The hype is real! My sister has been telling about this place for YEARS and I never got around to trying it out till now. I came on a Saturday afternoon and it wasn't crowded at all, but there was a steady stream of hungry people coming in and out on the cold and snowy day. These tacos are on the pricey side for sure, but everything is expensive in NY and their tacos are legit. You order at the cashier and then bring your ticket up where they'll ask you which of their available toppings you'd like (just say con todos and get it all!) and whether you want flour or corn tortillas (both of which are great options, but I usually opt for corn tortillas). They make the tacos and then you're free to add lime, pico, or their salsas from their station on the side. The salsas aren't too spicy and have a nice kick to them and you can help yourself to radish too. For sure one of the best tacos I've eaten, specifically the adobada. I also had the carne asada and tried nopales, but I probably wouldn't get it again since it didn't really have a distinct taste to it. I'd stick with the adobada since it was the most tender and flavorful and also get a carne asada if you want to change up the flavor profile. These tacos are unmatched. 100% the BEST ones I've ever had. The energy in there is a little chaotic and overwhelming when at its peak business but the food is worth it. The grilled catcus is delicious and a really unique offering that I've never seen anywhere else, however, the carne asada was the star of the show. Simple, authentic, and incredibly flavorful. As someone from out of town, the setup was a bit of a culture shock. Everyone stands and eats, which normally wouldn't be an issue, but coming straight off a bus with luggage and a child, it was a little tough in that moment. That said, this is more about timing and circumstance than the place itself. If it were summertime or if we weren't traveling, standing wouldn't have bothered me at all. What I loved most is how efficiently everything runs while still feeling personal. Love this location! The line gets long at peak hours but usually not quite as long as some of the other spots. Like every Los Tacos No 1, it's a little chaotic but it's organized chaos. Here's the process in a nutshell: You pay at the cashier, get your ticket, hand ticket to guy behind counter, tell him how you want your tacos (flour or corn tortilla? Con todos?) and while they make the tacos, start preparing all the extras you want to enjoy your tacos with like limes, radishes, pico de gallo, and an array of hot sauces. At some point your taco maker will find you, and lock eyes with you, and say TO STAY OR TO GO? Grab your tacos and then it's TACO TIME. Don't forget to get a Mexican coke or agua fresca to wash these bad boys down with. The Adobada (marinated pork with pineapple) tacos on corn tortillas are my absolute favorite as they are pretty much Al Pastor style. I also love the breakfast burritos. I only had two, but they are smaller than you'd expect and so addictive that I'd recommend ordering at least one or two extra. The meats were tender, flavorful, and perfectly seasoned. Definitely grab the green sauce as well, it adds so much flavor without being spicy. I actually think this location tasted better than the popular Chelsea Market one, but that's just my opinion. While it is located at the ground level of a (relatively) new skyscraper, Los Tacos No. 1 has worked hard to make its space look similar to its other locations such as the one in Soho. This includes large signage and a relatively clean and simple decor (largely focused on the color white). If you're going at lunch time, expect a line that can be long enough to go outside the restaurant and down the block. That said, the line moves very quickly. The day I went I think there were easily 15-ish people in front of me and I think my wait was less than 10 minutes. Once you get to the cashier, you order (pay attention to the options on the menus on the walls). You pay, get a ticket and walk down to the other end of the counter to wait for your server to call you. You confirm your order, they prepare it and you're good to go. There's a "fixings" bar where you can grab some salsa, hot sauce and peppers to go with your meal. The tacos here are made on either flour or corn tortillas. These are about three to four bites worth (or just one giant bite if you want to wolf it down). I ordered the chicken and cactus tacos. The chicken was fantastic, with tons of flavor. As you'd expect, the cactus one was a lot lighter in flavor, but it gives you a chance to have your veggies and your tacos too! The staff at Los Tacos is quick and efficient. They're not super friendly, but that's because they're too busy trying to get through orders put in by a virtual army of customers. Being from Texas, I would never have chosen to eat Mexican food in NYC, but I'm glad we gave it a try because it did NOT disappoint in the least! I had the especial quesadilla, which is a fried quesadilla. It kind of looks like a split open empanada, and I hadn't had one like this in a very long time, so I couldn't pass it up. I added carne asada and had it con todo, so it came with cilantro, onion, and guacamole. I could have eaten it without salsa, it was that good and packed with flavor. But that roasted red salsa is divine, and they also have chopped radishes and roasted chiles. I also had the jamaica to drink, and it was great. Not too sweet. I tried the chicken taco too and that was really tasty. My only gripe is the lack of restroom and seating. They definitely aren't encouraging people to hang out here.
