I'm not one to post negative reviews, I'd speak to someone first. I got the worst haircut I've ever had. I'm retired, on a strict budget and I have to save for haircuts, it was a big deal to me. Tony has so many great reviews that I felt I was in good hands. He seemed like a nice guy, we talked about the cut. He basically did ever that I DIDN'T want. That would not be a big deal, sometimes it takes a cut or two to get it right IF THE QUALITY WAS THERE. It's a choppy mess. The fade I didn't want is choppy and uneven. I lost months of growth that I was specific about leaving as much as possible. , but I did say that if he needs to go shorter to connect everything that's ok - assuming he knew what he was doing. I felt ok after he was finished, I knew it wasn't great but when I got home ... yikes. It's like a joke it's so bad. In hindsight they were polite but I did not feel "welcome" ... I was hoping to find a regular barber. They are close and reasonably priced but obviously not a good fit. read more

I don't often post five stars but when I do it's because of extraordinary service coupled with high quality. I've had Eric cut my hair for over 5 years I needs always done an outstanding job. it's a very pleasant place and even with the covid-19 issues that we all face they've taken a very proactive stance on safety and make sure everyone's masked up social distancing is enforced and they don't allow people to wait or extraneous people to be in the barbershop. I think there's a real sensitivity to safety and at the same time providing a quality experience and meeting the needs of the customer. read more

Nothing like a place where you feel like everyone knows everyone's name and they are always glad you came! Seriously every person who walked through the doors of Loyal Sons yesterday were greeted with a huge smile and a big thanks for coming in! I did not have an appointment with anyone but Derek 1 of the 5 barbers working, fit me in as a walk in! I didn't have to wait long and heck they had FREE Beer for adults, and Root Beer and Water for the non drinkers! So I had fun sipping a brew, listening to all the shop talk while I waited for my cut! The space is really rad. And has a cool mix of retro barbershop vibe, with modern flair! The chairs must be from the 50's or 60's but they have been refurbished and seem all shiny and new! Agnes the shop bull dog kept the kids all smiling too! I have run by this building so many times when it was a stain glass shop, so I thought it was really cool that they kept a bit of the building's history. The super unique doors to the shop's break room are a really cool stained glass! The barbers are all pro and I love the hot shaving cream shave of the neck! Bring cash for the cut and make sure you tip, it's worth it! I love my new cut and I love coming to a place that feel like it has a community of it's own, so welcoming and fun! I just received my first haircut from Hutch at the new barbershop. I have been having Hutch cut my hair for a couple of years now. He always does a great job. He takes the time and care to get it right every time. The Loyal Sons barbershop is committed to keeping the spirit of old school traditional barbering alive in Des Moines. They honor the old craft by practicing their art every day. Sometimes the newest thing isn't the best thing. Our fathers and grandfathers had quite a few things right. Their brand new shop is sparkling clean and fresh, but with the vibe of a long established location. I especially enjoy the tile mosaic in the entryway that transports you to an old should barbershop today. The barbers here all seem friendly and professional. I'm African American with pretty curly hair and I hadn't seen my personal barber for over 1.5 months due to traveling. I had the pleasure of being cut up by Tony at the end of the day (5:30) and he did a magnificent job. I'm pretty particular and he absolutely nailed my taper fade and line up, and it takes skill to do so on your initial appointment. Unfortunately I'm only in Des Moines for a month but he would definitely be my new regular barber if I lived here. I had been going to Loyal Sons for around three years and Eric has done a very good job with my hair. I though his cuts were very pricy. I went to book a haircut in March of 2023 and I saw that I had been blocked. I though it was a glitch in Eric's booking tool so I went to the shop to see about booking in person. (There is no phone number on the website). He was busy and he called me back later in the day to tell me that I was not welcome in his shop anymore. I was speechless and he had accused me of staring at another barber & it made her fee uncomfortable. I had no reason to stare at anyone. Mind you, there are dozens of refrigerator magnets above their heads on the pipe to "stare" at. I thought the accusation was bizarre and petty. They give good haircuts but if you don't fit into the "hipster" culture there, I would go somewhere else. read more

Loyal Sons is exactly what a barbershop should be. The place is classically styled with subway tile and minimalist design, while including eclectic decorations and accents. A blending of old and new. It's clean and inviting. All of the barbers are friendly and there is no shortage of talent. I've been getting my haircut by Hutch ever since he got out of barber school and I've never been disappointed. He cut my hair when I was wearing a high skin fade and he blended it superbly. I've got longer hair now with as many cowlicks as Loyal Son's has barbers and Hutch makes it look easy. My hair is easily maintained with minimal product. Every time I leave the place I leave happy. Plus Hutch is a kind, genuine person. They kind of guy you want to see succeed -and he is. My recommendation; treat yourself to a hot shave. You won't be disappointed. read more

Finally found a great barbershop that allows you to schedule a time to come in! After trying several times to go to a walk-in only shop -- that always had a two hour wait, I'm glad to see there's a shop of talented people that can do a solid fade and beard work. I saw Travis and he was great! Showed him a picture of what I was wanting to do and he nailed it. Super cool atmosphere. This place came highly recommended however my experience turned out to be a nightmare in my opinion. The owner is rude, mean, argumentative narcissist in my opinion, and cares more about being right than treating customers well. Any skills for cutting hair are week outweighed by being mean in my opinion. read more

I was so sick of taking my son to Super Cuts where although the price was right, the haircut always looked ridiculous. I decided to support a local business and pay a little extra to have a quality haircut. Although his haircut was, in fact quality, and the person who cut his hair was sweet and clearly good with kids, I will not be back nor would I recommend this place to any friends with small kids. There is a large, friendly bulldog who roams around. I politely asked permission for my kids to pet the dog. The dog/shop owner said yes of course. My two year old daughter was down on her haunches and the dog licked her in the face and she squeeled - loudly - with delight. This prompted a loud "WOAH" from the owner and a dirty look to me. He then scolded them for sitting on the floor. But the dog is squat and they are kids and that's how kids pet dogs. If you are not into having kids in your shop you should not offer haircuts for them. read more

Let's see, after struggling to get two preteen girls ready, the hour drive to the shop, and the terrible traffic close to the shop, we were met by a condescending barber who was absolutely uninterested in us du to being 15 minutes late. I get it, we were late. My fault. However, at no point did I need a smug look and a condescending tone shot at me for that reason. You see, I was given this gran review from a friend that thought they would be able to help my daughter with her appearance issues due to recently starting to recover from alopecia. I asked around and a few of my friends that also go there had nothing bad to say, so I packed up my girls and made the hour trip... then the hour back which we were able to get an appointment on the way back for a barber in our town who actually did a phenomenal job (plus received the ridiculous tip I had planned for the barber). Personally I can't review the work they do, and I never will be able to. I won't recommend this place to anyone and, I will gladly let them know of the experience I had here. read more
