The donkeys take children for short trips along the beach they work in groups of about 6 and they all their names on their harnesses. My son selected to ride on William who was the cutest of the bunch but they all they all looked sweet. All the donkeys were well behaved and are clearly used been around children all the time. The donkeys keepers were great too they stopped during the ride to allow me to take photograph and made sure the donkeys behaved. My son adored going along the sand on the donkey just as I had done all those years ago. The donkey rides are great fun for kids I highly recommend them if your taking a trip to Scarborough over the summer. The kite was quite fancy, all black and skeletons, but it wouldn't lift, and the time taken for it to fall to pieces was longer than my 2 year old mind could tolerate. It was fantastically cold and very windy. Scarborough of course attracted noted playwright Alan Ayckbourn for no other reason than he liked the seaside when he was little.

The soft play area is the normal maze of obstacles, slides, gates and a ball pool. It occupies the end of the room and the rest of the space is taken up with the cafe which is where the parents sit. The layout means that it is next to impossible for kids to escape the soft play area unnoticed which makes it a more relaxed place than some others. The cafe is basic but good and serves the sorts of things that kids will eat (at least it serves the sorts of things that my kids eat.) They also do a decent cappuccino. There is an activity room which I think can be hired for childrens' parties. The staff are friendly and efficient.

The changing facilities are good (why can't all swimming pools have decent-sized family changing cubicles?) and the prices quite reasonable. There will be bigger and more exciting swimming pools up and down the country I'm sure, but for what it is this particular swimming pool cannot be faulted. Our two kids (now aged 3 and 5) love it.

There are lots of activities to enjoy around the site of this former hunting lodge to Danby Castle. There is a nice short walking trail that takes you around the grounds with several attractions along the way. The Danby Den playground is excellent and novel. The water bailiff audio guide was an interesting take. The dragon. The mud kitchen. The zip line. All excellent fun for the young ones. We crossed the river Esk and walked up to Danby Castle. A lovely stroll across the moors without being too long or strenuous.  Crow Wood is adjacent to the parking lot and has the bird watching hut and a few other notable attractions around the loop. There is a cafe serving hot drinks and snacks that was most welcome. In the same area there is an interactive nature exhibit intended for kids to learn about the environment. Its all really well done and we wished we had come here when our lad were a nipper. Entry is free but paring has a small fee. Parking lot is pretty big and we had no problem finding a spot. It was an off-season weekday and was pretty quiet. I can imagine summer weekends this place would be teeming with families. Great fun and highly recommended if you are in the area.

The equipment there is good and there's an enclosed 5-a-side astroturf-type pitch just behind the playground. Parking is quite convenient too (down a little side lane just before the church as you approach from Pickering). It's often quiet there and our kids have had some happy times running around burning off some energy when we've been on holiday in the area. A hidden gem!
