Each year, we choose a different lake to stay on in central WI and we've all agreed that we need to make sure we stay close enough so we can schedule a float with Sandy Shores! This year, Mallory was the superstar who made sure we all had what we needed, including upgrading to a tube with back support (yes, please!), as well as our cooler float. She got us all loaded into the van and unloaded at the river, making sure we understood exactly where to find her for the pickup! Getting out was a breeze as well - just look for the orange markers, walk to the shore, pick up your tube and walk up to the van, where they'll take your tube from you, pack it up and load you into the van to return to your car. And a bonus - you leave your keys and ID with them when you float, so there's zero chance of losing your keys in the river! Sandy Shores is organized and streamlined to make the whole process very enjoyable - just log on to their site & reserve your time (highly recommend) and bring cash (for the float and to tip!!). The float itself takes about 2 hours, but there are a couple of sand bars that you can stop at to take a time out and chill, if you'd like. When we arrived to Sandy Shores we were quickly and rudely turned away by the cashier because we didn't have a reservation?? If this was a requirement then it needs to be said on the website that it is. Not that it's an option. We quickly found a different company to tube through down the road and had a much better experience right off the bat.

As we walked into a strange unmarked building to pay for our adventure, we met an inebriated man sitting at the bar. Moments later someone came in and screamed expletives and threats at him until he stumbled out of the establishment. Then, a very nice employee helped us get our tickets and apologized for the behavior. The trip: A fuzzy van screeches around the corner, its car batteries spilling out of the side, this is the vehicle that will take you to the river. Without any order, drunk people pile into the vehicle, sitting or standing wherever. You take a very bumpy and seemingly unsafe venture to the river where you unload tubes (and drag them for a few mins across a muddy stretch of land to the water). The river itself is pleasant. The bottom is sandy and there are a lot of shallow parts/sandbars. The trip takes about 3 hours if you can get ahead of the 100 drunk partiers in tubes, as well. When you get back, you climb onto an incredibly shady dock and.......that's it. Some people love it, I myself thought it sure was something.

After checking in with Julie and blowing up the tubes we were off to launch! 7 and a half hours later, tubing success. We walked and lazily floated down all the way to the Wildcat canoe launch where we were greeted by our driver who picked us up and helped load us up and get us back to our camping stay. We were all very thankful for our service which was truly on point. Titanic didn't skip a beat and they were so very helpful from start to finish. Couldn't ask for much more.

I heard they catch northerns too if that's your thing. I can't say enough about Heather who is running the place. She's an excellent communicator who really helped make my experience there wonderful.

So I pre-ordered a pizza (along with the gorilla for other guests). The day we arrived, told "no gluten free pizza was available" so we ordered hot dogs and fries...told as the pizza's were being served "oh, no fries as it is broken". So our daughter had 2 hot dogs while everyone else enjoyed pizza (was told we could not order in a gluten free option). We booked the party and were given 10 passes, we also had 5 coupons for free entry. We told the front desk to use the 10 birthday passes first, that way we could use the coupons at a later date. When we left, they had 5 passes left and no coupons...they gave those first and refused to change this. We spent well over $300 for this party. Not once did we get "How did we do?" to follow up. Very disappointed. Good place to go if you are just going swimming, do not book a party here.

When we walked into their beautiful cabin / office the potbelly stove was kicking out a little heat on that chilly morning and the panoramic view of the river through the wall-o-windows was fantastic. The woman who helped us was so friendly and gave us a thorough briefing to prepare us, including helpful details about what to expect from the river. The black-and-white map they provide is a little tough to read. Color would be better. I do like an aluminum canoe best (which is what BRR runs.) The PFDs they provide by default are the orange rectangle type II, but when I asked if they had a vest-type they accommodated. The basic orange are fine if you're leaving them in the boat, but really get in the way if you wear them while paddling. Because s#!t can go wrong fast on a river like the Wisconsin I prefer to wear the PFD most of the time. Our pickup was prompt and the van was clean and in nice shape. I've done many different stretches of the Wisconsin now and I do think the segment between BRR and Arena is the nicest I've done. It's more distant from roads, so without that truck noise it feels more remote. The shore and bluffs are pretty on this stretch too. It's a small and personal operation which is great when it's quiet. I could see them struggling to attend to everyone on busy weekend days, though. Our canoe had clearly see lots of trips - it showed evidence of many repairs and made me question its reliability a little bit. That said, it did not appear to leak at all, so... I do like like renting from a down-river outfitter so there's no need to get back for a specific shuttle time, so BRR has that going against it, but all-in-all this place will likely be my go-to for future trips.
