This has to be one of my ALL TIME FAVORITE Vietnamese restaurants. It's a medium-sized, family -owned restaurant tucked in the back of a tiny business area on Old Newport Blvd. FAVORITE #1: CHICKEN PHO WITH CHICKEN BROTH Their chicken pho is exceptional. Not too many places offer chicken broth with their chicken pho, as it's usually beef broth (go figure). Once you have a sip, you can taste a potpourri of spices and flavors that blend so perfectly together. It's lip-smacking good with a cloying flavor that lingers on your lips for a while. Yup! It's that good. FAVORITE #2: SHRIMP VERMICELLI SALAD This is my summer go-to since it's a cold dish consisting of cold vermicelli rice noodles on top a bed of romaine lettuce, bean sprouts, carrots, Vietnamese basil, and onions, all topped with and their perfectly grilled shrimp. Soooo light, healthy and nom-noms. Accompanied by a side of fish sauce, of which I always get two. FAVORITE #3: CHICKEN CURRY Their chicken curry is another one of my favorites. It boasts huge chunks of potatoes, carrots and onions, accompanied by a side of jasmine rice. Love the location! This place is right off the busy Newport/55 blvd, but also next to a quiet Old Newport road. It is semi-hidden on the first floor of an odd-shaped office building, with a cute patio/open-air seating at the entrance. A surprising dinner in Newport. We came to newport for the weekend and was looking for a quick spot for dinner. Wanting something light, we came to this spot with relatively low expectations. The egg rolls were the first surprise. They came out piping hot, delicious, and crunchy. They were accompanied with some very fresh lettuce, mint, and pickled radish and carrot. What can I say that hasn't already been said about this soon to be classic Newport Beach Vietnamese restaurant? After coming here whenever I am in the area over the last 3 years I have yet to be disappointed by this family run restaurant. To describe Lotus Bistro as a Vietnamese restaurant less than 10 miles from the largest Vietnamese community outside of Vietnam serving authentic family Vietnamese dishes with American influences would limit such definition greatly. The dishes are made according to their ethnic origins, but things like chicken tend to be breast meat which to most chefs including myself is the most flavorless, dry part of the chicken instead of moist succulent and when seasoned properly, savory part of the chicken.... the thigh. But some FAD DIET sold Californians on how great chicken breast is and now for decades have been missing out not only some amazing meals, but the true ethnic culinary adventure places like Lotus Bistro could offer. Vietnamese cuisine prepared traditionally is some of the freshest, healthiest cuisine on Earth....and how many fat Vietnamese do you know? ! Yes, I already know the answer. Back to the bistro... Tucked in off the Old Newport Blvd heading off from PCH or Lido Island it is an unassuming building with a comfortable, casual interior with a the family and staff serving you directly always ready to please. And please they do! From the owner to the busboy your water glass never runs dry. The food is served freshly made, the rice is perfectly cooked to accompany their dishes. Today I kept a simple fare of the Lotus Bistro Grilled Pork fresh spring rolls with a hoisin and peanut sauce and one of their signature dishes, Shakin Beef. Whoever prepared the spring rolls did so with the speed of a savant just eagerly waiting for my order. The soft moist tightly wrapped rice paper around the lettuce, ciltantro, bean sprouts and thinly sliced slightly crispy grilled pork offered a wonderful myriad of textures as your teeth break through the stretchy rice paper only to be met by the crunchy slicing through of the sprouts, lettuce and cilantro only to finish through the crisp grilled pork slices before your teeth met. I added a little Sriracha sauce to my peanut hoisin sauce just for added kick. Nice Then the Sizzling plate of Lotus Bistro Shakin Beef made with cubes of tender juicy filet mignon perfectly cooked to a medium rare to medium if you let it continue cooking on the hot plate, accompanied by freshly diced onion and sweet red bell pepper that sat in its own juices making its natural gravy. Which is one of the displays of the chefs skill and culinary understanding of beef most likely influenced by the French-Vietnamese inspired cooking methods that separates Vietnamese cuisine from other Asian cuisines. The wonderful brown beef gravy was perfect for dipping a fresh French baguette into or as is done by the Vietnamese, putting their white rice into the gravy and using a spoon to sop up that wonderful liquor of red meat in between mouthfuls of filet mignon, bell pepper and onions. The quality and freshness of the ingredients cooked just right made this a most enjoyable meal....all just under $20! $19.87 to be exact. This is probably my new favorite Vietnamese place. I have had this place bookmarked for ages and I finally got a chance to check it out this past weekend with a couple of friends and it was so amazing! Firstly, the manager here was extremely friendly he came up to us at the end of our meal and engaged in conversation with us and made sure everything went well. Superb service. One point of criticism regarding service - our waiter seemed very short with us and we asked him about different menu items and he was one wordy and didn't care too much about giving good responses. For example, we asked him about the mango chicken salad and how it was and he said in the most monotone voice: "it has mango." Lol a little more care would have made the experience better. The food here is next level. The pho broth is perfectly seasoned and has deep rich flavors. (5/5) The mango chicken salad was fresh, vibrant, and packed with amazing sweet/sour and a hint of minty flavor. (5/5) The banh mi was delicious - the pork banh mi is the star here, beef doesn't compare - the pork banh mi had a nice Smokey meat flavor, complimented with vibrant pickled carrots and radishes/cilantro. (4/5) We got this cilantro rice with braised chicken on top. Did someone say Umami?! just made myself cringe a little lol. But seriously, that chicken was so frikkin delicious. It had a sweet/Smokey wok flavor which is really the definition of umami. (5/5) The shrimp spring rolls were also delicious but weren't unique in any way. The sauce was good! (3/5). At the end of our meal the nice manager gave us some coconut wafers and they were bomb.com. Overall, we will be back and bring more people. Reading all these reviews got me feeling like I went to the wrong place. Don't get me wrong, the food is not bad, and the noodles are cooked better than other pho places I've been to. But 4.5 stars? I'm so confused. Let's start off with the egg rolls. These are fantastic. 100% recommend these. The pho? It's alright. The soup tastes like it was made using bouillon cube instead of the traditional simmering method. And the small is smaller than most other pho places I've been to. Lastly, the price? Very Newport-ish prices, which I understand, but I mean, it's pho. Paying $9 for pho is on the high end of the spectrum for food quality that isn't superior. As of writing this, the menu prices listed on Yelp are inaccurate. Oh, second lastly, I did not find the service extraordinary by any means. We walked in; they told us to sit anywhere; they took our order; they brought out food; they brought our check... Not sure when the "good" service comes in. My daughters and I decided to try this restaurant. We had a craving for Pho. I have been wanting to try this place for a while since it is less than a mile from my house. It's family owned and they were very welcoming the minute we walked in. To start we ordered the egg rolls. It came with four. Perfect for our group. I ordered a large meat ball Pho, one daughter had the flank steak Pho and the other had the shrimp Pho. The broth was amazing! You can taste the love in it. They placed the side of bean sprouts, jalapeños, lime etc on a plate to share so we could add to our soup. One daughter finished her soup. I took mine home because my eyes were bigger than my stomach but I can't wait to have the rest later today. The service was great. There are more items on the menu I look forward to trying. We found out about this place from a friend (a huge foodie like me). The restaurant itself is pretty nicely tucked in a corner, so you might have a little difficulty finding it (esp. if you are directionally challenged like me). Since it was a rainy day and slightly cold, we figured what we needed was a good bowl of Phó. Since our friend had recommended it, we ended up going to this place. As soon as I waked in the first thing I noticed was the quaint decor. The place has a casual feel to it, just like any other Vietnamese restaurant I've been to. We ordered the Grilled Pork Rolls and the Special combination Phó. I have been to a few Vietnamese places but I've never had a pork spring roll like that before. The meat was tender and soft and well complemented the assortment of veggies. Only time I wish they came in rolls of four instead of two. The Pho was very well done and a just the right amount of noodle and soup. The soup itself was pretty good and so was the flanks, meatballs and briskets. The staff is pretty good, esp. the owner who was nice enlightening to talk to us for a couple of minutes telling us that we had just missed the rush hour. We were driving by on Newport Boulevard a d just happened to be looking for Vietnamese food when we saw this place. A couple quick turns and we were in the parking lot. Walked inside and found the place had a pretty cool atmosphere slightly low lit. We were greeted at the door and sat immediately and noticed it looks like this place is a family run restaurant. The lady that served us was nice and attentive. We ordered shrimp Pho with vegetarian broth and shrimp spring rolls (The large was about $14 and the rolls were about $7.50). We eat Pho all the time in Little Saigon Westminster and I must say this place was legit in comparison, although definitely higher prices which is to be expected with the location. The soup came out piping hot and it was very fresh as well as the spring rolls and the peanut sauce with the rolls was great. If you're passing by, I would give it a shot. Got an order for pickup and with EAT24 Yelp app, it was a reasonable price and got a little discount. The banh mi sandwiches were great because I just cut them all up before unwrapping them, and it served as a bunch of cute small sliders that we could mix and match for a group dinner. The two employees inside acted like their restaurant was so incredible that it was SO WEIRD that I hadn't heard about it before. Like I was out of the loop on some huge phenomenon. LOL. I don't like experiencing food regret. Based on the yelp reviews, my family and I decided to check out this restaurant, and as Scottie P. says in We're The Millers, I have "No Ragrets." Great: prices, food, selection, and quick service. After the meal, they presented my 3-year-old with hair accessory choices, of which she selected a purple headband with pearls. It was very sweet. We ordered 2 different kinds of pho (and by the way, the large size is a $1 more and is really large), grilled pork bun/noodles with an egg roll, spring roll, dumplings, and a fresh coconut. For the meat dishes, they're really generous with the meat in comparison to other Vietnamese restaurants. We'd all order the same things again, but maybe not large sizes. But then again for an extra $1 each, okay, large. And lots of parking, too (well, at least on a Sunday at noon). read more
