A Tribute to Doctor Lucia Zamorano Neurosurgeon Birmingham Michigan and the Detroit Medical Center…read more My mother is 95 years of age and lives on her own in Ontario Canada. At the beginning of 2014 she began to complain of numbness in her legs when she walked and this quickly advanced to acute pain over the next several months making it painful to walk more than a few steps. A CT Scan which we were able to arrange within a week in Michigan, revealed disc bulges at multiple levels impinging on the nerves causing the pain and inability to walk. The recommended course of action was to try the least invasive approach first that being cortisone shots with fluoroscopy into the afflicted area. We were able to do this within two months thanks to the cooperation of all the good people at the Pain Management Center of Mercy Hospital in Port Huron MI. Unfortunately it was not successful and the time came to identify a neurosurgeon that could and would perform a discectomy on a 95 year old patient. You might wonder why with her having medical coverage in Ontario my mother did not have all of the above procedures performed there at no cost. First despite what anyone says patient care is rationed in Ontario. The government has decided to spend a certain amount of GDP on health care and that's it. The rationing is achieved by "setting priorities" as to who will secure the services first and if you happen to be 95 years old the odds of your rising to the top of the list before you die are remote to none. On a macro basis there is perhaps some logic to the approach but when it's your family, not so much. Unfortunately this is what we have to look forward to in the US under Obamacare. The good news is that there is still Switzerland, Singapore and a number of other good medical centers where you avail yourself of medical care as long as you are willing to pay for it. But I digress as the primary purpose of my writing this is to extoll the virtues of a wonderfully skilled and dedicated neurosurgeon, Doctor Lucia Zamorano of Birmingham Michigan. When you are a doctor and have a 95 year old person with a pacemaker approach you to perform a five hour operation, you have to stop and consider what are the upsides to taking this on compared to the potential risks to reputation and given the litigious nature of our society, risks of a lawsuit in the event something goes wrong. Our torte law needs reform so that we no longer put our doctors in this ethical dilemma. After reviewing the CT scan and having a consulting visit with my mother, Doctor Zamorano did not hesitate to say she thought she could help and would be willing to perform the operation. I must first commend Doctor Zamorano for her compassion. As of this writing it is now three weeks since my mother's five hour operation at the Detroit Medical Center Harper University Hospital where she stayed an outpatient overnight. She is now able to walk pain free about a quarter of a mile using a mobile walker as a security blanket. Prior to the onset of pain at the beginning of the year she had been going to the gym doing a half hour on the bicycle and a half hour with free weights, leg presses etc. Our goal, thanks to the wonderful work of Doctor Zamorano is to get her back in the gym by September. Beyond that however Doctor Zamorano has given her back her mobility, her life and the ability to live in her own home. Doctor Zamorano I salute you as being a compassionate, caring and skilled doctor who I would recommend highly to anyone needing the services of a skilled neurosurgeon. I would also like to thank the wonderful people at DMC both the Administrative staff of the International Division who were very well organized, caring and minimized the bureaucratic process as well as the Anesthesiologist Team who were exceedingly attentive and again willing to take on the risks of dealing with a 95 year old patient. I would encourage any Canadian in need of medical care before they expire or endure untold pain for a long period to contact the International Division of the Detroit Medical Center. Hearing that, from your doctor that you've seen over and over again and after doing physical therapy, can leave you with a bad feeling in the pit of your stomach. But after going here I realize that all that anxiety was wasted and I'm so glad that my doctor referred me to this specialist. I was scheduled for an EMG test which is basically a nerve test. It shows if you have misfiring in your nerves because of a pinched nerve and other things. This office does do other neurological tests from what I understand, but this is what I went in for. Now this test I knew nothing about until my doctor's office told me (when they gave me the referral). They told me there were needles and electricity involved and I really got freaked out. Then when I called and I made my appointment they were so kind, and said anything you may have heard about this test most of that doesn't happen here. They explained the procedure but I still googled it. That was a bad mistake. Do yourself a favor ask your doctor questions and don't ever look anything up. People post the worst stories and yes, they might have had a bad experience, but everything that I did read online about this procedure was kind of outdated. The needles that were used for my procedure were almost like an acupuncture pin. If you look it up online and there are long probes that are as thick as a safety pin and as long as your middle finger. That's why I had anxiety all day When I came in and I met Dr. Brennan he knew almost immediately what my issue was just by touching my thumb. That's what a sharp mind and 30 years of experience will do for you. Everything I told him he said was completely textbook and I was so easy and he made me feel so much better. To have an accurate diagnosis that now and MRI will confirm exactly how to treat I know that I will be better sooner than later. I'm going to keep Dr. Brennan in mind if I need to go back for any more physical therapy or any more tests and I will specifically ask for him if the occasion comes up. Hopefully I'll never have to go back or not until much much later in life.... but now that I know that all of us who do any bending twisting and lifting can have these problems, there is a solution and you will feel better.
