Sound was good (as it was a folky show), but the text on SOH's site billed the concert as performing songs his dad did with Jerry Garcia. There were only 1 or 2 songs. Disappointing. Next went to Los Lobos. While it seems the band played well, the sound was pretty bad. The mix was bad, such as a couple of the guitars were largely inaudible as the whole sound was muddy. The vocals were often times too low in the mix. I don't know if the equipment for a louder RNR show was not up to the task, or the person on the soundboard just did a plain bad job.

We had gone to one of these concerts at least 15-20 years ago when visiting family. It was a perfect summer evening for such a gathering. If you are here as a serious fan of the symphony this may not be the best place to listen to a concert but if your goal is to have a picnic it a great setting then do go. Yes you could hear the music and see it if you were not close (many were pretty far away but there were three large video screens). That did not seem to matter given the music was just an excuse to picnic on the Capitol lawn. Between the eating, drinking, kids screaming and laughing, the chatting there was a concert going on. You do need to arrive early to stake out a good spot and there are rules on the height of chairs if you are on the lawn. Parking can also be an issue but it is all worth it when the weather cooperates. A true must-do in Madison.

Food vendors galore are present to satisfy all of your needs, or you are welcome to pack a picnic and wine! We brought a blanket and were able to find a spot for two despite the large crowd. My work sponsored an event that allowed us two free pizzas from Pizza Brutta, but we did see that they also had a stand nearby. If sitting on the lawn is not your jam, there are several restaurants near by with outdoor patios that would still allow for good food and music from the orchestra. Tip: the concert closest to the Fourth of July is my favorite, and they include a salute to the armed forces and end with the 1812 overture!

Caught "Little Shop of Horrors" at Verona High School last night, and was very happy we did!!…read more Initially I was reluctant to attend because I did not have good memories of the movie made years ago. But, I LOVED this live version! Great singing and acting, plus lots of toe tapping and laughing made for a A+ night out. My favorite Singers were the Audreys: Audrey (1) and Audrey 2. They were so different, yet both so incredibly talented! The entire cast, orchestra and production staff did an exception job! Special kudos to the puppeteer that made Audrey 2 really come alive. She really got a workout. It may not be great for small children as there is little profanity and finger jestures. Adults will definitely enjoy this musical!
