I've even made my own from scratch with very good results. But I must say: The Walrus blew my mind. Their presentation is absolutely fantastic. The cakes are meaty, just-right-crispy and delicious and they are served perched on a bed of gorgeous greens. The greens are lightly dressed in a lovely vinaigrette and topped with perfectly roasted veggies and feta. YUM! We also ordered the artichoke and spinach dip. Delicious. AND served with plenty of yummy crostini for dipping. So many places skimp on the dippers, and it's always annoying. Not so at The Walrus. Service was prompt, friendly, attentive and efficient. If I'm ever back in Bismarck, I'll be campaigning for a return visit. Until then, I'll be dreaming about those crab cakes.

There is a difference between farm raised and wild caught that can be easily tasted. It was disappointing but they did take it off the ticket. For the filet mignon, it was listed as bacon wrapped. The bacon was not crisp but rather dull in color. I ordered it with coleslaw which was a mistake. The sweet potato was served whole and uncut. I had to ask for the butter for it. The manager did apologize for the salmon not being to the satisfaction of being grilled and that the menu needed to changed to it being broiled.

The restaurant felt cozy and still had plenty of diners despite the cold. I had the beet salad with goat cheese and pecans, and the bison braised short ribs. Both were excellent. I make a similar beet dish at home, so it was nice to have something simple, comforting, and genuinely delicious -- it felt like eating at home. The beef was incredibly tender and fell apart easily with just my fork. I also had the vanilla crème brûlée for dessert. It was pretty good, but it was cold, and I usually prefer it a little warm and smoother. Not quite the cozy dessert I was hoping for.
