I had what he had, which is to say we had top shelf margaritas. They were STRONG but GOOD. I think I had two of them. I say 'think" because hell if I can remember. First and last time we will visit. While our waiter seemed to really have an attitude, we weren't going to let that ruin our meal. We ordered meals similar to what we would normally order in a Mexican restaurant, to make a fair comparison. First off: once the waiter delivered our meals, we never saw him again. And we waited after finishing our meal...and waited...and waited. We finally had to go to the cashier and tell them what we had so we could pay for it and leave. As far as meats, I ordered chicken (which was actually pretty good), and my wife ordered beef. The presentation of the meals was very messy. But we didn't come there to "observe" our food. Okay...we ordered guacamole, and the taste was very disappointing. The taste of the chips was "flat"...nothing special. The dip served with the chips was somewhat tasteless and runny. Just ate here tonight with friends. My first time in this restaurant. I thought the salsa and chips were the best part of the meal. Good salsa with a little kick to it. I ordered the #7 combo, beef enchilada, chili relleno, with beans and rice. The rice was all dried out and the beans were tasteless. The beef enchilada was ok. The chili relleno was a complete disappointment. It was mushy and tasted like it had been frozen and made a week ago. I could taste the refridgeration!! The cheese on top wasn't even cooked. We just moved to Waukee and were looking for a local Mexican restaurant. We found a great one! The prices are great and the food is fantastic! Went on a Saturday and they have 2 very big screen older projection TVs. Both were showing college football which is great but both had the same game? Service was ok and the 12 oz margaritas for $2 seems like a good deal until you taste the blended mix with very little tequila (if any!). The chips and salsa were fine but when the watery beans came they nearly ran off the plate! Ok, so I went here with my mom and niece, who is 7. I ordered the enchiladas that come with 4 different ones (chicken, beef, cheese and bean). We ordered my niece a chicken quesadilla, which was mushy and she would not touch. So we ordered her chicken nuggets. These nuggets were obviously frozen and came out of a microwave. Not to mention, our food came to the table in record time, like it was already made and warming under a heat lamp!! I was instantly suspicious. Food was very bland and mushy. Service was just ok. Later that night I had the worst stomach cramps ever, and ended up spending most the night in the bathroom. Either on the toilet, or bent over it puking. Los Tres is hands down one of the best Mexican restaurants in the 515. In the past couple years the staff has greatly improved. Service is quick and food is made to order. They have a great happy hour and are willing to adjust any menu item on request, I know because of my low sodium restrictions. Unlike other places, the food doesn't come out in a plate of grease or cheese - and here's the salsa trick... ASK FOR THE FRESH, HOMEMADE SALSA made by Sergio. (He's our favorite server.) Alright. LTA is good for a few things. Thing is...you's gots to know what to get. So, having started rough, I think I now have a decent feel for how to work this joint. First: top shelf margarita with Centennario. Those cats pour HEAVY. For Mid-Western Mexican food, it was very good. Food was a little bland, but I am use to CA Mexican food. Would definitely recommend to any traveler through Iowa. Service was also very good. Restaurant as clean. read more

One of my favorite places in the Des Moines area. Try the Burrito Ranchero (either beef or chicken). Excellent salsa.

We ate here June 30, 2016. Had a party of 18. Thought we reserved the party room but must have miscommunicated. No big deal. They were able to accommodate us all. Everything was ok except it took an inordinate amount of time to get one of our meals. The rest of us had our food and were almost done eating by time the one meal came. Everything seemed ok until about 4am when the one who ate the late meal woke up with apparent food poisoning. Don't think I will be eating there again. read more

The food here is always great. The drinks are good and they always have great drink specials. However, the service is awful. I have yet to come here and get good service, and I come weekly. We tried this place once. The food was great. The service was okay, until we heard one of the guys in charge yelling at one of the women who was waitressing. It sounded like a very petty complaint on his part. He didn't even make an effort to take her to the kitchen; yelled at her just beyond dining room visibility. The place was rather expensive anyway. We actually like the food here and order it often but we have had 3 bad experiences when using Door Dash. I'd blame it on Door Dash but I found out that the order is going directly to Los Tres. We've had wrong entrees, missing entrees, tacos are never correct. Today, after another taco mess up and missing a complete entree, I called and was argued with about my order. The person was completely unwilling to fix it and argued with me on how many entrees I ordered. Then he blamed it all on Door Dash. Waukee is growing, more and more food options are coming, yet it's a community loyal to local businesses. If you want that loyalty to continue, I'd assume you'd want to keep your patrons. The food is just so-so which is frustrating because it's WAY over-priced. A plate of four small taquitos was $9 and that didn't include any sides. I thought rice and beans came with all dinners but I guess not?!? They charged me $1 extra to have sour cream which I thought was a standard topping on all Mexican food. A tiny cup of cheese dip was $3.50. To top it all off they charged me for my kids' drinks even though the menu stated that drinks were a part of the kids meal price. The food isn't even very good here so keep driving a few minutes down the road and you'll find a dozen other Mexican restaurants that have better food and better prices. read more

As stated in another review. Walking in here is like walking in any one of hundreds of Mex restaurants around the country, all with same look and feel and menu. Very few of these places are truly exceptional and this place is not one of them. Some days the food and service is pretty good and other days it's almost two stars; just VERY inconsistent. Went there on cinco de mayo (with a small party) and the service was horrible. It wasn't even that busy for a Mexican Holiday and it being a Saturday. Never had a designated waiter and whoever came to take care of us (after trying to get someone's attention to order drinks or food) would seem annoyed that they had to help us. Never brought menus to us or waters when we asked. Getting our bill was a fiasco too. The atmosphere was great which is why I would go back but thats it. Service, again, was terrible. read more

There was nothing wrong with Los Tres Amigos. They just didn't do anything to set themselves apart from the crowd. I could have had the exact same experience at any other the many Mexican restaurants in the Des Moines area. The service was great, we never had to wait for refills or more chips and salsa.
