The idea was to obviously expand the Parkfield with something the same but not quite. Just like the Parkfield, Rhubarb is a traditional British pub, decked in a dark wood interior and keeping it simple behind the bar. However after a falling out with the owners of the Parkfield site, he simply moved himself and his staff and most of his punters next door with him. The competition is only a good thing for the Lane as for too long I have bemoaned the lack of pubs along Lark Lane as it has favoured wine bars or tapas restaurants. Rhubarb is only small but that only adds to a friendly atmosphere amongst a customer base who all seem to know each other and whose conversations bounce around the place making you feel very welcome. And with plenty of screens around you can always get a good view of any sport on show - of course 9 times out of ten that might be horse racing.

Obviously for a British pub that ultimately means nothing, but the fact natural light made it six inches into the place before giving up the ghost made me want to reverse. Rhubarb is more suited to the night, when the surrounding Mediterranean eateries are too packed with people having dinner to enjoy as places to drink. Oh, and that's not just some weird Spaniard muttering things to you in the gents. It's a language tape. I repeatedly forget this.

But the attraction here is that it sells beer from all around the world. German, Belgian, Japanese, American... everything you can think of! They sell Weihenstephaner Weissbier which is one of the tastiest drinks on the face of the Earth. I can't recommend German Weissbiers enough. The prices aren't that cheap but they are perfectly reasonable, considering the drinks of offer. They are more than worth the money, that's for sure! This place is head and shoulders above any normal 'pub'. Bier also offers pies, nachos and hotdogs if you're feeling a little peckish. There are lots of TVs to show sport on. Sometimes I'll steer clear of the place when it's like this, I'll admit. This is because I'm not really into sport and, as you can probably imagine, it gets extremely packed at these times. If you're into your football though, then this place would definitely have yet more to offer you. Even though that sounds like a negative point from me, the good part of Bier more than make up for it. It's such a great place to relax and try fantastic beers from all around the world. This is an essential place to go.

It also stopped a wedding party getting in, 2 senior citizens and 2 lads who must have been 40. But they did let in a lady who was so so very drunk she needed help up the steps, was pole dancing on a pillar and generslly falling over. But she did have photo ID so it's clearly fine. Afterasll, Policy is Policy! The decor inside is fine. The outside courtyard area curiously reminds me of a village train station platform.

I don't tend to go to The Albert that much, even when there have been very few decent pub options on the Lane, it hasn't really been on the radar. There isn't much of an atmosphere here, I think that has generally got something to do with its layout of high ceiling rooms, everything feels cut off as if there is something better going on around the corner - but there never is. Creating scenarios of constantly letting your punters down will count against you in my opinion. However it does have a large beer garden, which in a leafy area like Lark Lane should be a must for more venues. The food is really not the best, standard pub food isn't really an excuse in this day and age, just stick with a pack of nuts till you venture elsewhere, God knows there are enough eateries nearby.

This is the kind of place that feels like it was the haunt of some esoteric group of geniuses in the mist-shrouded past, although reality soon gets the better of you and you realise it's always had the same rambling sort of regulars. Opening 9am til 11pm seven days a week, Milo is probably the hardest working venue on Lark Lane too. I can't think of another business in this area that serves breakfast through to late night cocktails - if you wanted to you could probably live here! The menu is a eclectic mix of posh American diner-esque fare like 'triple stacked' buttermilk pancakes for breakfast and the frankly outrageously good Hero hamburger and a sort of Mediterranean (ever had a 'Spanish Butty' for breakfast - you should try it!) and British gastro pub fusion (the posh fish finger sandwich and Winter vegetable risotto are other favourites of mine). As for the desserts...approach with caution. They are not for the faint hearted. You'll feel like you need a bit of a lie down after the sticky toffee pudding. The wine choice is pretty good and there is an interesting mix of beers, both bottled and on draught. There is also a refreshingly concise list of classic cocktails (some with a twist) and an impressive and classy collection of whiskeys and gins. The Loungers interior style fits in perfectly to the Lark lane vibe with its flock wallpaper, retro photos and prints and shabby chic furniture. Only a few weeks after it first opened it already felt like this place had been here for years. A mention must also be made of the always friendly and helpful staff who help to make a visit to Milo a very pleasant experience all round. Highly recommended.

This is a traditional pub in the fullest sense and a good idea of this can be seen from its jukebox - anyone under the age of 30 will be hard pushed to get your money's worth of tunes from a quid! However with two floors, the Parkfield has handily served both Liverpool and Everton fans on matchdays which ensures a lively saturday/sunday afternoon and now that Rhubarb has opened next door it seems decent pubs are returning to the Lane once again.

However, this is not reflected in the rest of the building, which has luxurious fittings and woodwork. The lunch time menu here is pretty decent and very reasonably priced, and as Lark Lane tends to be quieter in the daytime its the time I'd recommend going. The evening menu is your usual variety of pizza, pasta and meat, and all the mains are less than £20, so it's still reasonable. I know a few people have said that Maranto's isn't what it used to be, but then Lark Lane isn't what it used to be either. Attracting a different crowd these days, the businesses have no doubt had to change to keep up, and maybe that is why regulars at Maranto's feel as though standards have slightly slipped. Still, it is a beautiful building and still draws in many regulars and first-timers each week.

Seemingly propped up on one side by an outcrop of rock and with a doorway populated by glaring smokers, it resembled somewhere that would result in my gruesome death if I supported the wrong team or hated places rhyming with geranium. You can tell I was wrong. It got five stars for one thing. Inside, the Herculaneum Bridge was surprisingly well decorated, with a wide, acorn-coloured bar that had model ships and steamrollers dotted above it. The barman was the epitome of Liverpudlian hospitality- mockingly jokey and the quiz machine paid out like a dodgy cash machine. Then when I thought it couldn't get better, the barman shouted us to show he'd poured us three pints 'on the house'. It shows how plagued by cynicism I am that I was unnerved by getting free drinks off the staff. Things like that don't happen, ever. The only downside with this pub is that it's miles from anywhere and I imagine would be difficult for tourists to find if they were using it as a hotel. However, if that means it remains my hidden secret then I hope it stays lost forever in the centre of nowhere. It's mine, my own, my precious.
