Walker Gas
After discovering that the toilet's carpet was soaking wet due to a pipe leak on a Sunday evening…read more(always the weekend) I called my Nationwide insurance emergency line on Monday morning who passed my details to my local contractor, Walker Gas from Dalkeith. Plumber Greg paid us a visit on Monday morning to assess the damage; he took a set of pictures of the ballcock, toilet cistern and pipes, all in all a 30 minutes visit. On Friday, as advised by courteous Emma, from Walker, plumber Stevie, popped here and in exactly one hour he changed and fix the Fluidmaster Push Button Cable Dual-Flush Valve, float valve and the push button itself. He also fixed the cistern to the wall with 4 screws and tassels as the original ones were "missing in action". On both cases, Greg & Stevie phoned me in advance to let me know about their estimated time of arrival so no surprises on that front. The Walker Gas contractors did a great job by fixing and replacing old with new, so kudos to them. Recommended.

I'm in the process of…read moreplanning out a house and love the idea of getting a salvaged fireplace (you know, the really cool kind with the tiles down the sides?), as well as old door knobs, doors, and other features. Holyrood Architectural Salvage is a huge old warehouse FULL of great old pieces. The bottom floor is stuff which has been re-finished to a high standard, and upstairs is full of items which are in need of some seriously TLC. My understanding is that you can choose an item from upstairs and then pay this place to spiff it up, deliver it, install it, the whole shebang. Or, you can just buy the piece as is and take it home with you, if you're up to doing the work yourself. I've not yet had a chance to buy anything from here but I really really hope to and I'll report back as to the level of service and quality when I do.

We just moved and this was our house warming gift to each other. We met the manager who asked us a load of questions about our house and room then pointed us in the direction of the many Victorian fireplaces they have. We were considering a stove but after seeing the lovely inserts decided to have one of them. We bought a nice marble mantel, insert and a gas fire and Alan said he could fit them all. His guys came to sweep and test our chimney to ensure our chimney didn't need lined which it didn't and then he arranged the fitters to come several weeks later. Our hearth was made to measure and it was a couple of weeks for it to arrive. The Holyrood fitters brought everything we had purchased and fitted it perfectly. We were a bit daunted with all the initial questions but never thought there was so much involved in fitting a fire. Alan looked after us so well and the fitters did a great job! All in all, it was another good experience and we look forward to dealing with them again. They do what they say they will do which is nice in this day and age. Initial estimated price was not increased which is unusual! Five stars from us! Need some doors so no doubt be back soon.

They didn't turn-up and only phoned me at 5pm to say they were't coming, after I'd taken a half day from work. Then they arranged a weekend visit instead and didn't turn-up for that either, so I waited in all day for nothing. I understand that jobs over-run sometimes, but the lack of communication was really poor and two missed visits doesn't inspire confidence. Edit: Marie did phone me at 4pm on Saturday and assured me an engineer would visit next Saturday at 9am without fail. Edit 28/11: It's 9.30am Saturday and the engineer isn't here. If I had a complaining customer and I'd promised that an engineer would attend by a certain time, I'd ensure they were on time. Late and no call. Very, very poor.

I have to compliment them on the excellent manner in which they went about the work. They were all very courteous, helpful, pleasant and went out of their way to explain the operation of the new system in simple terms. The installation looks very good and they did a first-rate job of cleaning up all of the work areas. The whole exercise from first enquiry (less than 2 weeks ago) to final completion has been carried out in a most professional manner and I would be more than happy to recommend this excellent firm to any other person looking for a new boiler installation. Had to review this company as we just had a washing machine fitted by them today…read more Originally, the machine was due to be fitted on Thursday but due to a mix up by our landlord, the wrong machine was ordered. The fitter apologised (even though the mistake wasn't his) and offered to fit it on Saturday (his day off) as they were fully booked for Friday and he lived locally. He did a very neat job of removing the old machine, spilling hardly any water and cleaning up the little there was. As the new machine was a different model, the integrated door front had to be adjusted...he took the time to clean up the sawdust from drilling the new holes for the hinges! The new machine is now fitted, more neatly and perfectly level (unlike the original machine). All the packaging was taken away (in his van, rather than filling up our bin) which was a very nice touch. Before leaving he took the time to explain the controls and settings, again a nice helpful touch rather than just saying "there's the instruction manual". Overall, I was VERY impressed with the level of customer service and efficiency of the engineer.

Then, I noticed the huge signs for "Cotterell Lighting" and I decided to pop in. I was still really confused and wondered if I was entering some kind of bizarre lighting cult. As soon as I entered I realised that it was indeed a shop, and it sold lighting, all kinds of lighting, in every design you could think of. There were two friendly staff members working who just told me to give them a shout if I needed any help so I decided to browse. I couldn't believe how many different lighting styles they had and if you're looking for a new lampshade or light then you will find exactly what you're looking for here. In addition to lighting they also do a small amount of furniture. I noticed a really cool mirror ball light, a lampshade on a stand that was designed to look like a fish bone and a huge mirror that I like instantly as it made me look better than I actually do. I have to admit, it was a little odd walking around an old church and it was pretty much intact apart from the missing pews. When I looked up I could see that the upper seating of the church was still there and if that area was still accessible you could have taken a seat and looked down at the now lighting shop. The creaking floor boards were still there as were the stained glass window and painted high ceiling. It seems a waste that such a beautiful church is now just a shop and even stranger that it hasn't been disguised as a shop. I'd recommend visiting under the guise that you need a new lightbulb, as it really is an experience.

After talking with Ally and agreeing a quote for a job, explaining dimensions, kg, width of our doors, that I need to have it rearranged to be delivered, that it comes delivered by AO, that when I will arrange it I will get a text in the morning of the delivery with a 4hrs time slot and then I will let him know when will the fridge be in. After confirming he is up for the job I have arranged next day delivery. I informed him and repeated that I will not know the time slot until the morning and then I will let him know. He replied: 'Ok I have lots of other jobs too So you know to tell them to leave it outside until we arrive I am going to juggle jobs around just for you But we are expert and can keep everyone happy'. Quite happy by that point, I can obviously understand they have other jobs so I can have the fridge waiting on the ground floor until they have a gap to come and lift it up the stair. The next day in the morning I had AO calling and confirming that the fridge will be delivered between 4pm and 7pm, so I rushed to inform Ally so he knows when to come around and knows what time it will be in etc. Suddenly, I get phone from him and he start to talk to me that it will cost him money, that he told me that whats the delivery drivers are like. (I specified clearly that I will get 4hrs window) He continued that he need to pay wages, that its after 5:30 pm so he has man who are paid 10 12 per/h and that it may cost more. I responded that he gave me a quote (he never mentioned that the cost may change depending on the time of the day) and that's not right to suddenly tell me it will depend how much it will cost. He started getting very rude and abrasive, while I talked he even said 'let me finish' in very rude tone of voice. I pointed this is not very professional as a business owner to act like that and he got to the stage of shouting, rising his voice to me etc. Long story short I ended the call politely and absolutely upset and shocked with the way I was talk to started looking for someone else. Found another contractor in 2hrs, after confirming the job etc I was writing txt to let Ally know. He called me before I send it to him (from different number so clearly thinking I may not pick up) I said I don't need his service anymore, he was trying to be falsely polite saying that he's happy for me. When I also said 'I don't appreciate the way you spoke to me today and find it very unprofessional' he again started shouting, I disconnected immediately, with me and my fiance hearing him shouting 'I don't care what you think!' We couldn't believe how someone can think they can run business like that, shocking. Advice: Get someone else! There is plenty of professional people out there who will stick to their word and a plus they will not abuse you! Save yourself some stress and time. To top that, straight after I have posted this review on his fb page he called me on my mobile! - blocked
