I've written and deleted a review about 10 times now. I don't like bashing restaurants, especially small town ones. But this has been going on for months now and it's just awful. We used to eat here all the time as there isn't much in Petersburg, but I think we are going to stop eating here until they get better management or something. I used to get the Fajitas Mexicana all the time, I love queso fresco and poblanos. It was soooo good! The last couple times I got that particular dish, they either didn't cut the steak into strips, left off the queso fresco and put cheese sauce on it, or gave me completely the wrong dish. I have gradually tried to order easier or more standard dishes, thinking maybe it was just going to take them a bit to get back on track, but definitely not. This is plain 'ol Steak Fajitas. The steak has no flavor and is super dry, the green bell peppers are not even remotely close to being cooked, they are straight up raw. And who puts huge half slices of tomatoes in fajitas?? I asked for no pico because I can't really eat tomatoes too. I guess I'm sort of glad I got the Quesadilla Queso too, although it could've been microwaved for how it tasted. Super squishy and grease soaked into the tortilla. Definitely not cooked on a griddle. We also ordered Queso Dip for our chips and didn't get any chips. A couple times we've received completely the wrong order. Really need Los Rancheros to step up!!! This is horrible!! read more

Oh boy. This is my second time coming here and I didn't really like it the first time but I really wanted to give it another shot. First off, the chips, salsa, and queso were pretty good. Not great. We both got chimichangas and they were... meh. The beef was pretty blah, not much lettuce included with it. Rice tasted kind of weird, hard to explain. Beans were beans. I really like the decor of the restaurant, the colors and my 4 month old son LOVED the big pictures on the walls. Now the service, oh boy again. Slow, not too slow where it makes you want to go back in the kitchen yourself but it's slow enough. The guy was very awkward and I could tell he didn't want to be there. Here is the awkward part. I was putting my son in his car seat and he walked up as I sat him in there asked if we needed boxes, no. Then he proceeded to stand and stare at us until I got him strapped into his car seat and gave him my credit card. If you have had a child you know it can be a hassle to strap them into a carseat, so it wasn't a short amount of time he stood there staring at me. Will I be back? Probably not. I did expect to find a Mexican restaurant in the middle of Illinois but here we are. The appetizer of Street Corn was it what I expected. It was more like a street corn casserole. It tasted close to how it should have but there was far too much cream to it. The entree of Flag Enchiladas was great! I would 100% recommend that. The cocktails and drinks were ordered were good. I have been to this restaurant a few times but the most recent time I went(Saturday) was terrible.When we got there for my birthday everyone but two of us have steak in our food. The service was decent but the only thing that threw me to think that the steam was old was because, Everybody who got steak got what was assumed to be food poisoning. This is because the two people who didn't get steak,didn't get sick.We only think it is food poisoning because it was one of the specials and most restaurants use special meals to try and get rid of older food. I am guessing that the steak was simply just too old. My wife and I paid a visit to Los Rancheros while we were staying in Petersburg on Thanksgiving weekend. We were told by the staff at the lodge that it was recently opened and the food was "fantastic". (If you've ever been to Petersburg, you'll soon realize why that's not an incredibly hard goal to reach.). We had just driven into town during a rather inconvenient snowstorm, so we were ready for dinner, drinks, and some relaxation. We arrived at the restaurant a little after 6:00 and were seated immediately. The establishment is bigger inside than it looks outside, and there are several dining areas. The décor feels authentic without feeling kitschy, and it's not so overdone that you feel like you're forced into feeling like you're in Mexico. It was a busy night, so we were seated at a table in the bar. Our server was quick to greet us, provide us with a basket of chips and salsa, and take our drink orders. The menu is pretty extensive (as it is with most Mexican restaurants), with traditional favorites and, of course, a few specialty items. The food came out amazingly fast. So fast, in fact, that we hadn't even finished our basket of chips. The temperature of the food was hot, the presentation perfect, and tasted great. Some Mexican restaurants skimp on the flavor in favor of turning the food out faster and some overcompensate with the seasonings. Our dinners were seasoned just right with the right spice level and decent quantities of food. Of course, my wife insisted that I have some Flan....and even though I was completely full I had no choice but to indulge...and it was FANTASTIC. All of the staff was constantly in motion, taking care of customers, refilling chips or drinks, and taking care of tables in order to keep the restaurant clean and welcoming. The entire experience was great, from beginning to end. The staff was very friendly and knowledgeable, the menu options varied, and the atmosphere very genuine. I've been here quite a few times. Last two were terrible. We were the only guests in the restaurant, made it through an entire meal and never received offers for drink refills or chip refills. There were three servers on staff, all sitting at the bar conversing as we sat waiting. The lady that was cleaning tables offered her help before our server ever returned to the table. This is a newer location of a Mexican chain that has several locations in central IL. Considering the location, there are limited dining options nearby, so it's near the top for now. It had that bright and peppy feeling of a renovated new business. There were several nice murals throughout the restaurant and nice decor in general. There's a host stand when you walk in, two dining rooms maybe 3, and a separate bar area with an island bar. The dining area had rustic wooden tables and carved wooden chairs. We had a larger group and they were able to accommodate us with a reservation placed the day of. Our server was friendly and quick, though we had to ask for drinks a couple times. Being used to authentic Mexican taquerias, the food was more like an Americanized tex-mex version, but it was good overall. Guacamole came out quickly and was a generous portion with a pico de gallo mix of diced onion and tomato on the side. I had the "Tijuana Philly" which was chopped steak with peppers and onions served on corn tortillas. The server insisted these weren't tacos, which was sort of funny. Meat + tortilla = taco in my book. I was just glad they had corn tortillas, though they did sort of fall apart, double tortillas would have worked better. The dish was tasty enough, though the steak wasn't tender or marinated as advertised. I'd probably try something different from the extensive menu next time like the carnitas. Overall i'd return and try some of the different specialties, a good option for groups, kids, or just dinner for two in Petersburg. read more

This restaurant has been better. We had a group of about nine for lunch. I think everyone was fairly happy with the meals, and so was I. The chips were good and warm, I liked those a lot, it reminded me of making them at home. I had enchiladas, which were about the same as the old standby restaurants here in Arizona. The dish didn't have refried beans, or the Spanish rice, which was OK with me. I like the decor and the the atmosphere is pleasant and not over the top. It's a nice place to find in Petersburg. I would certainly return to this restaurant in Petersburg. read more

My husband and I just had a wonderful meal at Los Rancheros! The only negative was trying to find the correct entrance door. They really need to light it up and make it obvious that they want you to use the side door off of the parking lot. Once we made it inside everything else was superb. The chips were fresh and warm, the salsa was decent, and the margaritas were good. Our waitress, Erin, was extremely pleasant; we were very impressed with her. She was very courteous and helpful when my husband requested a specially made burrito that did not exist on the menu....and it even came out correct. It was AMAZING! Petersburg Los Rancheros is definitely not doing well...The last time I was there, the salsa was so watered down it wouldn't even stick to the chip. I ordered my favorite, Ceviche Fresco, and it came out with a very small portion of ceviche, three small cucumber chips and three small avocado wedges. And, although the portion is now much smaller, the price is still the same...this should, now, be considered an appetizer, when it used to be a meal. Very disappointed!!! read more

The food was okay at best. My drink was pretty good i got the blazing berry peach sangria. I mean i wouldnt say there was an ounce of peach in it but it was still good. We did get our orders pretty fast but the reason im giving a low rating is when we were finihed we asked for our ticket. 10 minutes went by he came and cleared our plates but we still didnt have our ticket figured they were busy so we waited another 10. Our group was fairly annoyed and we had small children that were getting tired of sitting there they were ready to go home. So we get up to find someone and in total it took us almost 45 minutes just to get our ticket so we could pay and leave. Thats 45 minutes of kids crying and what could have been a whole other group for that person to serve and make more money. I may go back but this experience was rather annoying. read more

I haven't been there in quite a while. Stopped by to get a carry out salad the other night. Service was great. Salad was awful. Why, oh why is there NO place to get a FRESH salad in menard county??? Why is it too much for restaurants to have fresh greens, real cream creamer, real 100% dairy butter? No one in menard county serves anything but gross anemic iceberg lettuce. The shrimp salad from Los was once pretty good. The one I had the other night was disgusting. The lettuce was shredded iceberg. It was limp and gross. I'll save my money from now on. read more

Unbelievable I just came in to have dinner and tried to pay 10 dollars cash and the remainder on my credit card, this blew the waitress mind... She charged my card twice apparently she didn't understand what was said to her, I explained I wanted cash back for the extra money they charged me, she told me it was returned on my card and that if when the money came on my card I would be bringing it back in, I explained I was from out of town,I'm a city gal and I also know Mexican food since I am Mexican myself, this is NOTHING like authentic food!! The first mistake was when the waitress brought the wrong drinks. I will never be back and I am really considering opening up my own establishment so you guys can taste actual AUTHENTIC Mexican food, I didn't know I was going to a classier Taco Bell since that is what I ate... Wow...this place is really on a downward slide. Had hoped it had improved but it appears to be on life support at this point. I was right...the Margaritas are pre-made in a dispenser in the bar...could not taste any Tequila AT ALL. Bought a shot to add for $6...so a $12 drink...$4 Buds and $8 Sangria...crazy. My $11 burrito came with rice only...what about the BEANS! Are beans that expensive? Thought most dinners came with both for $11. Its not like I ordered "a taco" for $3. Both rounds of shots of Tequila finished that bottle...barely got a full shot either time. Had to switch because I got the last drop both times. But what stood out most was the "very very white kids" - high school age - taking orders and bussing food and drinks! What happened to all the Mexicans that used to run this place? We have been to Los Rancheros several times and have always had a good experience, the food and service is always good. Having received a gift certificate for Christmas we went there tonight, handed over the gift card and was told Jose was taking care of it for us. I few minutes later the waitress returned and told us the card had no money on it and gave us our bill. I looked at her stunned and told her it should have $50 on it. She told me no and walked away. Being very embarrassed I put cash on the table with the bill and we left. I texted my daughter telling her what happened. She had the receipt where she had paid in cash. She insisted I return to the restaurant right away with the receipt and the empty gift card. She brought me the receipt and I did return to the restaurant, explained the situation to Jose (Manager) explaining my earlier experience as an embarrassing moment. He later returned handed me a receipt and card telling me it had been activated with a I'm sorry that happened. We have all experienced bad experiences at a restaurant at one time or another and usually the restaurant manager will offer free dessert, a discount of some sort. But apparently at Los Rancheros, they feel confident enough with their business that they do not need to make it right with their customers. read more
