Radio station WNIU operated by Northern Illinois University is my all-time favorite classical radio…read morestation. They can be heard at 90.5 FM and online at WNIU.org. WNIU is unique in that they carry the "Classical 24" network from American Public Media 24 hours a day. Many NPR stations across the country use this program service for various day parts, but no other station that I am aware of carries it full time. On WNIU, there are no interruptions in the music format except for station IDs and short introductions to each selection. I find these very interesting and well worth listening to. They don't detract at all from the music, and I learn a great deal from them. The announcers are very knowledgeable about their material. The musical selections on WNIU range from familiar favorites to music you probably have never heard before. Everything is tastefully programmed. I can listen to this station for hours on end and never grow tired of it. Although I can't pick it up in my car because I live too far away, at home I have an outdoor antenna and I turn WNIU on from the moment I arrive until bedtime. Listening online is another option that I sometimes take advantage of when the signal isn't coming in very well (I live almost 60 miles from the station). Whether you are a lifelong fan of classical music as I am, or a casual listener, I believe you will love the music on this station. It is the only station I can have on while I am trying to concentrate. I find that the music enhances my creativity and allows me to solve complex problems without being distracted. If you become a fan of WNIU, I hope you will consider supporting them and help keep this great music on the air and available to everyone.
