake is fantastic. I loved the wooden interior of the lodge and the staff were fun and friendly. Dinner was also amazing if a little pricey. Our room was $150 a night which again is a tiny bit pricey for Rangeley hence 4 stars instead of 5 but I will definitely stay here again for longer. What a terrible experience. Expecting the full mountains of Maine experience, but getting the hotel 6 experience. Cramped and uncomfortable rooms- food was marginal at best and when this was questioned, the owner, and Indian woman, basically told us that her chef was the best in Maine and if we didn't like it... go somewhere else. Don't waste your $$$ here. None deserves to pay good money to be treated badly. read more
