Los 36 Billares is a very old and traditional Argentinean restaurant and pool hall. It is over 100 years old and was founded in 1894. It is not a fancy place, but it is well maintained and is popular among locals. They have 11 pool tables to enjoy. I did not play any billiards, but I tried a bunch of food here. I went the traditional route and chose some Argentinean classics: locro, fugazzetta, and empanadas. Everything was filling and high quality with very reasonable prices. If you're looking for a solid local spot, this one delivers. Unlike Cafe Tortoni, this place is not touristy. And the space is huge as well and is perfect for a large group. read more

Driving around BA on a Sunday and ended up at 36 Billares for lunch. The building and billiard hall which is located downstairs has been around since 1894. There are a lot of historical buildings that date back to the 1800's. I would have liked to have posted a picture of the homemade gnocchis we ate but unfortunately we came hungry and with everything that was going on I forgot. The billiards hall downstairs holds professional championships. I took no pictures at the hall since there were some serious games going on. The food and the service were very good. And the waitress greeted us with a kiss on the cheeks, very common here. In the states we shake hands, here you get a peck on the cheek. Only downside and it had absolutely nothing to do with the restaurant, was a manifestation of protests which aside from being peaceful was sort of a pain for those who needed to move around the main parts of the city. Service is swift and friendly and if a pizzeria can be elegant, this one pulls it off. Points off the bat for these being brought to the table right after ordering pizza - chili flakes, salt, oregano. Fugazzeta rellena - My now regular "go to" of local pizza fare, this one is offered up in the "stuffed" version (it's also available in the non-stuffed, but only as a whole pie). The two layers of dough encase slices of ham, a lightly tangy tomato sauce, and "queso cremoso", which is a soft, creamy cheese that's quite popular here, akin to something like port salut. Then the whole thing is topped with mozzarella, because, hey, cheese and all that, and strewn with a good handful of onions, and then fired up until lightly charred. One of the better versions I've had! And an anchovy slice, which, as is typical here, comes without cheese - but a great way to try the tomato sauce. And the sauce is pretty good. As mentioned above, it's tangy, it could use a little more seasoning - some garlic and salt come to mind. Given the size of the slice, the single wan anchovy is, while traditional, a little too minimal. But I'd go back for the fugazzetta! read more

During my time in Buenos Aires, I've been to many cafes for my morning cafe con leche, and 36 Billares is one of my favorites. It's centrally located, spacious, and elegant in the old style of the traditional coffee houses with inlaid wood designs on the wall. It strikes me as less touristy than other cafes in Buenos Aires (such as Tortoni), with most if not all patrons locals who know the place well. The coffee is excellent as are the different pastries (e.g., medialunas) and the service is attentive. read more
