The salsa was brought out chilled in a carafe, it was a bit hard to pour out due it being cold, but it was delicious and spicy just how l like it. The food tasted fresh and authentic. The decor was a bit dated but also gives really a laid back and authentic feel. The house margarita was not that great...I only had one. Overall I'd give this place an 7.5/10. Oh. My. Gosh. If you don't eat here, you are missing out terribly! It's a hole-in-the-wall spot, but absolutely worth a stop. We started with a cheese dip with Serrano peppers and a CHUNKY guacamole. You can tell the guac is made in house and the peppers were cut fresh. We split the house fajitas which were as good as expected with a toppings plate, rice, and beans. Their tamales were different - they are served with what can best be described as a chili on top, but boy howdy were they good! What a great find! Hwy 75 was dead stop so we decided to reroute down hwy 23, thank goodness we did. For a Friday night the staff was bustling like no tomorrow. But the food came out quick, drinks were cold and everyone was in great spirits. We definitely will come back if our travels take us through this little town again. This restaurant is right on Highway 42 in McDonough. It's in an older (1950s vintage) building right on the highway. On the inside, which is modest, you can converse in private in a booth or be in a large dining room, which is good on Saturday nights when they have Karaoke. Los Aviña has become our family's place to go for great Mexican food, good, congenial service, and a good time, especially on a Saturday night. Their food portions are quite large. Most entrees are more than you will finish, and you'll end up taking home some of their delicious food. Their cocktails are imaginative and more than adequate. Their Texas Margarita is a swimming pool of tequila. My favorite food there is the shrimp, but I haven't had anything to eat in Los Aviña that wasn't prime eating. I would and do highly recommend that you stop at Los Aviña for lunch or dinner, if you get the chance. Because of an anticipated road widening of Highway 42/US 23, they are going to be losing their present location, so they are looking for a new location now. But, regardless of where they are located at any one point in time, guaranteed good food and drink are to be had there, as well as a great good time during Karaoke nights on Saturdays. read more

This edit to my original review was made a year ago and apparently never posted for some reason, so I'm trying again. It took them two years to pester me, though, so I'm sure they'll understand the delay. Here it is: I wrote my review two (now three) years ago. Google notified me of their Yelp page because my phone tracked me there, and after a 30 minute wait in an empty restaurant, I ate my $6 grease with a side of quesadilla and then double-checked the address, confirmed it with photos of the place, and left my review. All while still sitting at my table. I mentioned a sushi place "right next door" being preferable to spending $4 on 2oz of old queso dip, but according to an employee who contacted me privately, there was no sushi next door two years later. When I didn't delete my review, the super professional owner finally replied, "We don't have a sushi restaurant anywhere near Los Aviña. Just saying." Now a sushi bar has been six minutes away from Los Aviña for years, and sushi places come and go all the time, and you'd think they would dispute the prices if I was really mistaken, but my off-handed comment definitely invalidated my review. So I'm sorry, Los Aviña, I exaggerated about where sushi was in relation to your slow and over-priced food. My bad. read more

This place could have been a 3-star but I waited at least 20 minutes to get my to-go order, which i had ordered ahead of time... like 40 minutes ahead of time, and i was told 35 minutes. This was on a Wednesday and it didn't seem like they were that packed. Mexican is one of my favorite foods and i can't say this place was as good as some other places I have tried. Plus service doesn't seem great. The place is a little dumpy inside. I ordered chicken quesadillas and they were... mehhhhh. My hubs ordered 3 carne asada tacos and they were just okay. I have been going to Los Avina with my family since I was in high school. It'll soon be well over 10 years and I still love this place. My dad originally found it and although they are a small family owned restarting, their food doesn't lack flavor or taste. I order it a good bit from UberEats, but we used to eat inside all the time. The staff is so sweet and if they make a mistake, they'll do the best to rectify it. I normally get either the beef and cheese dip, fajitas nachos, la Parilla dip, and their rice and beans. So glad we went with our gut, and had we brought the food home before devouring it in the car, I would've posted pictures! My fiancé had the Tacos al Carbon & Carnita Tacos. The chicken in the quesadilla was delicious and REAL- the most important part. The nachos were loaded with their queso cheese which was a surprise that I loved every second of! They also threw in their chips & homemade salsa. And not just a small side order of chips & salsa- a bag the size of those "family sized" bags you'd find in the grocery store and salsa just as big as what you'd buy at a grocery store as well. We're not done eating... Lastly, we figured, what the heck! If we're gonna go big, let's go all the way. So we ordered the churros with vanilla ice cream. Oh my god... warm churros with soft vanilla ice cream is the way to my heart! These couldn't be more delicious! One had a raspberry filling while the other was a regular cream cheese-like filling. We housed them. We'd love to hit this place up again once we stop beating ourselves up over how guilty we feel... but SO worth it! read more

First visit. Good overall. The best components (for me) were the enchilada and the taco shell (fried flour tortilla, not corn, but my husband's least favorite part for the same reason). This was the first time I visited this restaurant and I was not disappointed by the food. It was very authentic Mexican flavors and reasonably priced.The Staff were very friendly and came back a few times to check on us. It is in a out of the way area if you're not from McDonough but worth the drive. My only concern was the slowness of the services. We waited over 10 minutes before the final check in this wouldn't be out of except for there were only six patrons in the restaurant but for staff members. However, I would/will be returning. I'm so confused, most of the reviews are awesome saying how good and tasteful the food is, which is why I came here but that did not hold up at all. Firstly, all of the staff were super nice and respectful. I recently moved to Mcdonough and I have been trying to find an authentic tasting mexican restaurant that reminds me of an awesome restaurant back home. I first ordered a small cheese dip to pair with the chips & salsa, the cheese dip was rather runny and lacking that flavorful taste i'm used to. I'm a vegetarian so I always order 2 Bean Burritos with Rice & Beans as my entrée at any mexican restaurant. When the order came out, the taste of the food was non-existent and the beans inside of the burritos were cold and the beans on the side were cold as well. I let the server know the food was cold... hoping that something went wrong in the kitchen and that they'd remake the order and i'd be super pleased (because as I stated in the beginning, I've seen so many reviews saying how tasteful the food is). A few minutes later and my food is brought out... I notice that the same bites I took beforehand were still present on the plate. All they did was warm it up. Super disappointed, I did not even attempt to eat anything. I asked my server for the check and she asked if I would like a togo box... I chuckled and responded "No" (I wouldn't give that food to anyone whom I hold close to my heart.) The server asked me if there was something wrong and I simply told her that I didn't like the taste of the food, she discounted my ticket 50%. Before leaving I overheard a conversation of another guest with her younger daughter at a nearby table, the daughter said something about the temperature of the food and the mother was asking the daughter if she wanted it to be warmed up more... Seems like the kitchen is slacking tonight. SN: To maintain respect, I really wish I could say the name of my server instead of referring to her as "the server" but unfortunately their was no introduction given by the server upon coming to my table, just a "ready to order?". She was an elderly woman who was super nice though. I'm giving this experience 4 out of 5 stars simply because the staff was superb. They worked as a team and several members of the staff stopped by my table, as well as every other table, as they walked past, just to make sure I didn't need anything while in their establishment. Until I was blatantly overcharged for an item--which was eventually corrected--but only after a lengthy conversation with my server that bordered on altercation. When I inquired about the bill, I was told that my small lunch portion of veggie fajitas with rice and two tortillas was not the advertised $6.95, but $9.99. According to the server, omitting meat somehow made my meal $3.05 (43%) more expensive. I've never in my life been charged extra to omit meat from a dish. I noted that even the steak lunch fajitas were only $7.95--over $2.05 more than they were attempting to charge me for onion and peppers. This was eventually corrected, but left a bad taste in my mouth. The regular portion of vegetable fajitas is $10.95--which I gladly would have paid for had I received it instead. Especially since it's over 50% larger, includes three tortillas instead of 2, along with a side of guacamole, sour cream, lettuce, tomatoes, and shredded cheese--all not included in the lunch. And beware, menu is dishonest. The "Vegetarian" options on the menu are not vegetarian, because I was told by the server that the beans are cooked with pork. Pork is not vegetarian. They are mostly high school kids, and several of them treat working at Los Avina as their social time. Waitresses yell to their friends across the restaurant and fight with their boyfriends at the bar. They bicker with one another over who has to clean up tables. Eight of us ate here after being discouraged by a long wait at La Parilla. This restaurant is a little out of the way, but definitely worth the drive. Veggie fajitas were as good as they get. Cheese quesadillas were very good, made with crema, so a little runny. Sauces were excellent. The chips and salsa were great, and the staff refilled them as fast as we ate them (we arrived late and pretty hungry). Excellent margaritas. Love this place! Family owned and operated and it shows in the quality of the food and service. Both are excellent. My wife and I come here at least once a month and we're never disappointed. I usually get the Burrito Tipico. It's a little spicy but quite tasty. It's got chunks of pork in a cheesy pepper sauce with grilled peppers and onions. Excellent. My wife is a vegetarian and usually gets bean burritos with rice. She claims it's the best rice she's ever had. Went to find our server and was told there were still 2 more orders in front of ours. What??? We decided to leave. So far, we'd rec'd nothing more than the typical basket of chips & salsa plus water. Note we ate approximately half the basket of chips waiting on the food - which never came. They charged us $6.68 for the chips. Not an apology, nothing. Plus had to wait almost 5 minutes to pay this ridiculous bill because the only girl that could give us a bill was in the bathroom. Oh man. What a disaster. Staff rude and horribly slow.
